The Originals - I Hear You Knocking - Review

This week on The Originals, The Hollow infected both Marcel and Klaus. Through hallucinations, it pitted them against each other trying to get them to kill one another so that it could absorb their power. Elijah and Freya stopped them from killing each other but the Hollow may have still gotten what it wanted. Meanwhile, Freya and Keelin finish the weapon that can kill Marcel and continue to grow closer. Hayley takes Hope to Mary and discovers a connection between the Hollow and her parents’ death. Sofya seems to be working with the Hollow.

Flashback or hallucination: So we saw what appeared to be a flashback of Klaus and Mikael but due to him being infected by The Hollow, it might have been altered to push him towards attacking Marcel. I hope it was because while we’ve seen examples of Mikael’s bad parenting towards Klaus, this would’ve been a new level. After everything Klaus and Mikael have been through in the past seasons, he still seems to have one hell of an effect on Klaus. He’s still his personal boogeyman. The Hollow saw that and used it. Which makes me wonder, if the Hollow can get in the head of two of the strongest vampires around, what will it be able to do once it has a body? How will they ever be able to stop something that can read their deepest and darkest fears?
Elijah vs Marcel: There’s still a lot of animosity between Elijah and Marcel. Not that blame either of them. A lot of things happened that will be difficult to get past. But these two are on a collision course. The Hollow identified Elijah as the person who Marcel hates the most. Elijah pretty much confirmed that he has no problem taking Marcel out. This will come to a confrontation where they’ll either settle their differences or only one walks away.

Most interesting relationship: This episode focused a lot on the relationship between Marcel and Klaus. I can’t even begin to summarize their history but it’s the present that matters. Elijah said Marcel is Klaus’ greatest weakness and he has a point. Klaus won’t be able to kill him if he has to, and vice versa. Klaus gets angry at his family all the time, but he never went as far as killing them. That’s a line he was never able to cross because that would have turned him into Mikael. And he considers Marcel family. The only way Klaus would consider killing him is if Marcel endangered Hope’s life. Marcel, on the other hand, did everything he could this week to prevent a confrontation with Klaus. He doesn’t want to kill him, he made that perfectly clear by keeping Klaus locked up instead of killing him. Neither of them really hates the other but so much has happened that their relationship will never be what it once was. Sometimes trust really is gone forever.

So they decided to use her: Last week I said there wasn’t much point to Sofya and told the writers to lose her or use her. Well, it looks like they decided to use her after all. I can’t for the life of me remember what her problem is with Klaus but she sure seems hell bent on getting payback for something. She’s even working with the Hollow. Now whether she’s a willing participant or infected wasn’t quite clear but my money is on the former.

BTW: Last week there seemed to be a lot of discussion whether or not it was realistic for Freya to be bisexual. Here’s the thing, while society may say “straight until proven otherwise”, it doesn’t actually work that way. And saying it’s unrealistic for a character to be anything but straight is actually incredibly harmful to the LGBT community. Until a character specifically says he or she is straight, anything is possible. (even on the CW, aka queerbait central)
Best quotes: Keelin: “Is this for me? Oh, sweet angel of mercy. This almost makes up for the whole kidnapping thing.”
Elijah: “Need a hand?”
Freya: “Thank you.” Keelin: “Is that gratitude? From the Viking witch who spends her days channeling the spirits to save her vampire brothers. Yeah, you’ve got a concussion.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
