The finale revealed that Henry has a daughter. How soon will we find out who the mom is, and is it someone from the fairy-tale realm?

Horowitz: We will find out who she is in the premiere. It will be somebody from the fairy-tale realm, and what we can tell you is that Henry and that woman will be an epic romance in the tradition of Snow and Charming.

You said earlier that it won’t be a complete parallel, but when the show started, Henry was the believer and Emma was the skeptic. Is Henry now the skeptic, with Lucy the true believer?

Horowitz: I mean it certainly looked like Lucy was a believer at the end of the episode, and that’s the jumping off point. I will say we really really hope that the directions we go are surprising and exciting. We’re really not trying to retread and do the same thing exactly. But there will be echoes and there are themes that are at the heart of Once Upon a Time, and belief-versus-cynicism is one of them that we’ve dealt with that throughout the show and probably will continue to.

So, there will be explanations for where Emma is, where Belle is?

Kitsis: Oh yeah. I mean, the first thing to say is that the situations we’ve left the characters in — I don’t want to call them happy endings, because they’re not ending — those situations remain. So when the show continues, the idea is that those characters are out there and that’s all been happening. Just because not everyone is a regular doesn’t mean that their stories haven’t continued and that we might not hear about them. We might see some people pop in and out. It’s just going to be in a slightly different configuration.

Deadline spoke to Kitsis and Horowitz Friday, two days before the finale and just hours after word spread of the major cast overhaul.

HOROWITZ: It has been planned for a very long time, so while the announcements came today, they were a long time coming. We had reached a point where we felt like it was time to close certain chapters in the book that we were telling and to take some risks and move forward. And try to continue the spirit of what the show is but really find new ways to tell stories. That meant some characters would stay and some would go. We love our cast. We think we’ve been blessed with the best cast in television. So you know, it’s…it’s been an interesting time, you know.

KITSIS: We went into this season knowing this would be Josh and Ginny, as much as they love the show, they wanted to return to LA so we knew that they weren’t going to be regulars. So we’ve had a year to kind of plan what season 7 – and the ending of this year – would look like.

Will you be recasting any other characters as adults?

Kitsis: Potentially, yes. Not right away. That’s the biggest one.

Horowitz: We want to keep under wraps how we get to Henry grown up and what that means for Regina (Lana Parrilla) and Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) and Rumple (Robert Carlyle), who are returning regulars. There’s stuff that we’re excited to unveil, but it’s not about recasting so much as we’re hoping to open up the universe more.

Besides Jennifer Morrison, who will return for one episode, who has promised to pop back in?

Kitsis: Everybody has said they’d be willing to come back. As our show is and has been for six years, we see people come back all the time. Rose McIver came back and she is the lead of her own show [The CW's iZombie, which was also renewed], so we hope to be seeing everybody.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What came with the decision to leave Once Upon a Time?

GINNIFER GOODWIN: What came with the bittersweet decision to give these characters a happy ending — and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect for that — is room for a new story to grow and flourish as Snow and Charming’s did.

What was that conversation like with Josh when you guys were deciding this would be your final season?

“Hey, let’s call Eddy and Adam to talk about where our very special arc is headed.” — Ginny
“What a wonderful notion, Ginny. You have EXTRAORDINARY ideas! And have I told you lately that you’re ALWAYS right?” — Josh

“I’ve always wished for Emma’s happy ending,” Morrison tells EW. “As the woman who plays Emma — and even as a fan of the show — of course my heart’s desire is for Emma’s happy ending. I don’t think there was ever any part of me that was wishing for her death. I just always wanted to have an end to her story, at least in what we’ve seen so far, be something that was a fresh start, a new start for her, her facing life with new possibilities, with her walls down, with growth behind her.”

While Morrison is exiting, Colin O’Donoghue will continue on with the show next season, as OUAT reframes around his character Hook, as well as Regina (Lana Parrilla) and Rumple (Robert Carlyle) — see who else is exiting here. While Morrison is slated to return for one episode next year, ostensibly her story will somehow continue on through Hook and adult Henry. “I have no idea how they’re planning on doing that,” Morrison says. “I don’t know what the pitch is for the one episode that I’m doing. I’ve always blindly had faith in them having great plans for those things, so I’m excited to see how they choose to set that up. I’m very happy for Colin continuing on the show, and I’m sure they’ll find a creative way to make it work.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Many of the cast we’ve known over the last six seasons are not returning. Can you talk about how the story will be changing moving forward?

ADAM HOROWITZ: Just on a conceptional level, it’s the same show. We’re trying to tell the same kind of stories and honor the DNA of what Once Upon a Time was from the very start. But I think we — Eddy and I — felt that as we approached season 6, the time had come to close the chapter on a lot of the stories we had been telling, which was the impetus behind this season finale, and open some new chapters. While there are some characters returning and some not returning, it’s still the same universe, and it’s still the same kind of storytelling. It’s just that we’re going to be coming at it from a little bit of a different angle. It’s not going to be necessarily Storybrooke-based.

Rumple seemed to get his happy ending with his family, but what do you plan to explore with him next season? The darkness is still inside and he’s just killed his own mother, so how has that changed him?

KITSIS: We saw his happy ending with Belle, and they worked really hard to get it. What’s happening next in his life and what he’s going through is obviously what the story is. That one I don’t want to just fully tease yet. All this stuff is literally just being worked on.
