Fresh off the Boat - Sisters without Subtext - Review: Where did the subtext go

From all the guest stars introduced in two and a half seasons, Jessica's sister Connie is certainly my favorite. Susan Park is killing it with every appearance and brings out the worst but funniest out of Jessica.

Connie came to Orlando to visit college campuses cause she had the sudden change of mind to get a college degree. Surprisingly to Connie, Jessica was very supportive of the idea and even offered to accompany Connie to a college tour. Connie's face, when she saw Jessica was truthful and supportive, was pure gold. Not to mention the car scene with the two sisters singing and bonding over, so reviving. But as usual, the story took a quick turn when Jessica realized Connie wanted to go to Art school. The reemerging of the subtext was amazing as the sisterly snark was better and sharper than ever.

The story brought out a complexity in Jessica's character that is often forgotten because of the quick pace and comedic side of the story, her perfectionism and sense to alway do the right thing cost her, her own artistic passion. Jessica is a standout person with a lot of heart under a very thick shell. The character development underneath this quirky story was impressive as Constance Wu proved her brilliance once more. Jessica appearing on campus with the radio was simply amazing and heartwarming. I really hope this means we'll get more of Connie in season 4.

The side story featuring Marvin, Honey and the kids was just as funny as the main story. The whole scenery was a perfect set up as it used the kids in a hilarious fashion and gave some long-overdue focus to Marvin and Honey, especially Honey. Exploiting the kid's kinks to play out in the Nursing home was truly hilarious. Honey crashing of the treadmill and injuring her hip was the cherry on top. Hoping for much more Honey and Marvin in future outings.

I would rather you to be a drug addict.

I loved the opening pun with Louis rearranging the pantry. Evan was truly hilarious while mimicking Louis kissing Jessica's but.

Another really great episode of Fresh of the Boat in an amazing third season. Week after week I look forward to the new Huang adventures. What did you think of the episode? Feel free to sound off in the comment section.
