A.P.B. is fast paced, exciting and a really fun ride of television. In today's TV world where a show gets a label even before its aired A.P.B. tries to defy the odds and deliver something new. Something challenging. Something emotionally gripping but still action packed enough that it will keep your eyes plastered to the screen. So let's dig into what happened in tonight's series premiere of A.P.B.
The premiere is mostly forefront with a strong performance by Justin Kirk who truly knocked it out of the park. His arrogance, snark and slight social awkwardness highlighted by his compassion created a complex character who I look forward getting to know and explore in further outings. I was glad the pilot concluded the investigation on Sully's murder was concluded in the episode and gave Gideon's emotional journey a complete cycle. To my personal surprise the female lead Theresa Murphy, played by Natalie Martinez was quite impressive and left a positive impression on me. She is smart, confident but knows the streets and was initially reluctant towards Gideon and his way. The interactions between Gideon and Theresa were on point and gave the show more substance as both of them opened to each other's ways and established a solid foundation for the show to build upon.
The show did a good job in bringing up the "Can money buy justice?" issue as Theresa threw it right into Gideon's face, creating an inner turmoil for Gideon and throwing a couple of doubt seeds in his intentions. The doubt rose even higher after an eager rookie cop got shot in the process of trying to catch Sully's murder. With Theresa's help they eventually caught the murder and I love how the writers played with the taser guns and showing off Theresa's quick and smart thinking.
Also, the precinct's reluctance towards the app and the new gear was well executed but could've been more developed. Still, I won't be too critical towards it as it was a pilot and as we all know pilots are quite busy and the issues will certainly be brought up again down the line.
As for the rest of the rest of the main cast, they didn't get too much focus but Ernie Hudson's Ned Conrad was quite sweet as he did a fine jop portraying his skepticism and later opening towards Gideon's equipment. The officer duo, Tasha Goss (Tamberla Perry) and Nicholas Brandt (Taylor Handley) have great chemistry, shared some nice mini rants and did some great action sequences while capturing a man who beat his wife. Nicholas combat with the offender was executed well and I didn't expect him throwing himself and the offender through the window. Nice one.
Favorite Line:
Nicholas: Do the bad guys get toys as well?
The episode ended with whole Chicago going crazy for the APB app and if you neglect the first couple of minutes I'm quite crazy about the show as well. Did the series premiere impress you or did it fall flat comparing to your expectations? Feel free to sound off in the comment section below and as always take part in our What did you think of Poll? Till next week I hope.
