23:20 - Amy Reisenbach Promoted to Head of Current Programs for CBS

AMY REISENBACH NAMED HEAD OF CURRENT PROGRAMS FOR CBS ENTERTAINMENT AND CBS TELEVISION STUDIOS

Amy Reisenbach has been promoted to Executive Vice President, Current Programs, CBS, overseeing the combined department that supports current programming for both CBS Entertainment and CBS Television Studios.

In her new position, Reisenbach will oversee creative affairs for all scripted series broadcast on CBS, and for Studio shows produced for other networks and streaming services. She will report to David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios, and Thom Sherman, Senior Executive Vice President, Programming, CBS Entertainment.

“I’ve known Amy since my days at Warner Bros. and have watched her grow into an outstanding executive at CBS with strong writer/producer relationships that help facilitate our creative process in such positive ways,” said Stapf. “Her father, Sandy, was a terrific and unparalleled executive in the business, and she has achieved her success in similar fashion – with integrity, hard work, creativity and a spirit of collaboration. I have complete trust in Amy’s programming instincts and confidence that she will lead our Current department with distinction.”

“Having watched Amy cover The CW’s series, I have always been impressed with her programming acumen, clear point of view and her deft and fearless support of the creative process,” said Sherman. “She is a smart, respected current executive whose input and leadership will be an important component in the success of our shows.”

Reisenbach had been Senior Vice President, Current Programs, since September 2015, supervising all series produced by the Studio for The CW, while continuing to work on several shows broadcast on CBS. She joined CBS Television Studios in 2005 as Manager, Current Programs, was promoted to director a year later and named Vice President in 2011.

Previously, she worked at Warner Bros. Television in the drama development and current departments. She is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Arts in Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Reisenbach succeeds Bridget Wiley, who announced plans to leave the network last week.

23:20 - Al Pacino to Star as Penn State Coach Joe Paterno in New HBO Movie

Al Pacino will star as former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in a new HBO movie to be directed by Barry Levinson, Variety has learned.

The official logline for the film reads: “After becoming the winningest coach in college football history, Joe Paterno is embroiled in Penn State’s Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal, challenging his legacy and forcing him to face questions of institutional failure on behalf of the victims.”

Paterno, often referred to as JoePa, is widely regarded as one of the best college football coaches of all time. However, his career came to a sudden halt in 2011 when assistant coach Sandusky’s crimes came to light, with a 2012 report concluding that Paterno and other Penn State officials were aware of Sandusky’s actions but chose to look the other way.

21:40 - ESPN to Air Jalen Rose's Passed Over ABC Pilot
Thanks to Alex for the heads up.

Jalen Rose's comedy pilot isn't completely dead, after all. Though a future for the project (passed over at ABC) is still unlikely, its one produced episode will air on ESPN.

The Janel vs. Everybody pilot will Tuesday evening, at 7:30 p.m. ET /4:30 p.m. PT after an abbreviated episode of First Take. Rose announced the news on a Monday episode of First Take.

It's a rare move for ESPN, or any network, to air passed over pilot — especially so soon after the broadcast networks announced their orders for the new fall season. It hasn't even been a month since ABC opted not to order the 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios co-production for the 2016-17 season.

20:35 - The Originals - Season 4 - Steven Krueger Interview
Thanks to Annika for the heads up.

Everybody thought Josh would only stick around for a few episodes at first. Why do you think is he still alive and important to the show?

The funny thing is, everyone was right! Josh was only supposed to stick around for a few episodes. I remember talking with Julie [Plec] and some of our writers and initially they had planned on Josh being killed by Klaus as a way to send a message to Marcel. I think there are a number of reasons why those initial plans changed. I think the audience response was a big factor. As I mentioned, Josh is very relatable for people watching the show and it's always fun to see a character who's entirely different than everyone else. Of course there is also the comedic element. It's nice to hear a joke or a bit of sarcasm amidst all the dark brooding once in a while. I also think the writers realized that the character of Josh was potentially very versatile. He could intermingle with a lot of the other characters in a unique way and that provided a lot of intriguing possibilities. And overall, I think I was very lucky that the way the character had been written just meshed really well with my own personality and I was able to bring something to the character that was perhaps unexpected and attention grabbing.

His friendship with Davina has always been a great part of the show, that is missing since Davina was killed. Has any other character on the show the potential to be Josh's next bff?

Yeah Josh has really struggled to replace Davina as a bff since she's been gone. He is of course very close with Marcel but that's almost more of a father/son mentor type relationship than it is a true friendship. In some ways, losing Davina has forced Josh to find his own way in this world and make a path for himself amidst all the craziness that constantly encircles him. But I also think there are some very interesting possibilities for relationships between Josh and other characters like Freya and Vincent. We started exploring those a bit in Season 4 and I'm looking forward to see how they evolve in the fifth season.

07:45 - TNT's Horror Block in Limbo
Thanks to 90sbaby for the heads up.

After teaming with M. Night Shyamalan for a Tales From the Crypt horror block more than a year ago, TNT is now partnering with another top filmmaker, Ridley Scott, for a sci-fi block.

“That one got really caught up in a complete legal mess unfortunately with a very complicated underlying rights structure,” Reilly said of Tales From the Crypt. “We lost so much time, so I said, ‘Look, I’m not waiting around four years for this thing’. Maybe that will come back around but in the meantime, Ridley Scott had come up, who has so much creative enthusiasm.”

Reilly eyes a 2018 launch for the sci-fi block. The network could order pilots but also, “it could be a series order. When you got Ridley, there are projects he is potentially interested in getting directly involved.” That could potentially include directing.

As for taking another crack at launching a horror block, even if it doesn’t have the Tales From the Crypt branding, “I haven’t ruled it out. We don’t have a specific property today but we’re open to it,” Reilly said.

01:00 - Alex Rider - Book Series Being Developed into TV Series by ITV
Thanks to 90sbaby for the heads up.

A TV adaptation of the bestselling Alex Rider book series is in the works at ITV, with “Borgia’s” scribe Guy Burt attached to the project.

U.K.-based drama producer Eleventh Hour Films has optioned the Anthony Horowitz books and will make the series, which is being developed with ITV and is expected to attract international partners. The series will follow the adventures of teenage super-spy Rider on his missions to save the world.

The announcement of a TV adaptation comes as Horowitz releases his 10th Rider book, “Never Say Die.” Horowitz created the series in 2000, and it has since notched 16 million book sales for the English-language editions alone.

The TV series will skew older than the novels, which target teen boys, and will be presented as event dramas for family audiences.

Horowitz said that screenwriter Burt “is cleverly expanding the characters whilst staying true to the spirit of the original novels to ensure that the series will appeal to both loyal fans and a new generation of viewers.”

Underworld helmer Len Wiseman, whose TV credits include Sleepy Hollow and Lucifer, will direct. Stephen L’Heureux (Sin City: A Dame To Kill For) will oversee this and produce with Miller, Mazzara, Wiseman and Bob & Harvey Weinstein.

I’m told networks are beginning to circle. The intention is to be a far departure from the films, introducing original characters and timelines within the Sin City universe. Stay tuned.

18:50 - Animaniacs - Reboot in Development from Warner Bros. & Steven Spielberg

After nearly two decades in captivity, the Warner Bros. Studio’s worst nightmares are plotting their next escape. (Details are scarce at the moment, but it’s safe to say there will be much running. And it will be amok.)

Per a report from TVLine’s sister site IndieWire, Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation are in early talks to bring back Animaniacs, the Steven Spielberg-produced cartoon series about three out-of-control children — the Warner Brothers, Wakko and Yakko, along with their sister, Princess Angelina Contessa Louisa Francesca Banana Fanna Bo Besca the Third. But you can call her Dot.

It’s unclear which network would host the new Animaniacs, which originally aired on Fox Kids (RIP!) from 1993 to 1995, before moving over to Kids’ WB (also RIP!) for an additional three years. Spielberg is reportedly involved in the rebooting process.

16:04 - Andi Mack - Renewed for a 2nd Season by Disney Channel

On the strength of strong and consistently growing ratings over its first seven original telecasts, Disney Channel has quickly ordered a second season of ANDI MACK the contemporary comedic series about a 13 year-old girl's typical - and not so typical - life with her family and friends. Production will resume in Salt Lake City in July.

The series ranks as the #1 TV series of 2017 to-date among Girls 6-11, Girls 9-14 and Girls 6-14.

"Andi Mack" was created and is executive produced by Terri Minsky ("Lizzie McGuire"). Michelle Manning ("The Breakfast Club," Disney Channel Original Movies "Adventures in Babysitting" and "Teen Beach 2") is also an executive producer. Phil Baker (Disney Channel's "Good Luck Charlie") is co-executive producer.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "There is not another series out right now - on any platform - that speaks to our core demographic with the authenticity and insight that Terri and her creative team have captured with 'Andi Mack.' This series and these characters are well on their way to becoming this generation's 'Lizzie McGuire.'"

As "Andi Mack" increasingly engages viewers and prepares for an imminent debut on Disney Channels around the world, several programming events are scheduled including "Back-to-Back 'Andi Mack'" on FRIDAY, MAY 26 (5:00-9:00 p.m. EDT). Then, four weeks of new episodes each Friday will culminate with Andi convinced that her parents Bex and Bowie are destined to be together. Meanwhile, Jonah Beck and Amber reach a pivotal moment in their relationship.

Nearing 40 million views on seven digital platforms, linear TV and social media, the series stands apart from the pack as one of TV's continuous ratings growth leaders, recently hitting a ratings high (May 19) in Total Viewers, marking its fifth consecutive week of growth and a 34% ratings increase from its premiere telecast. It also exceeded its high mark among Kids 6-11, Girls 6-11 and Girls 6-14 (May 12).

"Andi Mack" stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Andi Mack, Lilan Bowden as Bex Mack, Lauren Tom as Celia Mack, Joshua Rush as Cyrus Goodman, Sofia Wylie as Buffy Driscoll and Asher Angel as Jonah Beck. Recurring cast members are Stoney Westmoreland as Henry "HAM" Mack, Emily Skinner as Amber and Trent Garrett as Bowie Quinn.

The series is from Horizon Productions and is filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah. It carries a TV-G parental guideline.

00:15 - Fever - Elisabeth Moss to Produce & Star in TV Adaptation in Development at BBC America

Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale, Top of the Lake) is teaming with BBC America and Annapurna Television to develop a limited series adaptation of period drama Fever based on Mary Beth Keane’s novel, with Moss set to star. Moss, who additionally holds the rights to the novel, will also serve as an executive producer on the project.

Fever tells the story of the first known healthy carrier of typhoid fever who became known as “Typhoid Mary” as she spread typhoid across the burgeoning metropolis of early twentieth century New York.

Moss acquired the original rights to Keane’s book and first sent the material to Phil Morrison (Enlightened, Junebug), who signed on to the project as director and executive producer. Robin Veith (The Expanse, True Blood) is currently set to pen the adaptation and will also serve as an executive producer alongside Moss, Morrison, and Annapurna’s Sue Naegle and Megan Ellison.

“I’m so honored to be working with the incredible team of collaborators we have pulled together with Phil, Robin, BBC America and Annapurna. I look forward to telling this story about one of the most infamous women in America, ‘Typhoid Mary,’ a woman whose true tale has never been told. She was an immigrant in turn of the century New York, a time of huge change and progress in America. She was incredibly unique, stubborn, ambitious and in fierce denial of any wrongdoing until her death where she lived out her days imprisoned on an island just off of the Bronx in NY. She is incredibly complicated, something I seem to enjoy playing,” said Moss.

04:00 - MOVIES: Universal Brands Upcoming Monster Movies as 'Dark Universe'; Confirms Javier Bardem as Frankenstein's Monster & Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man

Universal Pictures’ relaunch of its classic monster movie characters, starting with the Tom Cruise feature The Mummy on June 9, will be known as the Dark Universe franchise.

In addition, the studio confirmed today what Deadline exclusively reported last month: Beauty and the Beast‘s Bill Condon is locked in to direct Bride of Frankenstein, which will be the next Dark Universe title following The Mummy, set for release on February 14, 2019 — a day that Uni already had reserved on the calendar for a monster title. David Koepp will write Bride. As such, Uni will not release a Dark Universe title as previously planned on April 13, 2018. The actress portraying the Bride will be announced soon.

In a tentpole era where franchises are prized, the Dark Universe is a compelling concept by Universal to tap into its own classic IP.

To mark this franchise going forward, the studio has unveiled a new motion logo designed by Weta Digital and a musical theme by Danny Elfman that will play before each film starting with The Mummy. See it in action in the above clip.

Uni also dropped a photo this morning with the stars of both imminent and future Dark Universe features gathered for the first time: From left are Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s monster, Tom Cruise as soldier of fortune Nick Morton, Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man and Sofia Boutella as the Mummy. It’s Jekyll’s mysterious multi-national org Prodigium that connects all titles in the Dark Universe. Its mission is to track, study and sometimes destroy evil monsters. Prodigium works outside all governments and protects the public from knowledge of the evil that exists in society.

“We take enormous pride in the creativity and passion that has inspired the reimagining of Universal’s iconic monsters and promise audiences we will expand this series strategically,” Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley said in a statement. “The enterprise masterfully developed by Chris (Morgan) and Alex (Kurtzman) will allow each subsequent chapter the right time to find the perfect cast, filmmakers and vision to fulfill it. As we launch Dark Universe with Danny’s provocative theme before The Mummy and collaborate with a brilliant filmmaker like Bill to weave the story of a very modern woman in a very classic tale, we feel confident we’re off to a tremendous start.”

04:00 - MOVIES: Uncharted - Tom Holland to Star in Video Game Adaptation

EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures is bullish enough on its upcoming Spider-Man Homecoming star Tom Holland that the studio is doubling down on the young actor by building a second major franchise around him. Holland is attaching to star in Uncharted, in what will be redrafted as a prequel to the treasure-hunting action storyline in the Naughty Dog video game for PlayStation.

Shawn Levy is directing a film that will take its inspiration from a sequence in the third iteration of the video game that focused on the young thief Drake, and his first encounter with the professional rogue, Sullivan. This reformulation of the franchise was an inspiration of Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman after seeing the latest cut of the Spider-Man film, sources said.

The studio has tried for years with various directors to get this video game to launch a franchise, with past scripts from Joe Carnahan, David Guggenheim and Eric Warren Singer. Sony Pictures will now set a new scribe to draft the story line that captures the protagonist as he grows into the treasure hunter Nathan Drake, who made the game a top seller. Uncharted is produced by Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner and Ari Arad.
