How to Get Away With Murder - Season 3 Finale - Post Mortem Interviews

Annalise called Wes "my son" when she broke down in her AA meeting. What does that mean for her going forward?

It's very hopeful, that moment, for Annalise — at least the way I see it — because she's acknowledging her pain. That's probably the first step. It's so vulnerable in a group of strangers to say something that she could never even say to herself. I don't even want to say that much about the moment because I think Viola's performance speaks volumes better than anything I could ever say about it, but I do think it shows that she wants to get better and I think that's very courageous.

How is Connor going to cope after his guilt over Wes' death, then his kidnapping, and now a proposal?

I don't know if Oliver's timing was the best but I think that's how these people live. They're just trying to survive. Connor, I think it's smart when he didn't answer Oliver right in that moment. I think he needs time to process things and I think he's really grown up. He's so distrustful and he knows that about himself, but I think the last two episodes really showed him trying to do the right thing and it didn't work out the way he wanted it to. I'm exited because I feel all the characters are growing up. Even Michaela saying "I love you" to Asher is her growing up in a way. I think they've had to grow up really fast, and I think that's what this finale really was about for me — growing up for the better and the worse.

Toward the end of the finale, Laurel was convinced the Mahoneys killed Wes — and was just about to confront Charles Mahoney (Wilson Bethel), aka Wes' actual biological father, with a gun. But Souza told THR she didn't think Laurel was planning on actually firing the weapon.

"She would have probably used it to confront him and to get him to tell her the truth. She's desperate to hear the truth just to sort of lay it to rest," Souza explained. "She wasn't able to say goodbye to Wes' body because it was cremated so she just wants to know exactly what happened. And that that's one of the very clear signs of when someone's going through grief. In that moment adrenaline is pumping, and even though she has a plan and it's just to confront him, anything could've gone wrong and she could've pulled the trigger. It was a very emotionally charged moment. She was determined to get the truth out of this guy whatever way possible."

When did you know who the killer was?

Very early on in the series, whenever we mention Laurel’s father, I knew I eventually wanted to investigate her family and who her father was and how bad of a man he is, so it was definitely a possibility in my head that he was behind it, but there were a lot of possibilities in my head. I always have options and it was just really about what felt the most exciting to explore for next year — I like surprising, but I like knowing where it’s going more. I really like what this says about Laurel.

Why Laurel’s dad? Why did he want Wes dead?

That is a very good question. It’s not an answer I can give you without spoiling anything. I’ll just say it’s very complicated and it involves DA Denver and it involves Dominic. What I love about the last moments of Laurel in the show was that you can really see her brain working through a lot of things and wondering if this is a coincidence — she’s definitely putting the pieces together. I’m excited to see how Laurel reacts.

Where will next season pick up? This feels like the first time you’ve ended a season without a murder, so what does that mean for next year’s storyline?

Quite honestly, this is when we take a step back, breathe, and decide what we want to do. I have no idea basically, because I might decide we skip forward in time or I might decide we start with a murder. Obviously there are tons of bodies piling up, but I really didn’t want to do the same thing again this year in terms of just having another dead body. I don’t know, honestly. It’s kind of exciting.

What can you tease of the relationship Laurel and Dominic have?

When we auditioned, we played with a bunch of things with Nicholas, so there were options for us to be friends from diaper years, and then there’s others where we did have something romantic, and then there were others where he maybe just wanted something and I never did. That was interesting because then we filmed the scene that night, it’s almost like it had a bit of everything, so it leaves it open for the audience to take what they want.
