This week on The Originals, Alaric helps out Elijah and Marcel and offers Hope a spot at his school for gifted children. Hayley and Klaus find out how the Hollow was born from Davina, who later tries to kill Klaus. She’s stopped by Hope. The Hollow, in Sofya’s body, steals the bone that Alaric brought. At the end of the episode, she stabs Elijah with a weapon that contains Marcel’s venom.
Favorite return: I hadn’t been a fan of Alaric these past two seasons of The Vampire Diaries, but he seemed so much lighter this time. I guess his life has been a lot more drama free lately, which probably improved his mood. Rigging his car with explosives was a brilliant move, but what if he’d gotten into an accident? Yikes. I would’ve liked him to have been a bit more involved in the story but for his own sake, it was probably for the best that he wasn’t.
Biggest disappointment: I was a bit underwhelmed by Davina’s appearance. I guess my expectations were a bit high. All she really did was tell a story and almost kill Klaus. I do feel like the writers aren’t done with her. It wouldn’t surprise me if we saw her again before the end of the season.
Favorite flashback: I love all that old mythology stuff. I’ve been dying to learn about the origins of the werewolves since they were first introduced on The Vampire Diaries. I assumed it would include a witch out for revenge but I find it really interesting that the people who were cursed were also witches. So did their magic just vanish? Now I just want to know about the first witches.
Favorite character: Hope is handling all of this so well, you’d almost forget that she’s only seven. But I believe this may be the first time she’s come into contact with betrayal. Up until now, she’d always been surrounded by family who would never harm her so she’s had no reasons not to trust them. Which is why she trusted Davina. So when she found out she’d been betrayed she made her way across town to that church (by herself, who was even watching her?) and just easily broke Davina’s spell. I loved how casually she talked to Alaric about how she’s learning magic. You could see by his reaction that he was impressed. But you see, this is why I’m not sure it’s a good idea for Hope to go to that school. Because I think that within a short amount of time, she’d surpass any teacher. This kid has power, and it’s going to take someone equally powerful to teach her. And to me, the closest thing to that is Freya.
Progress? I guess Elijah and Marcel made some progress this week. They didn’t try to kill each other so that’s something. Elijah even admitted that he regretted killing Marcel, though I do believe that has a lot to do with everything that followed because of it. Look, they’ll never be best friends but a truce seems like the best option right now. Elijah being willing to give Marcel the only weapon that can kill him is a huge step for him. If only he’d actually gotten to give it.
Cliffhanger: So I’ve been convinced that we’re losing an Original this season. Elijah was on the top of my list, however, I think it’s too soon in the season. So if Elijah makes it through next week, it seems unlikely that he would be in a similar position again anytime soon. Kol was second on my list, but since neither he or Rebekah are back yet, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Saddest moment: I felt really bad for Marcel at the end of the episode. I kind of forgot how close he and Davina were. Not only did he see her again for the first time in 5 years but he also had to go against her. It’s a shame they didn’t get a moment alone. Marcel could use a friend right about now.
Best quotes: Hayley: “You’re going to be a lot of fun when she starts dating.” Klaus: “I’m going to be a perfect gentleman, and should any of her suitors fail to meet my expectations, I’ll compel them to the priesthood.”
Elijah: “Good thing you brought the German sports car.” Marcel: “Says the man in the 5000 dollar suit.” Elijah: “9, if we’re counting. I’m not a barbarian.”
Alaric: “Hey, that sounds like fun, but on the way can you drop me off at the ER? Thanks.”
That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
