The Originals - No Quarter - Review

This week on The Originals, the originals siblings are mostly reunited and head to New Orleans to retrieve Klaus. They use Josh as a way to get into the tunnels. Rebekah tries to distract Marcel who eventually catches on. Kol comes to her rescue while Elijah takes on Marcel in order to give Freya enough time to free Klaus. Klaus has been plagued by visions of Cami, who helps him find the strength to remove the Tunde blade. They make it out of the compound but are again confronted by Marcel. They make a deal. The Originals leave New Orleans alone in exchange for Marcel letting them leave. Meanwhile, Vincent tries to find Adam but encounters an unknown entity he seems to have a history with. 

Favorite dynamic: This show has always been at its best when it focused on the family dynamics. Of course, this episode couldn’t highlight every single family bond but it touched on a lot of them. After being stuck together for 5 years, I expected there to be a lot more bickering. But I don’t think they’ve ever been as united as they were this week. Both Rebekah and Elijah put themselves at risk for their family. And even Kol, despite his occasional protest still went back for Rebekah. I do expect things to be a bit different next week. They’ve been so focused on their goal, freeing Klaus, that they might have been holding some stuff in until things settled down. On a side note, it was great seeing Rebekah back in the fold. She hasn’t been this involved in at least two seasons. I hope Claire sticks around for the remainder of the season (and possible the next if it gets renewed). 

Least favorite character: I’m not going to go too deep into this because I expect that I’ll be bringing this column back in the next few weeks. But Marcel pissed me off this week. I completely agreed with Rebekah. They all have red in their ledger. Marcel seems to think he’s so much better than them. The fact is, he hasn’t been alive as long as they have so, of course, his body count is lower. But that doesn’t erase that there is, in fact, a body count and it’s no longer in double digits. Also, he doesn’t get to decide for Hope that she’s better off without Klaus as a father. I’m guessing the writers are planning to have him work together with the Originals once more of the new big bad is revealed. Still, the way things are now, I don’t have high hopes for Marcel’s survival. 

Favorite character: When Hayley said she had an inside source in New Orleans my first thought was Josh. The fact that Elijah and Rebekah went to him first seemed to support that but I’m still not quite sure. He did seem a bit reluctant to help (though I guess giving info is very different from helping to infiltrate). I’m very glad to see that Josh has managed to move on from Aiden and has found a way to be happy again. Can we leave Eddie alive, please? Also, I really like the dynamic between Kol and Josh. Sure, Kol was kind of an ass to him but Josh is the only one he can talk to about Davina and since he hasn’t quite moved on yet, I suspect he’ll reach out at some point. It was kind of sweet of him to call Eddie for Josh. 

Color me intrigued: This week the side storyline revolved around Vincent and whoever has taken Adam. I was more intrigued by it than I expected. I do love my witch mythology and I have a feeling we’ll be delving into more of it next week. Whatever has taken Adam is pretty powerful, enough to terrify Vincent and reach into Hope’s mind. The Originals may have left New Orleans for now but once that thing goes after Hope (which you know it will), I’m sure they’ll be back. I can’t wait to find out more about this storyline. 

Favorite scene: It may have only been short but I loved the scene where Klaus sees his daughter for the first time in 5 years. I know it’ll be even better next week when she’s actually awake but this was still a pretty special moment. It’s what Klaus has been holding on to for the past 5 years. He spent those years hoping that she was safe but not knowing for sure. Now that he sees her, it’s like he can finally breathe again.

Josh: “Why do you guys even need me? I know I’m adorable but I’m extremely small potatoes.” 
Klaus: “Thank you for not abandoning me.” Rebekah: “Well, we did consider it. The vote was rather close.”
