20:05 - Mayans MC - JD Pardo Cast as the Lead in FX's Sons of Anarchy Spinoff Pilot

EXCLUSIVE: JD Pardo (East Los High, Revolution) has been tapped to play the lead in Mayans MC, Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy spinoff pilot for FX.

Pardo is taking the baton from Charlie Hunnam, whose Jax Teller led the mothership series. Set in the aftermath of Jax Teller’s death at the end of SOA’s seven-season run in 2014, Mayans MC will focus on the struggles of Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (Pardo), a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California/Mexico border. EZ is the gifted son of a proud Latino family, whose American dream was snuffed out by cartel violence. Now, his need for vengeance drives him toward a life he never intended and can never escape. Pardo joins previously cast Edward James Olmos, who plays EZ’s father, John Ortiz and Clayton Cardenas.

Happy Endings alum Damon Wayans Jr. has booked a lead role in Singularity, FX’s futuristic comedy pilot from Sonny Lee (Silicon Valley) and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Conceived by Lee, the comedy is set in a future when artificial intelligence greatly surpasses human intelligence, resulting in profound changes to our society.

Wayans, who was sought-after for broadcast pilots with multiple offers, will play Doug, a guy who loves to be in the moment and is often dressed in Yeezy streetwear. Contrary to some, Doug is happily reliant on AI and seeks out all the pleasures technology has to offer.

Luck alum John Ortiz has booked a lead role in Mayans MC, Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy spinoff pilot for FX.

French actress Marie-Josée Croze (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) is set to recur in Amazon’s upcoming Jack Ryan series, from the Lost duo of co-showrunner Carlton Cuse and writer Graham Roland, Platinum Dunes, Skydance Media and Paramount TV. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is a reinvention with a modern sensibility of the author’s famed hero, starring John Krasinski and Abbie Cornish. It centers on Jack Ryan (Krasinski), an up-and-coming CIA analyst thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. He uncovers a pattern in terrorist communications that launches him into the center of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.

Croze plays Sandrine, a kick-ass Parisian intelligence agent. Croze is a Cannes Best Actress winner best known for her roles in Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Munich, Birdsong and Murder on the Orient Express.

Emayatzy Corinealdi (Hand of God) has landed a recurring role opposite Dwayne Johnson on the upcoming third season of HBO comedy series Ballers.

Corinealdi will play Candace Brewer, a high-powered sports executive who goes toe to toe with Spencer (Johnson). Looking at the whirlwind lifestyles and real-life problems of former and current football players, Ballers stars Johnson as ex-superstar Spencer Strasmore, who has reinvented himself as a financial manager for today’s players in sun-soaked Miami. Corinealdi was just cast in CBS drama pilot The Get alongside Brad Garrett.

19:00 - Blood and Whiskey - Drama Based on Jack Daniel's Life in Development at WGN America from Aaron Paul

WGN America is ready to down some whiskey with Aaron Paul.

The cable network has put in development Blood and Whiskey, a drama based on the life of whiskey guru Jack Daniel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Based on Peter Krass' biography Blood and Whiskey: The Life and Times of Jack Daniel, the drama tells the harrowing true tale of Jack Daniel, boy distiller, teenage moonshiner and the outlaw who built the world’s biggest whiskey empire out of the ashes of the Civil War.

Andrew Colville (Mad Men, Lone Star) will pen the script for the drama and exec produce alongside Stan Spry and Jeff Holland of The Cartel, Drew Brown at Fascination Street and Breaking Bad grad Paul and Zack Beckman at Lucid Road Productions. A studio is not yet attached.



11:15 - Dracula Now - Nick Wechsler Developing Drama Series based on Bram Stoker Novel

PARIS – Nick Wechsler and Scanbox’s Joni Sighvatsson have joined forces to produce “Dracula Now,” a contemporary Gothic drama series adapted from an edgier, more political reworking of Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel.

“Dracula Now” is based on “Powers of Darkness” (“Makt Myrkranna”), a reworking of Stoker’s “Dracula” by Icelandic writer Valdimar Ásmundsson in 1900, just a few years after the original novel appeared. “Powers of Darkness” has just been translated into English by Hans de Roos, in an annotated edition featuring a preface by Dacre Stoker (the great-grand nephew of Bram Stoker) and an afterword by vampire and horror scholar John E. Browning.

The 10-episode TV series will transpose the action to present times and emphasize the political dimension of the novel. In the series, Dracula will be a seductive, manipulative megalomaniac from Transylvania on a ruthless quest to conquer Europe.

Heels, an hourlong drama set in the outrageous world of independent professional wrestling, has been put on the fast track at Starz. I hear the project from Paramount TV is in active development, eyeing a potential eight-episode straight-to-series order.

Written by Michael Waldron and to be directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez (The Stanford Prison Experiment), Heels is the story of two brothers and rivals – one a villain, or “heel,” in the ring; the other a hero, or “face.” Real conflicts play out in fake matches as they war over their late father’s wrestling promotion, vying for national attention in small-town Georgia.

00:40 - The Alienist - Matthew Shear Joins TNT's Psychological Thriller Drama Series

Matthew Shear (Mistress America) has joined the cast of TNT’s upcoming straight-to-series drama The Alienist, a co-production of Paramount Television and Turner’s Studio T. Based on the international best-selling novel by Caleb Carr, The Alienist is a psychological thriller set during the Gilded Age of New York City in 1896.

He will play Police Sergeant Lucius Isaacson, an extremely intelligent, focused man whose medical studies have helped hone his expertise in criminal science. Bright, pleasantly likable with a passion for his work, he believes that bones provide the most accurate information when it comes to forensics. He joins his twin brother Marcus in helping unravel a disturbing mystery. Shear was a break-out star of Noah Baumbach’s 2015 Sundance pic Mistress America.

00:40 - Howards End - Julia Ormond, Philippa Coulthard, Joseph Quinn & More Join Starz & BBC Miniseries

Starz and BBC are rounding out the cast for limited series Howards End, based on E.M. Forster’s classic novel. Julia Ormond (Temple Grandin, Mad Men) and newcomers Philippa Coulthard (The Catch, Secrets and Lies), Joseph Quinn (Dickensian) have signed on to the four-part series, alongside Rosalind Eleazar (National Treasure, NW) and Alex Lawther (Imitation Game, Black Mirror). They join previously announced Hayley Atwell, Matthew Macfadyen, and Tracey Ullman.

Howards End tells the story of two couples caught in a swirling landscape of social and class divisions in turn-of-the-century England. Playground is executive producing in association with City Entertainment and KippSter Entertainment. Kenneth Lonergan is penning the adaptation, directed by Hettie Macdonald.

It focuses on Margaret Schlegel (Atwell), an intelligent, idealistic, bohemian young woman who is courted by the older Henry Wilcox (Macfadyen), a self-made conservative businessman, after his wife Ruth Wilcox (Ormond) dies unexpectedly. Meanwhile, Margaret’s passionate and capricious younger sister Helen Schlegel (Coulthard) takes up the cause of Leonard Bast (Quinn), a young bank clerk who falls on hard times at work and at home with his partner Jacky (Eleazar). In the absence of their parents, who have died, the sisters’ loving but interfering Aunt Juley (Ullman) tries to keep the young ladies and their brother Tibby (Lawther) on the straight and narrow.

00:40 - Scalped - Alex Meraz Cast in Lead Role in WGN America's DC Comics Pilot

Alex Meraz (Suicide Squad) has been cast as one of the leads in WGN America’s drama pilot Scalped. The project, which will feature a predominantly Native American cast, was written by Doug Jung (Banshee) based on the DC graphic novel series written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by R.M. Guéra.

A modern-day crime story set in the world of a Native American reservation, Scalped explores power, loyalty and spirituality in a community led by the ambitious Chief Lincoln Red Crow as he reckons with Dashiell Bad Horse (Meraz), who has returned home after years away from the reservation. The Native American casting will be a first for a television series in recent history.

Merez’s Dashiell was exiled from the Rez by his mother at age 13 and returns home after 15 years as a criminal with a mysterious agenda. His return sets him on a violent path of self-discovery about his place on the Rez and on a collision course with both his estranged mother and Red Crow.

Amazon has put in development Late Bloomers, a half-hour comedy series from Ben Stiller & Nicky Weinstock’s Red Hour, Deb Spera and Maria Grasso’s One-Two Punch Productions, Survivor’ Remorse executive producer Victor Levin and ITV Studios.

Created and written by Donal Lardner Ward (How to Make It in America), Late Bloomers follows a fortysomething couple that’s randomly selected for a human trial of an experimental drug therapy that halts aging. In a culture obsessed with staying young, the series explores the be-careful-what-you-wish-for reality of extending life and the unexpected ways it impacts marriage, children, friendships, career ambitions and the eternal quest for meaning. Red Hour’s Stiller and Weinstock executive produce with One-Two Punch’s Spera and Grasso, and Levin. ITV Studios, where One-Two Punch has had an overall deal, is the studio. Spera and Grasso launched together the company, which is now run by Spera as Grasso left last year to join Marti Noxon’s production company.

Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Queen of Katwe) has been cast as a series regular in Showtime’s upcoming hourlong drama The Chi, from Lena Waithe, Elwood Reid, Common, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Fox 21 TV Studios. Created/executive produced by Waithe, executive produced/showrun by Reid and executive produced by Common and Kaplan, The Chi is a coming-of-age story that follows a half-dozen interrelated characters on the South Side of Chicago.

Mwine will play Ronnie, a former military man somewhat surrendered to the challenges of life on the South Side. Ronnie spends most of his day on a neighborhood stoop with friends who are in the same boat. He spends the other part of his day caring for his feisty grandmother. When his former girlfriend (and mother to a boy he considers his son) puts pressure on him to avenge a murder, Ronnie reluctantly is set on a misguided path in an effort to win her back. Mwine replaces Jason Weaver, who played the role in the original pilot. Mwine appeared in the features Queen of Katwe and Blood Diamond and has recurred on series The Knick, Bosch, Tremé and Heroes, among others.

EXCLUSIVE: Having hit its best viewership numbers ever in 2016 with double-digit growth, the U.S. home of Doctor Who, Orphan Black, Top Gear and more recently Dirk Gentley’s Holistic Detective Agency and the upcoming Planet Earth II is now getting into business with Kevin Smith. “He is attached to write, direct and executive producer a series based on the Sam And Twitch comic book series for us,” BBC America president and GM Sarah Barnett revealed about the new project the Clerks filmmaker has in development with the channel.

“They were originally introduced in Spawn, and it’s Todd McFarlane’s comic book series about these big-city homicide detectives who face a series of super grizzly crimes that are connected to the occult,” Barnett adds. “I bumped into Kevin Smith at Sundance and he is beyond himself excited about this, about the show,” she says of the latest high-profile addition to the channel that AMC Networks has run since October 2014.



21:40 - Indigo - Chris Colfer to Star in Sci-Fi TV Drama Readied to Be Shopped to Networks

Chris Colfer is plotting his return to TV. The Golden Globe-winning Glee grad is teaming with Sonar Entertainment to develop sci-fi drama Indigo, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The drama, which Colfer created as a starring vehicle for himself, explores the mysterious world of Indigo children — those who are misdiagnosed but wildly believed to possess extraordinary paranormal abilities — and the dark forces working to exploit their powers.

Colfer will pen the script for the potential pilot and is expected to direct it as well. Keith Quinn and Colfer's manager Rob Weisbach also exec produce alongside the actor.

A network is not yet attached but the plan at the moment is to shop the project to broadcast, cable, premium and streaming services.

“Top of the Lake: China Girl” will see Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) reprise her Golden Globe winning role as Detective Robin Griffin. She will be joined by Nicole Kidman and Gwendoline Christie (“Game of Thrones,” Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Also joining the cast are David Dencik (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures, Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell) and Ewen Leslie (The Daughter).

“Top of the Lake: China Girl” is a crime mystery story that begins four years after the explosive ending of series one. After the shocking events that rocked her hometown in New Zealand, Detective Robin Griffin, recently returned to Sydney, is trying to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Robin realizes “China Girl” didn’t die alone. Robin’s search to discover “China Girl’s” identity takes her into the city’s criminal underbelly and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart.

According to Ladsbrokes, the 56-year-old Doctor Strange actress is the new odds-on favorite to become the new Doctor. She is currently going off at 7-2 odds, making her the new frontrunner for the job. In the long history of Doctor Who, no woman has ever played the Doctor and people are becoming more convinced that the BBC is going to go that way with it after Doctor Who season 10. Netflix's Love is adding a little more friend time for Gus.

Chris Witaske has been promoted to series regular on the Judd Apatow-produced Netflix comedy, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Witaske plays Chris, the best pal to leading man Gus (Paul Rust), on the single-camera comedy. The streaming giant renewed Love for a third season ahead of the premiere of its sophomore season, which is set to bow March 10.



05:15 - Jawbreaker - E! Developing TV Adaptation Based on Teen Film

E! has put in development Jawbreaker, a reimagining of the teen cult classic film, as an hourlong scripted series, from Sony TV. The film’s writer-director Darren Stein and George Northy (G.B.F.) are set to co-write the TV adaptation and executive produce.

The Jawbreaker series is a wild reimagining of the 1999 film set in the fame-obsessed world of Beverly Hills. The adaptation follows a new clique whose world is rocked by an accidental killing at a bachelorette party. The incident sets in motion an audacious, juicy soap in which the women will go to great lengths to keep their secret hidden. Should the project move forward, E!’s sister studio Universal Cable Productions likely would come aboard to co-produce with Sony.

The Brink alum Geoff Pierson is set for a recurring role on ABC’s Designated Survivor in a role which reunites him with his former 24 co-star Kiefer Sutherland. In Designated Survivor, from The Mark Gordon Co. and ABC Studios, Tom Kirkman (Sutherland), a lower-level cabinet member, unexpectedly becomes President after a devastating attack on Washington.

Pierson will play Cornelius Moss, the former President of the United States who Tom Kirkman (Sutherland) hopes to appoint as Secretary of State.

FX's Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans MC, is quickly adding cast members. The pilot from Kurt Sutter has tapped Clayton Cardenas to co-star, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Mayans MC is set post-Sons of Anarchy and centers on EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California/Mexico border who struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel as well as his need for respect from the women he loves.

Cardenas will play Angel Reyes, EZ's brother. He's a full patch member of the Mayans MC, Santo Padre. He lives with the burden of being the "lesser son" in a proud Mexican family who loves few and trusts even fewer.
