Hello dear Speechless fans and welcome to the season 1 finale review. C-A-CAMP was a solid outing not as strong as their previous 3 outstanding episodes but still very strong and certainly worthy of Speechless' amazing first season. The season finale was written by Matt Choller and Danny Chun and directed by Christine Gernon.
JJ's story this week did push my buttons a bit but considering the tremendous and beautiful resolution I'm sort of fine with it. But I again have to say that in JJ's bratty attitude we have to consider that this is the first time he is leaving home and family and his insecurities sadly took over. I understand the need to tell this "rebellious" story but I enjoy JJ more in stories like in P-R-PROM, where he shows strength as an individual. Also, JJ must have been aware that his camp trip is costing the other family members their vacation so his attitude annoyed me that much more.
But I did find joy in JJ shutting down every member of his family, Jimmy pulling a tissue after JJ insulted his lasagne made me laugh so hard. I was so furious at JJ when he sent Maya away. Still, this leads to the finales strongest moment. The Kenneth-Maya scene. The chemistry between Kenneth and Maya was the highlight of the pilot and their relationship evolved so much from the initial sparks they've shared back then.
Kenneth: JJ isn't a disabled boy. He is a boy who pushes back and then grows out of it.
Defining JJ in this simple and honest way took their conversation to a whole new level. Maya landing in the camp with a chopper was a worthy entrance for such majestic Mom. Her speech to JJ about how much she needs the goodbye despite him pulling away. My heart did light up when he confirmed h needed the goodbye as well.
The episode did win me over with Ray's story. Ray's girl troubles were a solid storyline from the start of the show and they've certainly peaked in this finale season 1 outing. His epiphany about how girls like him when they don't know who he really iswas hilarious and him playing th mysterious guy game ensured a couple of more laughs.
Him finding his perfect match in Taylor was a nice pay off for all the heartbreak he went through the season. They are a perfect match for sure and can't wait to see their "relationship" play out in season 2.
Meanwhile, the father-daughter story was another weirdly entertaining story. Their mini vacation set into the "Take JJ to camp" trip was really sweet. I liked that they've showed their displeasure of sacrificing their vacation for JJ's Camp trip. Jimmy's speech about how he wants to give his family a better was truly inspiring. I really felt for him and his pain as to not being able to give his children what they deserve.
Favorite Scene of the season: Ray comforting JJ at the beach in R-A-Y--RAYCATION
Favorite Episode of the season: P-R--PROM
With my pick for best scene and episode of the season, I will say godbye to all of you. Enjoy the summer and can't wait to talk Speechless in the fall again. Meanwhile ,
