The season is heating up and Empire does its best when it embraces the drama. Civil Hands Unclean’s ending was incredibly melodramatic and I loved it. Let’s recap what happened in this fifteen episode of the third season.
After focusing for various episodes on the Cookie-Lucious relationship, this one was more about the Lyon family. Jamal and his father had to overcome their differences in order to produce the upcoming album. Hakeem tried to convince Lucious to have his name on his daughter’s birth certificate. Andre is still figuring out how to have his revenge.
Basically, there weren't so many plot twists until the end. When Lucious did the right thing with Anika and Hakeem, I was sure that something wrong was about to happen. In the Empire’s world, so much joy and happiness can’t last forever, it’s pretty obvious. After 30 seconds, the FBI and child care protection arrive to take the baby. The hell breaks loose, but they have to surrender. I love how the writers can be so melodramatic: the surreal scene was fun and entertaining, I enjoyed it so much.
Besides the juicy ending, the episode had its moments as well: I’m truly craving for more Cookie-beating-people minutes. She is the heart and the soul of the show and she just slays. What will happen next? I’m waiting for a war between the Lyons and Angelo.
Empire didn’t have its best season, but at least it’s still able to entertain the viewers. I don’t know what the writers have in mind, but I don’t think they will be able to go on beyond a fourth or a fifth season without becoming less credible creatively-wise.
And you? What do you think of Civil Hands Unclean?
