Supergirl - Distant Star - Review : Ex's and in laws.

This episode dealt with relationships once more, secrets, and of course the un-approving parents of your other half. Something wasn’t quite right and then I realised they’d literally benched Supergirl. The reasoning may have seemed solid but seriously any alien who wants to get to Supergirl only had to do what the one did at the start. Her hiding was one of the daftest ideas on the show to date.

So, let’s take a closer look at the birth of a new villain and why benching your star player never bodes well.


After our brief trip to another earth and a little song and dance number Kara seems in fine form and so does her boyfriend (clearly all was forgiven in the kiss). Mon- El is showing he is a dab hand in the kitchen and when Kara must deal with an alien causing havoc at downtown he even offers to do the laundry.

J’onn has a call from the President, she is concerned about the Daxamites in orbit and asks they do not engage them further. (So nice to see the Wonder Woman herself on our screens again).

Meanwhile, Maggie has persuaded Alex to go to Yoga (I know, most suspected it was the other way around when photos appeared online). They both seem the perfect couple until Maggie bumps into her ex and Alex being the cool girlfriend she invites the ex to dinner ... Why would you do that?

At the DEO we learn the alien with the laser eye had a message seems Supergirl has a very nice sized bounty on her head which will prompt every alien bounty hunter to seek her out. J’onn, Alex, and Mon – El convince her it’s in her and the public’s best interests to lay low. Again, like the aliens aren’t going to go after the public to draw her out again like the first one did. J’onn asks Mon- El to keep an eye on her but he explains he has something to do first. The other thing that troubled me is Alex had plans and I know Kara convinced her to go but wouldn’t she want to be close to her sister seeing as she is being threatened?

Mon- El’s mission is to buy his parents a drink at the alien bar, nice place to entertain Daxamite royalty, but Mon- el knows what his parents are like and asks them to call the bounty off Kara. They deny any involvement and again Queen Rhea asks Mon- el to come back to Daxam with them.

Alex and Maggie are at dinner and it’s no surprise Emily, Maggie’s Ex, is a no show. Maggie wanted some closure as Emily said some horrible things to her when they separated.

Kara is having a game night, we haven’t seen one of these with the Superfriends for a while. They are playing Settlers of Catan to distract Kara from a police chase on the news that she clearly wants to go to help. Mon- El arrives and tells Kara he spoke to his parents about the bounty. Suddenly he has problems with his motor functions and we see an alien outside who appears to be controlling him. Soon Mon-El and Kara are fighting which he keeps apologising for as he has no control. I did get a bit of satisfaction from the face punch Kara gave him, after all, he did lie to her for 9 months.

Winn taking down an alien with a Stapler was a fun moment and seems the all-knowing alien doesn’t know everything. Some impressive mind invasion from J’onn and we learn it was the Daxamites who set the bounty on Supergirl.

Alex, who seems to be ever the hero to those she cares about, goes to confront Emily for Maggie but learns Maggie was at fault in the breakup. Always best to steer clear of ex’s as we might not like what we hear.

Mon- El wants he and Kara to run away to another world, seems a Durlan emissary told Mon- El about it as a kid. Kara wants to talk to Mon- El’s mother. Mon- El has been reading Romeo and Juliet (I think this is a nod to a previous episode title) though as Kara explains they don’t run away and live happily ever after. She convinces Mon- El they should speak to his mother.

They meet her at the Fortress of Solitude but unknown to Kara she will do anything to get her son back including killing Kara and fights her with two Kryptonite Sais. Mon- El stops her from killing Kara by agreeing to go back with her.

At Alex’s apartment, Maggie arrives and Alex tells her she is not angry with the reason for the break up with Emily but the fact Maggie keeps part of herself hidden from her. Kara calls clearly hurt and Alex rushes off.

Supergirl arrives at the DEO slowly healing after her kryptonite attack. She pleads with J’onn to let her go to save Mon-El but he again tells her the President has ordered them not to engage. I loved this scene how Kara pleads with J’onn much like a daughter would help her and he gives in.

Mon- El is attempting to talk to his father and while I must admit the King lacks the presence of his Queen he does seem to have empathy for his son. However, mother knows best and places Mon-El in a cell.

Winn has been fixing the stargate, you remember the transportation device from the episode ‘Supergirl Lives’? He thinks he can calculate it to place them on the Daxamite ship. Alex is concerned about Kara facing Queen Rhea who has kryptonite. Of course, they have an idea.

Supergirl appears in front of Queen Rhea and fights off the royal guard with ease. Soon Rhea tries to stab her but it isn’t Kara, in fact, it’s J’onn in disguise. At the same time, Winn arrives with the immortal line from Star Wars “I am here to rescue you” to which Mon- El comes back “aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper”. Yes, guy’s, geek out over the Star Wars reference later there is a battle in the throne room and J’onn looks to be outnumbered. Winn patches the security feed through and soon all at DEO can see what is happening. Supergirl jumps through the portal to save J’onn and the King arrives to help his wife.

Mon- El rushes in and using a gun to blast through the window which causes them all to hold on except Kara and J’onn. The King orders them all to stand down and as Mon- El leaves he tells his parents a final goodbye.

Alex is waiting for Maggie who has spoken to her ex. I guess bridges are built and Alex proves how understanding she is.

J’onn is in trouble as he went against the President’s orders to save Mon- El and she informs him there will be consequences. As the video link ends we see her transform into her alien form!

Kara and Mon- El are snuggling on the couch and Kara admits she shouldn’t have forced him to speak to his mother but Mon- El tells her his father saw things his way so there was hope.

Unfortunately, Queen Rhea does not see it this way and isn’t pleased with her husband. We see there is going to be trouble when she kills the King and clearly isn’t going anywhere. Now she waits just outside of Earth’s orbit.


So it seems the new villainess Melissa spoke of at Paley fest could indeed be Queen Rhea and it appears nothing will keep her from her son.
As for the rest of the episode, it was directed superbly once again by Kevin Smith but as mentioned above the story again had a few issues.

We take a break for a few weeks and from the looks of the trailer things certainly return with a bang.
