Code Black - Vertigo - Review

Code Black is literally where rules (and my sanity) go to die.

This week’s cases include brothers trapped forty stories above ground, a case of suspected spousal abuse and a school prank gone horribly wrong.

Case #1:
If you’re afraid of heights, this case will have you shaking at the knees. Two brothers, working 40 stories in the air, are pinned after a malfunction in the equipment. To make matters worse, Dr. Mario Savetti (Benjamin Hollingsworth) pulled way too many shifts. The exhaustion, combined with the high winds, nearly causes one of our beloved doctors to plummet to his death. Thanks to the quick thinking of Dr. Ethan Willis (Rob Lowe) and a safety harness, Mario is pulled back onto the some-what steady platform. Both brothers are, fortunately, brought back to solid ground and have the chance of recovering through the trauma together.

Case #2:
Not all cases are as they seem. A woman comes into the ER with bruises and a head injury. When Dr. Leanne Rorish (Marcia Gay Harden) and Dr. Noa Kean (Emily Tyra) examine her x-ray’s, they notice multiple old fractures, including one that was caused by forcibly twisting and pulling the arm. Initially, they believed that it was the husband who caused the multiple fractures. But when the father himself collapses with multiple bruises on his chest, realization hits them like a truck and they change courses. It just goes to show that you never truly know what happens behind closed doors.

Case #3:
Remember that one class you really hated in school? Or maybe the mean teacher that took your phone away or gave you surprise pop quizzes? A teen learns a lesson about compassion and forgiveness the hard way when her plan to sabotage the teacher backfires, causing mass hysteria in the classroom. “Someone” *cough cough* thought it would be a genius idea to put pepper spray in the vents. So when the heat was turned on, it caused the pepper spray to chemically react making it burn even more. Though unfortunate that it took such drastic measures for the young girl to understand that how she was acting was wrong, I’m glad she got a great pep talk from the teacher she once hated.

I sense a romance blooming between Dr. Angus Leighton (Harry Ford) and Dr. Kelly Pruitt. Though Angus isn’t as emoji-savy as Dr. Elliot Dixon (Noah Gray-Cabey), they’re going to be going on a hiking date (even though Angus doesn’t look good in shorts). Good luck, Angus!

A patient from Leanne’s past, Ariel, makes a re-appearance at Angels Memorial Hospital. No, not as a patient. She and Leanne walk off to have a private chat, leading us to wonder just what the heck is about to go down.

The next episode, titled “The Devil’s Workshop”, is part one of the two-part season finale. The promo for it looks intense, so make sure you catch the episode (and my review)!

What did you think of the episode? Why is Ariel back? How will Angus and Dr. Pruitt’s hiking date go?

‘Code Black’ airs every Wednesday on CBS at 10pm E.T.
