Scene Of The Week - February 12, 2017 + POLL

12 Feb 2017

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

24: LEGACY, "1:00 PM – 2:00 PM", February 6, 2017, Actors: Miranda Otto, Dan Bucatinsky, Corey Hawkins, The Scene: Ingram and Shalowitz get arrested
Darth Locke:
Ingram and Shalowitz are arrested, while Eric is still looking for money in the police evidence room. Some fans expecting 24: Legacy to more than 24, might be a bit disappointed, but for someone who just enjoyed 24 for being the kind of ridiculous fun action show it was, I find that despite Jack's presence being missed, the sequel show still feels the same! I chose this scene because it's so true to par with what normally went on with CTU and Jack. But I'm also just enjoying Miranda Otto's role and the way she's reacting to things.

APB, "Hard Reset", February 6, 2017, Actors: Justin Kirk and more
The Scene: The whole city gets on board with APB
Luana Arturi:
The whole city gets on board with APB (and so do I). This episode was exciting throughout, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what's next.

CODE BLACK, "Fallen Angels", February 8, 2017, Actors: Marcia Gay Harden, Emily Alyn Lind and more, The Scenes: Leanne fights to keep Ariel off of a ventilator & Leanne volunteers to try the new vaccine
Aimee Hicks:
Leanne fights to keep Ariel off of a ventilator. This scene was about showing how important Leanne and Ariel have become to one another. They each fill a void left in the other by tragic loss. At this point neither knew if they were going to have a future let alone one that would involve each other, but they were desperately hanging on to one another for comfort through this ordeal. As soon as Leanne was quarantined she went straight to Ariel’s side. She would later admit to feeling alone which is why she was willing to take the risk to try and help save everyone, but the truth is that before the vaccine even became an option she was more than willing to give her own life to give Ariel a chance at survival. When Ariel started to lose her airway there was this very brief moment of maternal panic that was evident in Leanne, but she quickly entered doctor mode in order to help find a way to stabilize her. After she convinced Ethan to just suction out the blood instead of putting her on a vent she found a happy medium between mother and doctor. Even though Ariel was terrified and there was a ton of chaos going on around them Leanne was still able to get through to her. She used a firm tone to draw Ariel’s attention to her then she used a very soft and very maternal voice to coach Ariel through the terrifying moment. The tear that Ariel shed was heartbreaking because it showed that even though she puts on this tough girl act at heart she’s really just a young girl who wants someone to care about her. The acting in this scene was incredible and even though there was a lot going on in it through the majority of the scene it felt like Marcia and Emily were the only two there. Emily didn’t have a single line in this moment, but her acting was flawless as she brought to life the terror Ariel was experiencing. She had her mouth being held open and a tube slightly in her mouth while having to act this terrifying and emotional moment. In reality, it probably wasn’t an easy situation to act either given all that was happening around her and to her. Yet through all of this, her eyes found Marcia’s and that connection just made the scene all the more impactful. Marcia had to juggle Leanne’s doctor mentality and her motherly instincts while also remaining connected to Emily the whole time. She perfectly supported Emily’s performance while also delivering a stunning one herself. This was a picture perfect example of scene partners working together in perfect unison. This wasn’t just an emotional and poignant scene, but it was acting at its finest. Should the series pull off another miraculous renewal I hope that Emily remains a part of the show because she and Marcia have a phenomenal connection that really sells the mother/daughter bond between their characters.
Rachel Wong: Leanne volunteers to try the vaccine that could potentially stop the pandemic, but could also potentially kill her (since it failed on the animal trials). Leanne feels that she has nothing to lose, since she “doesn’t belong to anyone” and that “there’s no one waiting at home” for her. Jesse, heartbroken by Leanne’s admission, tells Leanne that she belongs to him. “Tu eres mi familia.” Cue the ugly tears.

COLONY, "Company Man", February 9, 2017, The Scene: Opening Sequence with the Drone
Darth Locke:
Colony has its ups and downs, but overall I feel the second season is still much better than the first and it's in part thanks to scenes like this. To see the uneasiness of the resistance attempt to capture the large bug-like drone and then able to follow its course, as they were able to strap a camera to its back, which leads them to complete darkness inside the wall, as it hovers and moves with many other drones is a testament to good CGI, using visuals to convey something ominous and intense, while also reminding viewers of Colony's actual title, since the drones in this sequence behave like a colony of insects inside a dark hive!

DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, "Turncoat", February 7, 2017, Actors: Dominic Purcell, Randall Batinkoff, The Scene: Rory and George Washington team up
Milo:
Rory and George Washington team up to escape the British before Washington can be hung.

GREY'S ANATOMY, "None of Your Business", February 9, 2017, Actors: Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson
The Scene: Meredith confronts Bailey
Saloni:
Meredith confronting Bailey about refusing Minnick into her OR and then getting suspended. Totally on Mer's side in this case, though.

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, "Go Cry Somewhere Else", February 9, 2017, Actors: Aja Naomi King, Karla Souza, The Scenes: Laurel breaks down at Wes' funeral & Michaela takes care of Laurel
Luana Arturi:
Michaela takes care of Laurel. It was so sweet how Michaela made sure Laurel was ok, and without losing her usual sass. Aja Naomi King has suddenly turned into one of my favorite things on this show. Michaela started as an annoying brat and turned into the kick-ass force of nature willing and able to take care of the whole group, usually better than Annalise ever could. I'm looking forward to Annalise getting her mojo back, but in the meantime I have no problem with Michaela being her substitute.
Saloni: Laurel losing it at Wes' funeral and yelling at all the attendees.
Laura Markus: Laurel breaks down at Wes' funeral.

IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA, "Hero or Hate Crime?", February 8, 2017, Actor: Rob McElhenney, The Scene: Mac comes out over a $14 scratch ticket (picked by Laura Markus)

LEGION, "Chapter 1", February 8, 2017, Actors: Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller and more, The Scenes: The Escape Sequence & The Window Kiss
Kollin Lore:
The Window Kiss. This is the scene of the week. I'm going to quote SpoilerTV Legion reviewer Nirat here as he succinctly describes the brilliance and sheer emotion of this very poignant scene: "Rachel Keller's voice is so gentle and soft as she tells David what to do, to let the hospital disappear in the reflection and become free whilst still being trapped was gorgeous. The lighting on their faces moving from a soft blue to red as they lean in for a reflected kiss was stunning. That is before the memory becomes disrupted by a man questioning David. It was so beautifully poetic and romantic with a lot of depth. They want to be normal to some degree and this scene allowed them to and Noah’s direction really made such a difference."
Milo: I could pretty much choose the whole episode as it was amazing but I'm going to go with David's escape from the swimming pool with with help from Syd.
Babar: Syd and the other mutants help David escape the government facility.
Darth Locke: Final Scene - Whole Escape Sequence. Wow, just what a great premiere! I had a feeling that this could be one of my new favorite shows. I always felt that X-Men lent itself to something more psychological than other Comic Book Superheroes and Legion is just the right kind of cerebral escape, but yet still tethered to things X-Men-ish to satisfy my needs. I was impressed by how Hawley could execute his story, in which I didn't find myself too lost, but this final scene with Syd being able to connect to David's conscious, while in a memory, and then seeing the whole team help David escape the facility, fight off against military-like foes, and finish off by meeting a Hitchcockian-looking character reminiscent to a female version of Professor X (Melanie Bird) at the shoreline, was exciting and marvelous! I had to choose it!
Justin Valdes: David breaking out with the help of Sydney.

MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD, "BOOM", February 7, 2017, Actors: Parminder Nagra and more
The Scene: Nadeer's death
Tyler:
Nadeer gets blown up. To keep this short and sweet, I HATED that woman and I'm glad that she's dead. She deserved it. Despite it being no-where near as climatic as I was anticipating, she had it coming.

RIVERDALE, "Chapter Three: Body Double", February 9, 2017, Actors: Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes and more, The Scene: Betty shows her "dark side"
Samantha Benjamin:
It was a cracker of a scene for many reasons but I really like this slow burner they're doing with Betty. Her mum forces her to be the perfect person due to what's happened to Polly, but push her hard enough & the cracks start to show which is something I'd like to see explored more broadly in the future. I also like that Betty & Veronica have only been friends for a few weeks, but Veronica is still able to stop Betty from going too far & I really love their friendship. Also picked by Justin Valdes
Francesco: Betty can't control herself and attacks Chuck.

SUPERGIRL, "The Martian Chronicles", February 6, 2017, Actors: Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood, Sharon Leal, The Scenes: The Birthday Cupcake scene & M'gann tells J'onn he's changed her
Aimee Hicks: Alex reassures Kara that she’s never going to leave her. This entire episode dealt with Kara and Alex both having to learn how to juggle sister time despite other things and people in their lives pulling them in opposite directions. What matters is that no matter what these two sisters will always be there for each other. Despite really wanting to go to the concert with Maggie, in the end, she chose her sister, not because she was obligated to do so but because she really wanted to. Earlier in the episode, she made it clear that she hated disappointing Kara. She loves Maggie, with all of her heart, but Kara will always mean the world to Alex. Bottom line is their relationship is the heart of the show and no matter what pairings these two end up in that fact won’t change. Alex knows when something is wrong with her little sister and she made sure that Kara knew that no matter what she was never going to abandon her. Nothing can pull these two apart and no matter what happens they will always be there for each other. This was yet another example of the incredible performances Chyler and Melissa put out together. Individually they are the best of the best, but together they are unstoppable.
Donna Cromeans: The heart of this show has, and always will be the relationship of the Danvers sisters, Kara and Alex. This week's episode The Martian Chronicles gave us several great examples including another epic duel. However, the standout scene for me this week is the final Birthday Cupcake scene. Alex skipped a concert w/Maggie to bring her sister a cupcake and quietly celebrate her Earth birthday. This simple little scene where Kara admits her fears about abandonment and Alex reassures her little sister, like other golden scenes between Benoist and Leigh is Supergirl at its best. Theirs is the best acting partnership on TV now, in my opinion.
Samantha Benjamin: M'gann tells J'onn he's changed her. It was an episode that had a lot of good scenes but this was the best. It's been really interesting to watch M'gann & J'onn's relationship progress, and I hope it's not the last we see of her.

SUPERNATURAL, "Regarding Dean", February 9, 2017, Actors: Jensen Ackles, Ruth Connell, The Scenes: Dean loses his memory & Rowena talks to Dean about her past
Justyna K:
It's been 12 (!) seasons and still, the one thing we can always count on when it comes to this series are the actors' wonderful performances. No matter the circumstances, whether it's a comedy, drama, horror or an action scene, the talented group of performers working on the show always brings their A game when it's needed. Though the writers decided to take a more fun approach with the plot, focusing on the comedic elements, instead of exploring the emotional side of the story, there was still one scene that truly captured the danger and struggle of the brothers during the hour. It's quite clear, looking at Sam throughout the episode, that the damage caused by the curse is far more painful and potentially heart-wrenching than it might initially appear. But it's the moment when Dean looks at his own reflection in the bathroom mirror and starts to lose his memory completely, desperately trying to recall his name, when it actually hits the viewers. It's a very simple scene. Not a lot of dialogue, no need for special effects, it's just one actor looking straight ahead and showing all of his character's mixed emotions in a couple of minutes. And Jensen Ackles plays that perfectly. I'm always amazed by this actor's abilities and saddened at the fact his performance has been mostly underrated over the past years. There's so much depth and pain in his acting during this quiet, yet heartbreaking scene that it ended up stealing the hour for me. Kudos to the wonderful cast & crew for their work on the show!
Kollin Lore: Dean losing his memory. As we've come to expect over Supernatural's 12 seasons in counting, Ackles can make us laugh, but he can also make us cry. 'Regarding Dean' had plenty of hilarious moments from the older Winchester brother, but it was his more dramatic moment, as we see him slowly losing his memory whilst staring at himself in the mirror, that takes the cake. This was a very simple, yet heartbreaking scene and brilliantly performed by Ackles.
Klutzy girl: Rowena confesses to Dean (who won't remember) that she's done horrible things and told herself it was fine but she doesn't know how there can be any hope left for her when even God and his sister were fighting. It was an excellent insight into Rowena's head, and I can't believe how fast I went from loathing her to loving her. Hopefully Dean *does* remember and this will be brought up again at some point.

THE 100, "Heavy Lies the Crown", February 8, 2017, Actors: Eliza Taylor and more
The Scene: Clarke's Speech
Tyler:
I feel as if this speech was a turning point in the series. Clarke has put herself in the same position as Jaha had himself in Season 1. I love a good parallel and this current storyline is doing it perfectly. Let's just hope that Clarke has a better outcome than Jaha had.

THE BLACKLIST, "Isabella Stone", February 9, 2017, Actors: James Spader, Hisham Tawfiq
The Scene: Dembe warns Red
Geo N:
Dembe warns Red about the increasing dangers Red continues to put himself in. This scene is great because it explains what is fundamentally going on with Red lately. He has been only focused on keeping Liz and Agnes safe at the expense of everything and everyone else around him.

THE GOLDBERGS, "Agassi", February 8, 2017, Actors: Troy Gentile and more
The Scene: Barry loses his mind on the tennis court
Samantha Benjamin:
I tend to enjoy Barry more when he's the supporting role in storylines, compared to when he's leading. This wasn't necessarily the funniest scene of the episode, but it's the one that sticks with me.

THE MAGICIANS, "Divine Elimination", February 8, 2017, Actors: Olivia Taylor Dudley, Charles Mesure
The Scene: Alice's battle with The Beast
Milo:
Alice's battle with The Beast and her death that followed was excellent, as her character got a great send-off in this episode.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, "What Are You?", February 10, 2017, Actors: Ian Somerhalder, Kat Graham, Matt Davis and more, The Scenes: The final scene with Damon and Alaric & Bonnie and Abby burn Enzo's body
Saloni:
The final scene with Damon and Alaric. I need my wonderful Dalaric friendship back before the show ends. HM: Bonnie and Damon's phone call in the beginning.
Francesco: Bonnie and Abby burn Enzo's body.

THIS IS US, "I Call Marriage", February 7, 2017, Actors: Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Justin Hartley and more, The Scenes: Ben tells Rebecca about the tour & Kevin comforts Sophie on the train & Jack and Rebecca retell their vows
Luana Arturi:
Ben tells Rebecca about the tour. I loved how Rebecca defended Jack saying he's a freaking superhero (because he is). Any other show would have turned this into a moment where she feels misunderstood by her husband and seeks comfort in another man, but here we see just how strong they are, even if we know there are still some bumps on the road ahead.
Tyler: Kevin comforts Sophie on the train. I haven't really cared that much about Kevin's love life but after learning more about Sophie this week, I really like her. That conversation on the train was so sweet and after it, I found myself rooting for her.
Justin Valdes: Jack and Rebecca retell their vows in their first apartment.

TRAINING DAY, "Tehrangeles", February 9, 2017, Actors: Bill Paxton, Tehmina Sunny, The Scene: The final phone call between Frank and Lina
Donna Cromeans:
The phone call between Frank and Lina, the assassin. It was a great twist to have a simple throw-away moment of Lina taking Frank's gun during the botched ransom exchange and turn it into cliff-hanger type moment by having her tell Frank she used his gun to kill two men as a way of keeping him from pursuing her. I don't think we've seen the last of her!
