“You are proof that love really can conquer all.”

When we last left things, Casey was struggling with the loss of the mysterious, gun-wielding man who escaped the fire in the last episode. When things pick up this hour, all seems to be forgotten. Dawson and Casey show off their marital bliss, but the honeymoon phase soon ends when the gun-wielding man creepily approaches Gabby in the grocery store. It’s not long before the firehouse discovers that they are being targeted.

Jay Halstead takes lead on the case and the house faces a few suspicious calls that warrant his presence. Gabby and Sylvie respond to the same complex where a woman from the fire finds the landlord dead. Thanks to Halstead’s digging, Casey identifies Eddie Holmes as the gun-wielding man, and to no one’s surprise, Eddie’s a sketchy dude with a fascination with bombs. An attempt to lure Eddie into a trap seems to work, but I (and I assume you as well) wasn’t born yesterday—Eddie’s still out there. And…shocker! Eddie is, in fact, still on the loose. He lures the firehouse to a call and takes a few shots at Casey and Stella, but alas, he is unsuccessful.

Chicago Fire is at its finest when Herrmann is giving emotional speeches and Casey and Severide’s friendship is on full display. Lucky for us, this episode had both! Casey, amidst all the Eddie drama, plans the perfect moment to give the engagement ring from long ago back to Gabby. With Severide’s help, the moment ends up being perfect. Not only did we have several Casey/Severide scenes (please writers, keep those coming), but it all ended with a surprise party at Molly’s and a toast delivered by speech master Herrmann. Pardon the cheese, but it’s moments like this that show what a family this house is, and those moments are what set Chicago Fire apart (and above) the others in the franchise.

“You deserve better than I can give you.”

Thanks to the criminal element surrounding the story this episode, both Antonio and Jay are present. While Jay’s story doesn’t get into anything personal (except every time I see him on screen with Gabby I almost can’t believe they once dated), but Antonio’s sure does. He and Sylvie are still going strong…oops, methinks I spoke too soon. Sylvie offers to have Diego at the firehouse, and that is the beginning of the end. Antonio’s ex, Laura, shows up, and she’s not at all pleased at her ex’s new leading lady. I absolutely hate what the writers have done to Laura—she started out as a completely different person in the early episodes of PD. But that’s not the point here. The point, that we all knew was inevitable, was that Antonio and Sylvie are not endgame. Surprisingly, I didn’t hate this pairing. But, I still stand by my opinions on cross-show romances. It makes sense to end things now, because Antonio is launching a new show (Chicago Justice) in less than a month.

So, thoughts? Not to take anything away from the performances by Jon Seda and Kara Kilmer (they are both amazing), but I didn’t feel much during their breakup because we all knew it was coming. Antonio needs to be free as the new show launches and call me crazy, but I still think Sylvie and Severide will have something before all is said and done (however far down the line it might be).

“Is he a cheerleader? No. But would any of us follow him anywhere? Damn right we would.”

Speaking of Severide…Dennis Mack, a Chief in Springfield and old friend of Benny’s, shadows Severide and Squad during the episode. He takes a particular interest in how Severide leads, and it’s pretty obvious there’s something he’s not telling Squad. In the end, Dennis offers Severide a Battalion Chief position in Springfield—the city Anna happens to live in. Will he take it? Seeing as how he’s one of the leads on the show I would bet not, but nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how this story unfolds. I didn’t catch before that Anna is a nurse or doctor (she works in a hospital)—might a transfer to Chicago Med be in her future?

What did you think of the episode? Is there finally smooth sailing ahead for Casey and Dawson? What’s next for Severide? Sylvie? Share your thoughts below!
