Supergirl - Mr & Mrs Mxyzptlk - Review: A Tricky Valentine's

Supergirl 213

Written By Jessica Queller & Sterling Gates
Directed By Stefan Pleyszczynski

When I first read the promo’s, I was excited for this episode as I love Sterling Gates Adventures of Supergirl comic series. Maybe that is why I was disappointed not only in some of the dialogue which I didn’t expect in Supergirl but the overall tone. It's Valentines should we have more love in the air and romance not stalkers and macho man antics.

It starts up where we left off the last episode. Mxyzptlk is a fifth-dimensional being who can bend things to his will. In fact, he is kind of like a Q from Star Trek Series and just as annoying. However, he has rules, things he can’t stop. He has decided he wants to marry Kara and nothing or no one is going to stop him. His threats soon turn sinister like all stalkers when his demands are not made, making you wonder is this really fun!
I know some would argue the Mon- El romance was what it was all about but this should have been handled like star-crossed lovers. Kara is the girl from Krypton, he is a boy from Daxam. To have him make statements about relationships were easier when he objectified women was very wrong. I think the intent to be funny fell very flat with audiences and they soon took to social media to voice their concerns.
The episode though had its wonderful moments. Kara out-tricking the nasty Mxy had me cheering. I also adored the Maggie and Alex scenes. They are once again moving forward with their relationship and Maggie revealing her past. Winn also found a new lady friend, and J’onn phoned home sending a message to M’gann.

So, let’s look at the episode.

Kara and Mon-El were about to kiss at the end of last week’s episode when MXYZPTLK turns up declaring his love for Kara Zor-El. Of course, Mon-El isn’t too happy about the interruption but he soon gets magically whisked to away to the DEO in his underwear. (Not to objectify but I am sure more than a few fans appreciated that scene.)
Kara is confused as to who is this mischievous being is. He introduces himself which is quite a mouthful and tells Kara he has watched her from afar and no other woman is for him. He soon has her in a Vera Wang wedding dress and Kara politely puts the breaks on him. Not taking no for an answer he instead sees it as a challenge and plans to win her heart.

So, it seems our Mxy is an interdimensional being from the 5th dimension. They are known as trickster’s and quite dangerous.

Alex and Maggie are having breakfast, they seem to have a nice routine between them and clearly are happy. Alex gets a Valentine from her Mum, seems it’s a tradition, but she finds out Maggie hates Valentine’s day.

At the Alien bar of no name, Winn meets an interesting girl who stops him getting bullied and he ends up offering her a dinner date. Lyra is from Starhaven which Kara had described as smelling like cinnamon. We soon learn it is not like that anymore.

Supergirl is stopping a group of armed robbers who still haven’t got the memo bullets bounce off her. Mxyzptlk shows up and we see how dangerous he is when he nearly kills the robbers while he tries to protect Kara. Back at the DEO, Mon- El tells Kara they killed his kind and to watch out. Which infuriates her, as we know she can take care of herself.

Kara and Alex head to her apartment and talk about Maggie’s dislike of Valentine’s day. However, their sister bonding time is soon interrupted when Parasite, yes, we thought she killed him too, shows up. Kara is soon joined by Mon -El but when they think it's Superman coming to their aid we see it’s Mxyzptlk. I think he may have borrowed Superman’s suit. In fact, it seems he conjured the whole situation up.
Mon and Mxy seem to be ready to have a brawl in the street until Supergirl steps in. Mon- EL thinks she is siding with Mxy. They both get into a huge argument back at the DEO. Macho Mon- EL comes out to play, joined by a touch of the green-eyed monster. Supergirl isn’t some Damsel in distress Mon-EL.

At Alex’s apartment, Maggie arrives to a table full of all her favourite things waiting for her, courtesy of Alex. She is clearly upset but Alex won’t let her walk out until she tells her the real reason for hating Valentines. It’s a sad but often very true story. Maggie liked her best friend, told her via a card on Valentines and asking her to the school dance. Her friend told her parents who then told Maggie’s parents and she was kicked out the house. Maggie lied to Alex because she wanted her coming out story to be better.

Mon – El, moping after Kara has told him they won’t work (again!), comes across Winn and a DEO arsenal. There just happens to be one that could affect a 5th-dimensional being. Winn is also having lady trouble and asks Mon- El for advice. When Winn leaves, Mon – El steals the Alien artefact.

Winn is late for his date but, bless him, he had a good reason and Lyra soon forgives him and the Alien bar sees quite a PDA from those two.

Mon- El is looking for Mxy who soon appears before ‘talk dark and blandsome’ as he called him. Mon- El once again gets his Macho on and I feel his ego is what causes him almost to get killed. Thankfully Kara saves him but promises to marry Mxy.

I feel they are portraying Mon- El fighting through years of Daxam upbringing and wanting to try and be better for Kara. So it's not a surprise he later turns up at her apartment and begs her not to marry Mxy. Kara tells him it’s too late and, dejected, Mon- El leaves.

At the DEO both Kara and Maggie are looking for Alex and Kara tells Maggie to put her feelings aside and give Alex the Valentines she deserves. Yes, it was a bit of a ‘don’t mess with my sister’ speech.

Kara has arranged to marry Mxy at the Fortress of Solitude but when she arrives you see she is trying to get under his skin. Kara then, single-handed, out tricks the trickster and sends Mxy back to his own dimension.

Winn has another date with his new lady Lyra who seems just as insecure as Winn.

Maggie leaves a gift for Alex and does, in fact, give her a Valentine full of romance. Nothing like a prom and a dance with the one you love and, though they have yet to say it, these two look to be heading in that direction.

Mon – El turns up at Kara’s apartment to apologise for his behaviour. He explains Kara is his Kryptonite. While not his most romantic of statements I guess he was saying he doesn’t know how to act with all these feelings. In fact, he never has felt this way for anyone. Kara explains she didn’t mean what she said, she was just protecting Mon- El. So, the delayed kiss happens but I still see trouble on the horizon for this romance. We know Kara is helping to make him a better man.

Last week I felt Supergirl was back on track so the step back this week was disappointing I can see why they tried for a lighter storyline given the upcoming week's synopsis. Supergirl is at its best when Supergirl is the hero and Kara is a ray of sunshine. As for the macho man antics, leave it to Arrow.

So what are your thoughts about the episode?
