The 19th episode of Speechless' season unexpectedly turned into one true heartbreaker. One scene completely changed the shows dynamic and turned the tables for the whole DiMeo household. C-H--CHEATER was written by Ron McCarts and directed by Michael Weaver.
Meanwhile, JJ was caught as a cheater. His history teacher realized that Kenneth is doing JJ's tests. Maya was disgusted by JJ's behavior and encouraged her oldest son to pull his own weight and accomplish himself as a person. JJ struggled with the idea as he got quite lazy, but during the meeting with other teachers his inner spite awoke and he decided to start learning and doing it on his own. Eventually, this resulted in JJ earning 81 points on his history and feeling proud of himself.
I loved the Emma Watson joke. JJ's internet history being filled with Emma Watson search data was hilarious, not to mention Maya's and Kenneth's reaction to it. I also enjoyed Kenneth pushing his agenda into everyone's face and no one giving a nod to it. Cedric is such a genius and the way he changes his voice and his weird facial expression work so well and was so enjoyable to watch.
Ray story was also really funny and entertaining. Ray didn't spend much time with Jimmy in recent episodes but it is always a good one when they do. Ray's search for a big bux job was entertaining and I felt so proud of the little guy when his real motives were revealed. He only wanted a job with great income so he could help support JJ in the future.
But before the reveal, we enjoyed a really awkward party Jimmy threw to sell all the jewelry Ray bought to start earning some money. Jimmy inviting all the weirdos he met over the years was a great move from the writers and provoked some great laughs while watching. I mean it was just so DiMeo of him.
The final scene where the family talks about JJ's ability or inability to take care of himself was moving and pushed the whole episode to another level. This is why I personally appreciate SPEECHLESS so much. It talks and speaks about stuff that usually are shoved under the rug. Fighting all those stigma in such and open and brave way is just outstanding. Thank you Speechless!
Another phenomenal episode of Speechless ended with a bloody (in Maya's voice) cliffhanger. I'm really looking forward to seeing in which direction the writers will take this story and how the season 1 of Speechless will end!
