Supergirl is back and we jump right into the action with some bad guys firing missiles at our heroine. Seriously a few missiles won’t stop the girl of steel who flips the van but two of the villain’s escape, Guardian blocks their path and as one goes towards his ‘man in the van’ sidekick, Winn he asks him to help. However, the consequences were nearly deadly and James shows up just in time. I did wonder where Supergirl was, though!
Kara is in a slight funk as Supergirl all she seems to be doing is stopping thieves of late. Alex, however, is on cloud nine as her romance with Maggie Sawyer seems to be going well.
In fact the following morning we can tell how well for once Alex doesn’t put work first and even suggests ringing in sick after all isn’t black lung is very serious, the black lung dialogue was an ad lib by Chyler which they left in.
At Catco James is not content with running the company but also bragging in a story about Guardian much to Kara’s annoyance, she still doesn’t know James is the vigilante.
Snapper just wants his coffee and danish but forces are against him when a woman arrives begging for help to find her missing daughter, Snapper thinks it is just another cliché a teenage runaway. Kara wants to find and her and promises the mother much to Snapper’s disdain.
At the alien bar, they really need to give it a name!, Mon – El seems to have found a new job and Kara gets some background about her missing girl from Detective Sawyer. Maggie tells Kara there has been a spike in missing persons and they seem very random.
A young man appears to be with a doctor but this isn’t your average doctor he gets his goons to throw the young man through some sort of device. All is not what it seems as the doctor is an alien in disguise, his backer looks very familiar too, none other than Veronica Sinclair known as Roulette.
Kara see’s Winn hiding his black eye behind sunglasses and accepts he got mugged but gets distracted when Alex seems to be giving the other Sunny Danvers a run for her money. She offers to help Kara with her missing person case but Kara says she is ok.
I loved the little sister moment here as Alex clearly is enjoying her new romance and Kara is so happy for her.
Kara is about to go looking for her missing girl and Mon- El turns up, after one day he takes time off and wants to help, I think it’s an excuse to hang around Kara.
Kara has a lead so with Mon-El she comes to the missing girl Izzy Williams last location, a testing Centre. Yes, it’s the place and the creepy alien in disguise doc from earlier, of course, the goons do not over power Mon-El and Kara but he steps into the device which appears to be a portal of some kind. Kara changes into her Supergirl outfit and tells Mon- El to fetch Alex as she gives chase believing the Alien knows where Izzy is. Unfortunately, the ‘Stargate', leads Kara to a red sun planet and so she has no powers as she soon finds out after punching a guard, Mon-El comes to help and they both get stranded. Kara isn’t happy no one knows where they are and they have no powers.
Kara is all for looking for Izzy and the other missing person’s but Mon- El just wants to try and get the portal open and head back.
Back on earth and Winn is overcome with the concern showed by James yes that is sarcasm, James really didn’t come across well in this episode, in fact, this season James has become my least favorite character. Alex interrupts worried as she can’t get hold of Kara.
On the other plant, Mon -El seems to have walked into a trap, some sort of snare trap and he can't move, they soon end up being captured by an Alien.
Alex tracks down Kara’s last location and J’onn recognizes the device, Winn gets all excited about the discovery of the Stargate.
The Alien who has them trapped doesn’t eat their kind much to Mon- El’s relief who recognized the species he does, however, give them information regarding the missing girl, they soon learn they are on the plant Maldora, slaver’s Moon as it is known by the locals.
They head to the fortress, well give themselves up for capture the look Mon-El gives Kara as they walk in is priceless.
Even without powers Supergirl seems to inspire the captive humans to escape before she can do that she learns the mastermind behind this is none other than her old nemesis roulette. We also seem to have a Dominator visiting who has purchased the humans! Kara had enough of these guys in the crossover. The missing girl Izzy is among the captives (played by none other than Kevin Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith).
Meanwhile on Earth they realize the portals trajectory, Alex becomes panicked and unfortunately for Maggie, she chooses that moment to visit. Alex blames herself for Supergirl going missing and tells Maggie it was a mistake and she should go. I know a lot of people did not agree with this scene but I see it as Kara has been her main focus for so long it was natural for her to blame herself because she was focused on her own happiness. It was Alex saying I can’t be happy, bad things happen when I lose focus. Kara wouldn’t be happy with her though
To make matters worse knowing J’onn can’t help either as the air is toxic to Martians makes it a tougher situation. Alex tells Winn to man up as the head back to the portal as she needs him to dial them back home once on the other side.
Kara gives her inspirational speech to Mon - El and stands up for herself causing the other captives to fight to escape. Trapping Roulette and her minions in her own prison they escape the prison but need to get out the fortress.
Alex arrives and tracking Kara’s ear piece heads to find her and Winn refuses to be the red shirt (Star Trek reference)
Upon entering the fortress Alex starts firing and finds a handy new gun as she continues the search for her sister.
Mon- El seems to be battling well but when he loses his weapon the Dominator tells the other alien not to shoot him and bows…. Who is Mon- El …Royalty ? maybe !
Of course, they run into Alex who’s is so relieved to see her sister and they hug.
Poor Winn who really does not want to be the red shirt ( for those who aren’t in the know the red shirt in Star Trek always gets killed) and fights back when he gets thumped by an Alien guard. He also gets the portal working again as the others arrive, their new alien friend comes along for the ride too. Alex has brought a little bit of sunshine for Kara so she now has powers to help them escape the aliens.
Once through Supergirl destroys the keypad of the gate.
Supergirl is back and Kara returns the girl to her mother so it all ends happily. While giving Snapper the story she tells him she will always follow her heart for the story. Snapper seems to warm to her as she leaves.
Winn is all happy now he has his confidence back so Guardian and man in the van are back. I still feel he should have been harder on James though these to playing hero could get messy.
Alex apologizes to Maggie saying she lost her head and Maggie it seems is a good detective as she knows Kara is Supergirl. Despite this though Maggie says that’s her one chance to blow her off, I think she understands as it was Alex’s sister but Alex needs to live her own life.
Mon - El arrives at Kara’s apartment with some news, he wants to be a hero, the very cute scene with them both under the blanket made me smile and the chemistry with these two works very well.
However remember the masked aliens from the end of 208 they turn up on Slavers moon looking for Mon-El and when they find out he is gone the kill the messenger but not before he tells them he is on Earth. I believe Mon- El’s past will cause a lot of trouble in the future.
This episode was a welcome return after the break and directed superbly by Kevin Smith, the sisters are the core and though brief we had a few wonderful moments between the siblings. Who else though can’t wait for Kara to have the shovel talk with Maggie. I am also happy they didn’t dumb Maggie down she is a good detective so it was easy for her to see through the glasses and Alex getting all upset over Supergirl going missing confirmed it. I liked how Winn came back after his attack but it shows how cocky these two have become no one is invincible and they certainly are not made of steel and am wondering if James is in for a nasty fall in the future. Kara is still unaware he is the vigilante and I foresee this having an effect on their friendship. As for Mon-El time will tell but I think most fans already suspect who he really is.
So what are your thoughts on this episode
How do you see Kara’s training of Mon -El going?
Who do you believe Mon-El is?
Will Maggie and Alex overcome the pressures of work and be happy?
Next week it gets electrifying with the return of Livewire.
