“The Once and Future Flash” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)

TOM CAVANAGH DIRECTS; BARRY TRAVELS TO THE FUTURE TO SAVE IRIS – Barry (Grant Gustin) travels to the future to find out Savitar’s still unknown identity in the hopes of saving Iris (Candice Patton).  Upon his arrival in 2024, Barry encounters future versions of his Team Flash friends, who, following the death of Iris, have become very different people, profoundly impacted by their showdown with Savitar.  It will be up to Barry to infuse a sense of hope back into the team, as he proves to be hero his future friends have been waiting for. Meanwhile, back in 2017, the hunt for Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) continues.  Tom Cavanagh directed the episode written by Carina Adly MacKenzie (#319). Original airdate 4/25/2017.

Interviews

For Gustin — who briefly played opposite himself during the series’ first visit to Earth-Two — tackling an older Barry wasn’t quite the same was when Stephen Amell from sister series Arrow played a much older, grumpier (and pudgier) Oliver Queen on Legends of Tomorrow. Future Barry is “about eight years older, which in a way made it more challenging for me, because it wasn’t like, ‘This is my grizzled, older self,’” he noted. All told, “They were some of the more challenging scenes I’ve done — if not just this year, in the whole series, because I’m my own scene partner.”

Does that choice involve that future vision in which Killer Frost squared off against Vibe (Carlos Valdes)? That remains to be seen — and see it we shall before season’s end. “Yes, you will,” Helbing confirms.

The question now remains whether Team Flash can keep Killer Frost from truly going full-on villain. “He tries to empathize as best as he can,” Grant Gustin says. “He’s not necessarily going through the same thing, but in a way, better than other people, he can empathize and understand that these powers are clouding her mind, [so he] just tries to help her fight through it.” Valdes add: “Some things are going to happen that the team won’t see coming. There’s only so much preparedness that you can have with things like this.”

“Caitlin is on her last legs on the operation table when she suddenly flatlines, so we try and resuscitate her,” Tom Felton recounts. “We give her compressions. We even give her the old electric shock trying to start the heart, and none of it works. We actually accept that she’s dead, but in the very, very final moment, Julian grabs the necklace off of her and immediately she comes back to life, because her Killer Frost genes are very strong.”

Julian’s life-saving decision is not met with cheers but jeers, given the chilling beast it has thus unleashed. “Cisco in that moment straight away says, ‘How dare you do that? She didn’t want [powers],'” Felton says. “I think the rest of the team would’ve rather stuck to Caitlin’s wishes and allowed her to die.”
