The Middle - Adult Swim - Review

Happy May! I can't believe that this television season is almost over. Luckily, we do have a few more episodes of left of The Middle. I enjoyed Adult Swim as it focused on the Hecks growing up and starting to move on from their childhood. One of the reasons I liked this episode was Axl and Frankie spent some quality time together which hardly ever happens.

All of the Hecks are at home this week as Sue came home to avoid Axl. She's tired of Axl spending all of his time in her apartment. Unfortunately for Sue Axl also returns home to prepare for his job interviews. Axl is pretty exciting about finding a job, but Frankie notices that his suit jacket is faded. It turns out he used his jacket as a curtain in the Winnebago. Smart. He tries on other suits that are around the house, but they are all too small so he ends up wearing Mike's. Frankie tries to alter the jacket with tape and safety pins, but it still looks ridiculous. Basically the job interviews are a disaster for Axl, and he ends up stabbing himself with the safety pins. I thought it was funny that there were funeral programs in the suit since Mike only wears that jacket to funerals.

Frankie really wants Axl to be happy and decides to buy him a suit he loves. As he tries on suits Frankie starts to get emotional thinking about Axl as a kid and realizing that he's all grown up. Frankie and Axl decide on a navy suit, and then Axl confides to Frankie that he's been seeing Lexie. Frankie is so happy that Axl told her about his life. This nice moment between mom and son is almost ruined when Frankie lectures Axl about the concept of money. Ironically her credit card is declined when she goes to pay. She tries to find enough cash to pay for the suit, but Axl saves the say and pays for it himself. He's saved some of his money and wants to pay so Frankie doesn't have to worry about it.

Later Frankie and Axl have a nice talk about getting a job. Axl is overwhelmed, and Frankie tells him that's part of being an adult. She didn't know how to be a good dental assistant at first, but she learned. Axl won't know how to do his job on the first day, but he'll learn. That's part of being an adult; it's okay to be scared. I really liked this message that Frankie gave to her son. I definitely agree that being an adult can be scary at times.

Sue and Brick also had to grow up some in this episode. Mike gets the pool all ready for the summer, but Brick and Sue show no interest until Mike wants to get rid of it. They get upset and promise they will get in the pool the next day. They still don't get in the pool, but they spray themselves with water from the faucet to make it look like they had been swimming. Brick kind of agrees with Mike- neither one of them seems interested in swimming so maybe Mike should take out the pool.

Sue freaks out and says that their parents are trying to turn the house into an adult house. She's afraid of losing her childhood, and she thinks that Mike and Frankie will get rid of all their stuff. Brick is pretty calm until he walks into his room and finds Frankie measuring something. After that he gets Cindy and his friend to "enjoy" the pool. And by "enjoy" I mean they stand there and splash around. This was hilarious.

Mike finally drains the pool, but Sue and Brick beg Mike to keep it. He's about to give in, but the neighborhood kids come over and tell them how lucky they are to have a pool at their house. The kids seem so excited about the pool that Sue and Brick decide to give it to them.

I agree that growing up is hard so I understand why Sue and Brick has such a hard time letting go of the pool. I'm glad that this episode focused on the not so great aspects to becoming an adult. You have to give away some of your things, get a job, and understand that you're not going to know everything. It's not all glamorous, but I actually think the Hecks have good heads on their shoulders. Frankie and Mike may have their issues, but they care about their kids.

Favorite Quotes:

Mike: "Why do you care so much about something you ignore most of the time?"
Brick: "Well, by that theory, what are you still doing with Mom?"

Brick: "I frolicked once when I was eight. Didn't care for it."

Employee at the Suit Store: "It's so hard to get a job nowadays. I'm glad I'm almost dead."
