“Would you remember the devil if you met him?”
Oh, the dangers of Craigslist! Intelligence is informed of a girl lost in the woods and coordinates a search party. Erin and Jay come across a cabin, but not a girl. But in the shipping container beside the cabin, they find a girl, Julianna, chained. Once at Chicago Med, Erin is reluctant to believe Julianna’s story. It’s odd to see Erin at odds with a victim—she’s normally fully on their side.
Olinsky is back at work for the first time after Lexi’s death. As sad as her death still is, I love seeing Olinsky partnered with Ruzek again. I just about lost it when Ruzek asked, “Can I give you a hug?” and didn’t wait for an answer. Sneak hug attack! So darn cute. Their investigation leads them the deceased former cabin owner’s wife, Geraldine. Through her, they a connection to Julianna’s supposed captor, Austin, the current cabin owner.
Meanwhile, Atwater is called back to the cabin when a pair of bodies are uncovered. The plot thickens… All signs point toward Austin as the kidnapper/murderer, but as Atwater points out, Julianna’s situation doesn’t match the deceased victims found at the cabin. The plot thickens once again when a video of a hostage negotiator surfaces—he’s asking for the return of Shanie, who was kidnapped with her friend Julianna. So, why is Julianna covering up Shanie’s disappearance?
When pressed by Erin, Julianna protests in giving up Austin for fear he’ll kill her friend. Julianna’s intel leads to Austin’s foster brother, Marcus, which leads to Austin. After a high-speed chase, Austin takes his own life. Marcus, however, is alive and well and in Voight’s custody. But once again, twists and turns ensue. Apparently, Austin was illiterate which would make it impossible for him to post the Craigslist ads—at least, impossible to do it himself. So who’s the co-conspirator?
And oh my goodness, here we go again! Everything seems to circle back to Darren, the deceased former cabin owner. Ruzek and Atwater return to speak to his wife, but instead find Shanie and end up locked in with her. It doesn’t take long for the team to put it all together, and though the unit arrives and finds the door, Geraldine refuses to give up the code, pretending she doesn’t know anything. Voight gets a bit confrontational and as usual, gets what he needs by any means necessary. Turns out, Geraldine was behind pretty much everything.
Just a continued observation...Jay continues to solidify his role as Voight’s number two now that Antonio is gone. Have you noticed how on scene it’s Jay who calls the shots if Voight isn’t there? How about how it’s now Voight and Jay, rather than Voight and Antonio, in the interrogation rooms? It will be interesting to see where this goes.
“I love you and I want to stay.”
Will shows up at the station near the start of the hour and warns Jay that someone named Abby got in touch and is in Chicago. Who is Abby and why do I have a bad feeling about this? Thankfully, we don’t wait long for answers. Abby quickly makes an appearance and…Jay’s married!?! Well there’s a nugget from his past I didn’t know I needed to know. Apparently, Abby didn’t sign divorce papers eight years ago, so now she needs Jay to sign again because she’s getting married. But look, I need more. And Jay, that drink is a bad idea. Don’t do it! No drinks! Drinks lead to inebriated reminiscing and regret.
Later, Erin finally asks, and Jay comes clean. He and Abby were in the military together and after some drunken nights, ended up married. Erin is understandably upset, but how fair is that? Sure, Jay’s married and that’s something she should have known. Call me cynical, but I’m sure there’s a plethora of secrets she’s keeping from Jay.
Jay doesn’t take my screaming at the TV advice and instead gets that drink with Abby. She’s way to flirty to actually be engaged to someone else right? Right! She’s actually in town to repair things with Jay, who she is still in love with. I can’t really blame her for that, but she needs to leave. Thankfully, Jay is the wonderful guy we (or at least I) know him to be. “You deserve everything good. I’m just not the guy that’s gonna give it to you.” He does the smart thing and refuses another drink and goes home to Erin. Sadly, he doesn’t stay home with Erin. Instead, he packs a bag to stay with Will for a while so he can work through his past (which I would still love more of). I’m not too worried—even if these two take a break, there’s no way they don’t end up together.
