Major Crimes - Dead Drop - Review: "We Asked for Romance"
Mar 21, 2017
JH Major Crimes ReviewsGiggles, grins, and a bit of focus on one of our other recurring characters this week. We got one of the lighter cases this week with the death of a guy smuggling a bale of high end marijuana into California from Arizona.
Dr. Morales' father is visiting LA, and, rather than tell his father he's been lying about the how closely he works with Major Crimes Provenza agrees with Morales' request to pretend Morales is the boss, as only Provenza can, by sending him up a tree to examine the body that fell from a helicopter.
The dead man was carrying a huge bale of high end marijuana. They find the bale in the home of a photographer who had obviously sampled it.
She’s not only burning it in her house, she’s munching on marijuana-laced brownies when she answers the door. In fact she’s so stoned that none of the detectives had to ask any real question. They use it to get a lead on the smugglers and ultimately find the killers.
This was one of those episodes where the case wasn't as important as the jokes or the character stories surrounding it. The killers were almost as funny as Karina, the photographer. Dr. Morales' version of bad cop was funnier still.
I really liked the senior Mr. Morales. I nearly lost it when he said "It's always the ex-wife." I think Provenza declared him okay at that moment as well.
When he thanked Raydor for letting him observe, he filled her in on how pleased he was to learn that the son he most worried about was not only okay in a new country, but was surrounded by friends who cared enough to lie for him. It was very sweet of him to ask that they don't let Dr. Morales know that he saw through the ruse.
The political maneuvering story didn't garner any love from me this week. Winnie Davis continues to come off as petty and small. Why would anyone consider her for the assistant chief position? We haven’t seen any sign of her competence or ability to actually lead.
I get the feeling that before she started jockeying for the promotion; she sat at her desk complaining about the special treatment the major crimes unit receives. I just wanted to yell 'shut up already.' Didn't we cover this on "The Closer" when the unit was initially renamed to Major Crimes?
I can't believe I didn't mention the reappearance of Mark in Juilo's life. I think I didn't want to deal with it last week because I was concerned that the reappearance was too good to be true (meaning I figured Julio would have to give the boy up again.) Happily, Mark's grandparents agree to give Julio full custody.
Julio proves to be as awesome as we all knew he would be. When the kid expresses his anger at his grandparents for leaving him alone (understandable given his mother’s abandonment when she was killed), Julio schools him about familia and forgiveness.
Mark is later able to lift the weight of her failure from his grandmother's heart. I'm pretty certain that adult Mark is going to be a better person than his mother because of Julio’s presence in his life.
You knew I was going to have to save this for last. Last week I noted that I would have preferred that story time given to Buzz' guilt over putting the man who killed his father in jail had been given to a little more romance between Andy and Sharon. In this episode, Andy kept having to cancel and change plans to surprise Sharon. Turns out he's planning to propose and is trying to do something romantic. Finally!
Rusty helps him out and when Sharon and Andy return from work a nice private meal from the restaurant they went to on their first real date is waiting. We see Andy go down on one knee and the rest is left for next episode.
After my failed attempt to guess how the Rusty/Gus living together question would be answered, I refuse to guess Sharon's answer. Do you guys have any guesses? What did you think about the episode?
