Supergirl - Star-Crossed - Review: Love Hurts

I was always told never to lie as you are always found out and this is the lesson learned in this week’s Supergirl. The consequences are hurtful as both Kara and Winn realise the people they were involved with weren’t who they thought they were. For Winn, well let’s just say the poor guy has a type.
The mystery of the Aliens in the ship is revealed confirming our suspicions about who Mon- El really was on his home world. However, Kara can’t see past this and it makes for an emotional scene. We also see the super friends work together sadly missing Supergirl. It is quite an episode with once again a few moments at the end setting things up for tonight’s ‘The Flash’ Musical Crossover.

I am convinced The CW read my words regarding Mon- El and Kara being star-crossed a few reviews back because here we are. I can see there being more trouble ahead but let’s look at how things unfolded this week.

Kara and Mon- El are snuggling on the couch and being all adorable together when a signal comes through on all televisions. It is a voice demanding Mon- El of Daxam is released. Another adorable but brief cut to scene is Maggie and Alex snuggled up on the couch.
At the DEO, we learn a large Alien cruiser entered the atmosphere as the message was sent. J’onn shouts for Winn but he is too busy elsewhere sneaking into the national art gallery with his girlfriend.

The next morning Kara goes to greet the ship but they open fire on her. Mon- El clearly seems to be hiding things but as Kara goes head to head with the ship he soon gives himself up.

Kara kisses him goodbye but at the last second dives into the teleportation beam with him. Arriving on the ship she is shocked to find they all bow to Mon- El and the two Aliens we have been seeing are in fact his parents. Mon- El introduces them to Kara as Queen Rhea and King Lar Gand of Daxam. This makes him the prince. (Not that we all didn’t suspect this was the case weeks ago) Kara isn’t happy but agrees to stay for the family dinner.

Winn gets a call from Maggie who asks him down to the police station. Seems a painting went missing while he was there. Strangely the cameras only show him and not his girlfriend Lyra.

The family dinner as you can expect is a little strained not only with the fact Kara is there but Mon- El doesn’t seem to be pleased to be spending time with his parents after thinking them dead. Didn’t he only say a few weeks ago, in the episode Homecoming, if my father came back I would run.
Kara learns the truth; a royal guard got Mon- El of Daxam in a Kryptonian envoy’s shuttle. His parents got his transmission but only part of it and then a dominator saw him on Slavers Moon. It nicely tied up all the pieces and followed the story. Of course, Kara is even more uncomfortable now and makes her excuses followed quickly by Mon- El.

Back at the DEO Mon- El tries to explain but it’s simple to Kara he not only lied but was part of cruelty that was inflicted on his planet. She tells him she can’t even look at him and flies off.

Winn is still in trouble and doesn’t see that Lyra is involved, Alex and James come to his aid, Maggie gives them 24 hours to clear Winn. I do like the fact Alex came in demanding to know why she wasn’t called and a simple I don’t interfere in your job you don’t in mine from Maggie calms her down.

At the DEO the mystery of why his girlfriend is missing off the video is solved when he tells Kara and J’onn she is a Valerian. Seems they can’t be captured on film. I did smile when Winn tried to show Alex his bruises, no one wants to see those Winn. Winn did indeed get ‘Femme Fatale-ed’ when they discover this isn’t the only heist Lyra has pulled and she usually leaves a boyfriend to take the fall.

They all agree to go after Lyra via tracking her from the Alien Bar where Winn meet her but Alex is concerned about Kara and tells her to sit this one out. She clearly is upset over Mon- el and trying to hide it by being overly perky. Alex suggests she talks to him, however, they are interrupted as Queen Rhea arrives to speak to Kara. She wants Kara to encourage Mon- El to come back with them.

At the Alien Bar, Alex shakes down one of the customers and it’s not the first time she has gotten rough with this one. I did laugh when he said she had anger issues Alex's response was brilliant
‘I prefer leadership skills’. Of course, the Scooby gang, I mean super friends soon track down Lyra.
Winn talks to her but she tells him he was just a con. The Guardian arrives followed by Alex as Lyra has some nasty friends arriving. They capture her but she seems distraught, not about being caught but clearly something else. Winn talks to her back at the DEO and she explains they have her brother. She has been stealing art for them to clear off his debt.
The leader is a known Fort Rozz escapee but the others aren’t as trusting as Winn. Winn breaks out Lyra but I have a feeling he won’t be fooled again but this is Winn we are talking about.

Kara talks with Mon- El about his Mother’s visit and the fact she wants him to return home. Kara clearly can’t see why he isn’t happy his parents are here and he isn’t the last Daxamite. She also clearly can’t forgive him for lying to her.

Winn did have a plan and even though Guardian seems to get taken down by the Alien Boss. Alex arrives in the nick of time to arrest the gang and save Lyra’s brother.

At the police station Winn thanks, Maggie and she clearly takes after her girlfriend with not letting him off lightly.

Despite everything Lyra has done Winn has a big heart and tells her he still cares. Will they have a future? Well, I for one hope it’s not the last we see of this character.

Kara talks with Winn, while he doesn’t know what is going on with Mon- El and Kara he tells her Mon- El had his reasons but she must decide if his reasons are good enough for her to forgive him.

Back at her apartment, Mon- El is waiting for her. He wants to tell her the truth. He was the prince and spoiled until he met Kara but she has changed him. He likes being the hero and spending every day by her side. Mon-El tells her he loves her and she is special. Of course, Kara knows she deserves more than being lied to. Mon- El admits he doesn’t know if he would have ever told her the truth. This scene you can see how torn Kara is, part of her wants to forgive him but she feels so hurt and betrayed. All this is portrayed flawlessly by Melissa Benoist. Chris Wood shines as Mon- El when he realises his actions have cost him the one person he loved. He finally drops all the comments and frivolity and we see Mon- El really wants a chance to be a better man. Kara knows he is used to the easy way but she won’t let him hurt her again and breaks up with him.

Mon- El visits his parent's ship telling them he won’t be returning with them. Kara may have broken up with him but he will still fight with her.

It’s another day at the DEO and Winn has been looking at the device Cisco gave Kara to travel back to their universe. I agree with Winn’s assessment that Cisco and he would get along. J’onn briefs them on a new prisoner who is arriving. The new prisoner seems very taken with Supergirl, in fact, he got caught to find her. He seems to do some sort of hypnotism on her and escapes via the portal to Barry’s Earth as he has a catch up with the fastest man alive.

Kara wakes up in a club and she appears to be a lounge singer. Soon she is thrust on stage. This saga is to be continued in The Flash tonight.

While there was no stand out villain this week it focused more on their personal side and the reveal we all knew was coming. I particularly liked the casting on Teri Hatcher as Mon- El’s Mother, another DC universe alumni. And who better to play the king than Hercules actor Kevin Sorbo. All we need now is Xena as Wonder Woman…
