The freshman comedy, which has aired for only three weeks, has nabbed an early season two renewal. The sophomore single-camera comedy will return for 13 episodes — up three from its first run.
Sources say that NBC was mulling a pickup for either Great News or anthology Trial and Error, which were said to be competing for the same slot. A decision on John Lithgow comedy Trial and Error, which is produced by Warner Bros. Television, has not yet been determined though sources say it's likely to return as well. This upfront season, it's increasingly challenging for shows from outside studios to score series pickups and renewals as networks place a greater importance on ownership amid dwindling ratings and ad dollars.
