Speechless - O-S--OSCAR P-A--PARTY - Review: Inclusivity

Once again Speechless topped itself with another brilliant episode as the show was able to give all the main characters space to shine and develop properly and still being able to send a meaningful story.

The Oscar party thrown by the DiMeo's was a complete flop this year. A new mom crushed the Mom group and ruined all of their perfect chaos. Becca, the perfect mom, was played by the hilarious Trophy Wife alum Michaela Watkins and she played great against Minnie Driver's Maya. Their fight in Becca's pantry was simply hilarious and brought me to my knees, I laughed so hard. Dylan forcing them to make peace was really sweet and it was nice to see them bound and accept their flaws and insecurities. Also laughed really hard at them trashing the moms with normal kids at the end.

A great part of the episode were the other moms and Maya hazing them for accommodating to Becca's perfection. The show brought in some great guest stars, such as FotB alum Susan Park, Superstore's Irene White and others. The puns and jokes were just simply on point, from unibrow joke to Maya hazing Nathalie for suddenly having great posture instead.

Also happening on the party, Kenneth taking care of the disabled kids and trying to make them feel included and able to play a movie trivia game. It was a funny but still a meaningful story. Kenneth taking the time and making the extra effort for the kids was moving and funny at the same time. Also, the kids going off the grit and getting involved into a brawl was hilarious. Especially, as Kenneth prepped for all of them to have the same degree of disability. I really hope Cedric Yarbrough's performance will be recognized by the award people, cause his performance throughout the season has been stellar, just as Minnie's and John's.

Meanwhile, our sweetheart Ray suffered another heartbreak but to be honest I saw it coming from a mile. Ray as a free spirit is just as wrong as someone who we don't wanna mention being President. Still, all the scenes involving Ray and his free-spirited crush, Zelda were funny. Overall Ray brought in all the major laughs this week. The opening scene with Ray channeling Maya to find her keys was just a hilarious scene, gave me small freaky Bates Motel's vibes but still very entertaining. Also, Ray got his moments to shine while cleaning up the house for the party. His excitement about the house being actually quite decent was just adorable sweet, but the disappointment when Maya crushed his joy was truly hilarious.

Jimmy's side story was funny indeed. Exploiting the fathers for his own personal gain was awful but funny at the same time. John Ross Bowie was just pure comedic gold. His facial expressions and simplicity in ordering the dads around just clicked on every possible level. The dads later bonding and throwing a Dad party was a nice ending to the story. It was nice to see the father angle of families that have disabled children, especially in an episode that heavily focused on the mother angle.

Speechless is already on episode 16 and we have just 7 more eps to enjoy till season 1 wraps. Speechless is going on a mini hiatus and returns on March 8th. Meanwhile, stop by the comment section and let me know what you think about this week's episode of Speechless.
