02:40 - Let the Right One In - Vampire Drama Pilot Passed On By TNT

TNT has opted not to proceed with its pilot order to Let the Right One In, a drama based on the best-selling novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist. The project, written by Criminal Minds and Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis, was picked up to pilot in August but it didn’t go into production.

I hear Tomorrow Studios, which developed the project and was to produce the pilot with Turner’s Studio T, is currently shopping it to other networks in its current iteration or as a potential redo of the concept.

Tomorrow Studios, a joint venture between Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios, has two other projects at TNT, series Good Behavior, which was renewed for a second season, and pilot Snowpiercer, based on the movie, which is starting casting.

Let the Right One In, originally set up at A&E and A+E Studios, is an eerie drama about a young boy, long tormented by his classmates, who finds solace in a friendship with a charismatic female vampire who appears to be near his age. The vampire settles into the boy’s small Vermont town with her mysterious caretaker, just as a series of bizarre murders begins attracting the attention of law enforcement.

02:10 - Alexa & Katie - Netflix Orders Multi-Camera High School Comedy Series
Thanks to Jovan for the heads up.

Netflix is making a move in the original comedy series space targeting tweens and teens with Alexa & Katie, a multi-camera sitcom toplined by Disney XD star Paris Berelc (Mighty Med, Lab Rats: Elite Force) and newcomer Isabel May.

Alexa & Katie, which has received a 13-episode order, marks the first multi-camera comedy series produced by Netflix. The Internet network’s highest-profile shows in the genre — Fuller House, The Ranch and One Day At A Time — have come from outside studios.

Created by Heather Wordham (Hannah Montana, Reba), with comedy veteran Matthew Carlson (Malcolm In The Middle, Samantha Who?) serving as showrunner, Alexa & Katie is about two lifelong best friends Alexa (Berelc) and Katie (May), who are eagerly anticipating the start of their freshman year of high school. The friends confront a crisis that leaves them feeling like outsiders at a time when what seems to matter most is fitting in.

19:40 - Monsters of God - TNT Passes on Pilot
Thanks to Milie for the heads up.

TNT has opted not to proceed with Monsters of God, its period drama pilot from Rod Lurie, Plan B Entertainment and Turner’s in-house studio. The project will be shopped to other outlets.

In Monsters of God, written and to directed by Lurie, savagery and violence are the cornerstones of Colonel “Terrible” Bill Lancaster (Garrett Dillahunt)’s holy war against the Comanche in post-Civil War Texas. Despite the peaceful co-existence between the Comanche and local townspeople, Lancaster sets out on a quest to kill off every single member of the tribe, bringing chaos to the town of Slater. Meanwhile, his wife, Cynthia Lancaster (Lauren Ambrose), will let no one get in the way of her obsessive quest to institute her feminist ideals, even if she has to challenge the U.S. Army and make her own allegiance with the Comanche women. Whether by force or free will, change is coming to Texas, and the escalating insanity will reveal humanity at its most monstrous.

TNT’s remaining pilots include Let the Right One In, Snowpiercer and The Deep Mad Dark. Of the network’s previous batch, one, Claws, went to series.

20:20 - My Brilliant Friend - Elena Ferrante Novel Becoming HBO Miniseries with Production Beginning This Summer

HBO-RAI ORIGINAL DRAMA SERIES MY BRILLIANT FRIEND, BASED ON THE BESTSELLING BOOK BY ELENA FERRANTE, TO BEGIN PRODUCTION THIS SUMMER

Saverio Costanzo Directs All Eight Episodes; Produced By Lorenzo Mieli And Mario Gianani For Wildside And Domenico Procacci For Fandango

When the most important friend in her life seems to have disappeared without a trace, Elena Greco, a now-elderly woman immersed in a house full of books, turns on her computer and starts writing the story of their friendship. She met Raffaella Cerullo, whom she has always called Lila, in the first year of primary school in 1950. Set in a dangerous and fascinating Naples, their story thus begins and goes on to cover over 60 years of their lives, trying to describe the mystery of Lila, Elena’s brilliant friend and – in a way – her best friend, her worst enemy.

ROME, LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK, March 30, 2017 – Production is set to begin this summer on MY BRILLIANT FRIEND, an eight-episode drama series from Saverio Costanzo (“Private,” “The Solitude of Prime Numbers,” “Hungry Hearts”), who directs all eight episodes. The show is based on the best-selling book of the same name by Elena Ferrante, which is the first of her four-part series published in the U.S. by Europa Editions.

Produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside and Domenico Procacci for Fandango, the HBO-RAI original series will be filmed in Italian. Adapted for TV and story written by Elena Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo. The executive producer for Wildside and Fandango is Jennifer Schuur. The international distributor is FremantleMedia International.

Says Casey Bloys, president, HBO Programming, “We are thrilled to partner with Wildside, Rai and Fandango to bring the powerful, epic storytelling of Elena Ferrante and her Neapolitan Novels to life. Through her characters, Elena and Lila, we will witness a lifelong friendship set against the seductive social web of Naples, Italy. An exploration of the complicated intensity of female friendship, these ambitious stories will no doubt resonate with the HBO audience.”

Notes Antonio Campo Dall’Orto, director general, RAI, “With MY BRILLIANT FRIEND, RAI brings to TV screens the extraordinary publishing success by Elena Ferrante. This is an ambitious project that satisfies many of the public service’s objectives in the field of TV drama. It is Italian and international; it is universal but complex; it is a huge co-production with a global value. Thanks to a first-time cooperation with HBO, a cutting-edge broadcaster in the field of TV series, and producers now established at the international level like Wildside and Fandango, the Italian TV drama takes another step forward in exporting Italian products around the world. A strategy that looks at quality and the market, playing the cards of Italian creativity and talent and of the high level of expertise reached in the creation and production of TV series.”

Observes Lorenzo Mieli, CEO, Wildside, “Producing a series based on the incredible work of Elena Ferrante is an exciting challenge. Through the eyes and lives of two extraordinary friends, her quadrilogy describes 50 years of Italian history, touching on universal themes and feelings. We and Fandango are particularly proud of having brought together two partners like HBO and Rai for a series with a strong Italian identity, but aimed at a global audience. A project that can mark a further great step forward for original Italian productions and a confirmation of Wildside’s international business.”

Notes Domenico Procacci, sole administrator, Fandango, “This is also a good story in terms of production. We’re working very well with Wildside and Rai, a company that is changing, and that now can, editorially speaking, be more daring than before. Having HBO in the production structure now is exciting: They’ve done some of the best series ever, and their presence is a guarantee, for everyone, of absolute attention to quality. This attention is confirmed with the choice of a director like Saverio Costanzo. The objective we all have is to produce high quality for as broad a public as possible. Exactly what Elena Ferrante did with her novels.”

08:50 - CBS Chief Glenn Geller to Take Leave of Absence Following Heart Attack
Thanks to Al for the heads up.

CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller will take a leave of absence from the network after suffering a mild heart attack, Variety has learned.

In a note to staff Wednesday, Geller said that he is “on track for a full recovery” after resting at home. He added, “The bad news is that pilot season and the Upfront isn’t the best environment to achieve that recovery. After consulting with my doctors, my husband, and my family, I plan to take off a few more weeks and return at the end of May.”

In a separate memo, CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves said that company leadership is “fully supportive of Glenn focusing on restoring himself to 100%.” But, he continued, “At the same time, it’s clear that we must now adjust ourselves to a new situation as we finish our pilots and head into the Upfront.”

No change in leadership structure at the network was announced. Moonves wrote to executives that they will be relied on to pick up the slack in Geller’s absence: “You all know what to do, and will now need to step up with the same energy, dedication and passion that you bring to your jobs every day – and just a little bit more, given the situation.”

The move comes as CBS prepares for its upfront presentation May 17 in New York, where it will unveil its 2017-18 primetime slate and fall schedule. The network has already finalized pilot orders for this development season. Work on next season’s slate will intensify in the coming weeks.

Geller was named CBS Entertainment chief in 2015 following the departure of longtime network leader Nina Tassler. He had previously served as head of current programming for the network. Among the series developed during his tenure are “Superior Donuts,” “Bull,” “Kevin Can Wait,” “Man With Plan,” and “MacGyver.”

Read the full memos from Geller and Moonves below.

From Geller:

Hi everyone.

As many of you know, I experienced a mild heart attack recently and I’ve been resting at home for a couple of weeks. The good news is the doctors have given me an excellent report card and say I’m on track for a full recovery. The bad news is that pilot season and the Upfront isn’t the best environment to achieve that recovery. After consulting with my doctors, my husband, and my family, I plan to take off a few more weeks and return at the end of May.

I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve received from Leslie and my 3rd floor colleagues over the past few days. While it will be very strange not being in the trenches with you during this crazy time of year, I have all the confidence in you — our creative teams and talented executives — shepherding our terrific pilots. I know you will all carry the CBS flag to Carnegie Hall with distinction. I’ll be watching with pride.

All the best,
Glenn
