Shadowhunters - Love Is a Devil - Review

Feb 23, 2017

This week on Shadowhunters, Simon finally tells Clary how he feels and they become a couple. Alec and Magnus host Max’ rune ceremony party and Iris decides to mess with everyone’s head. She reveals that she’s working for Valentine because he kidnapped Madzie and calls in her blood oath with Clary. Izzy’s addiction continues to get out of control. She convinces Raphael to give her his blood. Maryse tells Alec and Jace that Robert is cheating and she apologizes to Jace.

Should know better: Bad Raphael! He should have refused Izzy. He knows how bad this can get. If anyone had seen the bite marks before Izzy covered them up, hell, if Maryse had seen them, there would have been an army of Shadowhunters at his door to take out his entire clan. I hope he switches from enabling her to helping her soon.
All grown up (or at least getting there): I absolutely adore Max. He’s totally a combination of his siblings. Responsible when he has to be like Alec, hides and shows his feelings the same way Izzy does, and occasionally arrogant like Jace. His entrance at his rune ceremony was 100% Jace, though. I do feel bad for him. He’s been stuck in Idris with his parents fighting all the time and hearing his mother tear down both his brothers. Kids are impressionable, we saw how easily he adopted Maryse’s behavior towards Jace. Let’s hope she gets her act together and sets a better example in the future.

Most responsible Lightwood in the house: I was so proud of Alec this week. Last year the thought of anyone, let alone his mother finding out he’s gay would have scared the crap out of him. This week he and Magnus hosted a party for all of his Shadowhunter friends. He stood up to his mother several times this week. Whether it was about Magnus, Max or Jace, he didn’t shy away from confrontation and stood up for what he believed in. And as strained as his relationship with his mother has been lately, he still immediately stood up for her after finding out about his father’s affair. The only thing that had me slightly worried was how quickly Clary was able to talk him onto a ledge. I know it was a hallucination but I’m not sure how much Iris had to do with how the person suffering from the hallucination reacted in that situation.

Favorite pairing: I’ve got to admit, I wasn’t a fan of Simon and Clary in the books and I’m still a Sizzy shipper. However, it’s great to see Simon so happy. At first, I thought Simon would be interrupted by the next Shadowhunter emergency but he actually said it. And I was so proud of him in that moment. Regardless of her reaction, one way or the other he would be able to move on and not wonder “what if” for the rest of his life. I was completely surprised by Clary’s reaction. I thought she’d have to think it over for the rest of the episode or something. And judging by how quickly she got jealous later in the episode, there had to have been feelings there already. I guess there were signs that I missed. I hope the writers let them be happy for a while. I know Jace will come into play again soon but just let them have a few episodes of bliss before everything goes to hell again.
Random highlights
- Cats!
- Jace being protective of both Alec and Magnus
- Magnus slowly backing out of the room when the Lightwood family drama starts
- Magnus being the only one who has a clue of what’s going on and saving the day. Aren’t you glad you had the party at his house?
- How many Shadowhunters does it take to catch a cat? Apparently a lot.
- Clary refusing to go along with Jace’s secrecy.
- Iris actually thinking she’s a match for Magnus. That was funny.
- Madzie being a cutie and being fully aware that Valentine is bad news.
- Did I mention there were cats?

Best quotes: Max: “Mom doesn’t like you having a warlock boyfriend.” Alec: “ And you?” Max: “Whatever, I don’t care.”
Alec: “Traditions change. Especially those based on ignorance.”
Maryse: “I don’t regret taking you in for one second.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
