The Middle - Exes and Ohhhs - Review

Exes and Ohhhs was one of my favorite episodes of The Middle. I feel like I say that almost every week, but I really mean it this time! The episode was so perfect with Axl and Sue, and I even enjoyed Brick's story.

Exes and Ohhhs starts off where we left off: Axl is at the party looking for Lexie. He does run into Lexie, but he also encounters Devin and Cassidy. This was already strange, but then it gets even more strange when Weird Ashley shows up holding a bag of her hair. He has a very awkward conversation with his exes and Lexie. "You all look good! Everybody looks good!" Charlie McDermott completely nailed this scene. I could feel how uncomfortable Axl felt.

Axl tells Hutch about his strange encounter with Devin, Cassidy, and Weird Ashley, and Hutch says there must be a reason why he ran into all of them. Axl takes turns meeting with all of them over really girly drinks. Devin tells Axl that if he wanted to see her he could have called or texted, and they could have stayed in touch. But she doesn't seem very upset not having seen him in a while. Cassidy tells Axl they didn't work out because he was never clear about what he wanted. Weird Ashley confirms that he needs to be more direct and clear about what he wants. Weird Ashley actual makes some good points (I never thought I'd write that sentence.) If he had just told her at the beginning he wasn't interested, he could have saved everyone a lot of time.

Axl listens to what the three women said, and he decides to break up with April. It's about time! He is pretty clear that he doesn't want to date his ex-wife. April says that she understands what he wants, and she will leave. Everything seemed to go well (as well as can be expected for a break up) until Sue hijacks the Winnebago (more on that later.)

Sue is very excited about going to the Chancellor's Ball with her new boyfriend Tyler. That is until Sean shows up with a tux and asks her to be his date. I loved this! Sean looked so excited to take Sue, but she has to turn him down. You can tell that she's upset about it and so can Tyler. Sue talks so much about Sean that Tyler tells her to go to the ball with him. She owes it to herself to explore her feelings for Sean. She knows she has limited time to get to Sean before he goes back to college so when her car dies she jumps in the Winnebago and takes off. This entire scene was hilarious. She is driving so fast and so crazy and April looks like she could cry. Axl looks very uncomfortable because he's stuck in a small space with the girl he just broke up with and Sue doesn't know how to drive the Winnebago.

Unfortunately she is too late and Sean has already gone back to Notre Dame. She is left without a date, but Axl saves the day and takes her. I thought this was adorable, and probably one of my favorite moments of the series. Axl definitely did not have to take his sister to the ball and he wasn't forced to. He did it because he wanted to. This guy has grown up so much over the last eight years.

I'm starting to think that Sue and Sean are endgame for this series. He keeps showing up, and one of these days their timing has to work out. Right? I've always liked him so I hope this relationship works out sooner rather than later. I'm also so glad that Axl and April are done! I'm completely fine with Lexie and Axl dating. I like them together, and anyone is better than April (except maybe Weird Ashley.)

While Sue and Axl dealt with their relationships this week, Brick's crisis involved the library closing. He initially buys a few books and excitedly tells his parents that there will be another, bigger sale at 6 A.M. the next morning. Frankie and Mike are not interested.

"I should have stayed with the Fergusons." - Brick

The next day Brick comes home with a microfiche machine he bought at the library sale. He spent $60 on it! He has so much fun looking at old news articles but Mike couldn't care less. I thought it was funny that Brick was really upset that Frankie was arrested, but Frankie and Mike think it was funny. Brick wants to do a prank since he's never done one before, and the three of them head over to the church and change the sign around. I like that Frankie and Mike helped their child mess up a church sign. They are definitely unusual parents.

As I mentioned at the beginning, this was one of my favorite episodes ever. What did you all think about it? Did you love that Axl took Sue to the ball? Do you like Axl and Lexie together? What about Sue and Sean? Leave a comment and let me know!
