The Crown - Season 2 - Claire Foy Confirms Departure + Season 3 - Camilla Parker Bowles to Be Introduced

The third season will jump several years, meaning that she and co-star Matt Smith, who plays Prince Philip, must be replaced by older actors. And Foy, it turns out, is quite ready to say ta-ta to all that.

At the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival over the weekend, Foy said it wasn’t “a shock” to learn about the recast third season. “We always knew when we signed up to it,” said the actress, according to People. “And also, not to be funny, but it’s also a real plus.”

What pressure could Foy possibly feel about playing the most famous, revered woman in England while simultaneously leading the most expensive show Netflix has ever put together? Who’s to say! Foy, who had just given birth to her first child before filming The Crown, also noted that doing a series like this one requires signing away “a lot of your life.”

“I’m going to miss it terribly. But I just can’t wait to see where it goes. I just can’t wait,” she said.

Crown creator Peter Morgan recently teased that the series’s second season will pivot to focus more on Prince Philip. “I find him extraordinarily interesting—his childhood, again, you couldn’t make it up. The soul of Season 2 is about his complexity,” he said at a Royal Television Society event in March. Morgan kept mum, however, on whether the season would explore Philip’s alleged affairs. Rumors have abounded for years about Philip’s supposed adulterous behavior—but The Crown has yet to lean in to those whispers, only gently alluding that Philip has a slight case of wandering eye.

If you gobbled up season one of The Crown in approximately five days over Christmas like we did, you’ll be thrilled to hear that a controversial figure is to appear in the hit Netflix series in the future.

Season two will begin in 1956 with the Suez Crisis, and end in 1963 with the resignation of Prime Minister Howard Macmillan and it is expected to drop in the Autumn, a year after its debut was released.

However, show bosses have teaseed that they’ve already “mapped out” seasons three and four of The Crown and have decided to include a real life character who has grabbed headlines in recent years and who has been at the forefront of the modern royal saga.

Step into the limelight, Camilla Parker Bowles, aka HRH Duchess of Cornwall.

Though there are major details missing from this snippet of information – such as who will play Camilla and whether she has been briefed on her storyline – we are thrilled they let us in on this tasty bite of what is to come.

Producer Susanne Mackie and actress Claire Foy – who played a young Queen Elizabeth in series one and two – attended the BFI and Radio Times Television Festival in London over the weekend and dished on plans for the third and fourth season.

Susanne said creator Peter Morgan is cooking up “wonderful things” for the show and added: “Peter’s already talking about the most wonderful things. You start meeting Camilla Parker Bowles in season three. We have to be honest, season three and four are being mapped out.”

We’re not sure how Camilla – who became friends with the heir apparent in the early 197s but went onto marry Andrew Parker Bowles – will take the news because according to reports (see video above) she is “terrified of the public stage”.
