Speechless - P-R--PROM - Review: DiMeo Sensitivity Speech
May 10, 2017
MK Reviews SpeechlessSpeechless continued it very stellar freshman run with another powerful episode involving a sensitivity crash curse. The episode was directed by Bill Purple and written by Elizabeth Beckwith from a story by Eric Lapidus.
First and foremost I have to give the writers major kudos for those two opening scenes. Kenneth's first sensitivity speech was a major fail and I loved every tidbit of it. The family being all together and sharing these weird moments just worked so well. Also "Dylan's" cocktail scene was so sweet and hilarious. Obviously, it wasn't Kyla Kennedy who was working the cocktail glasses but I loved her enthusiasm. Kyla turned into such a scene stealer. She is so natural in the role of Dylan and she improved so much from the pilot and her first stories. She carries them with so much more confidence.
Now on to the main story. My admiration for the whole Speechless wrting team jumped to a whole another level after watching this outing. Giving JJ space to interact with other characters, let them read his board and getting to the point that these moves don't disturb the pace of the episode is a major win for the show. I'm just falling more and more in love with this show and I'm so proud of everything they are doing.
JJ's interactions with the outcasts felt natural, very funny and truly sincere. JJ was annoyed by the fake approach everyone was throwing at him and he felt exploited by everyone's fake attitude. The strength and complexity portrayed within JJ's character were truly heartwarming. Him asking Caroline to be his prom date just tipped the glass for me. JJ jumping to her rescue and encouraging her to dance by turning on his disco wheelchair just made me tear up. So wonderful.
Meanwhile, at the prom, we witnessed Ray going through his biggest moral dilemma of the season. He finally found a girl that is pretty and that loves him back her only fault, she used the word RETARD. Riley, played by Life in Pieces alumni Holly J Barrett, was a true pleasure to watch. She was so sweet and innocent but the moment Ray challenged her she went back into her nerdy debate mode and threw Ray out of balance. Their little game of cat and mouse was truly hilarious and with Dylan, in the mix, it just turned into a remarkable and hilarious adventure.
The writers taking a moment and reminding us that despite being JJ's brother, Ray had to come up with his own opinion why the word Retard was wrong was just amazing. I hope this type of writing encourages other families to talk with their children and encourage them to form their own opinion but keep still guide them to a healthy thought process.
Last but not least we've witnessed Maya and Jimmy go through fight night under Kenneth's supervision. Watching all 3 of them interact in so many scenes together was a true delight The 3 of them play so well with each other and each of their interactions has a particular charm and an undeniable hilarious component.
Bringing up the topic of the further relationship with Kenneth without the kids was a nice move and felt very organic. I like how they initially didn't give this too much important and how the decision was a done deal, just unspoken.
With only two episodes left before Speechless wraps its season one run I'm trully excited to see what the writers have in store for us. What are your thoughts about P-R--PROM?
