10th July 2017 - Elizabeth Ludlow Joins Cast

Elizabeth Ludlow, who plays Arat, a member of the Negan-led The Saviors on AMC’s The Walking Dead, has joined Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, the upcoming sequel from the Warner Bros/Legendary monster cinematic universe. Michael Dougherty is directing the pic, which he co-wrote with Zach Shield.

19th June 2017 - Production Begins

Following the global success of 2014's GODZILLA and this year's "Kong: Skull Island," comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

The film, which begins principal photography today, is being directed by Michael Dougherty ("Krampus"), and stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air," "The Conjuring" films), and Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai") and Sally Hawkins ("Blue Jasmine"), both reprising their "Godzilla" roles; Kyle Chandler ("The Wolf of Wall Street," "Manchester by the Sea"); Millie Bobby Brown ("Stranger Things") in her feature film debut; Bradley Whitford ("Get Out"); Thomas Middleditch (HBO's "Silicon Valley"); Charles Dance (HBO's "Game of Thrones"); O'Shea Jackson Jr. ("Straight Outta Compton"); Aisha Hinds ("Star Trek Into Darkness"); and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi ("Memoirs of a Geisha," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon").

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species-thought to be mere myths-rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance.

Dougherty directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull, with Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers and Alexandra Mendes co-producing for Legendary.

Behind the scenes, Dougherty's creative team includes director of photography Lawrence Sher, whose past credits include "War Dogs" and "Godzilla," for which he handled additional photography; production designer Scott Chambliss ("Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," "Star Trek Into Darkness"); editor Roger Barton ("Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," the "Transformers" films); costume designer Louise Migenbach (the "X-Men" and "Hangover" films); and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron ("Godzilla," "Ghost in the Shell," and part of the Oscar-winning team behind "Life of Pi ").

Filming is taking place mainly in Atlanta, Georgia. A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film is currently scheduled for release in March 2019, and will be distributed in 3D and 2D and in select IMAX theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd.

Zhang Ziyi has been tapped to join Legendary and Warner Bros’ sequel Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, with the companies saying today the actress will also play a major role in their monster movie franchise.

18th May 2017 - Sally Hawkins Returning & Charles Dance Joins Cast

Sally Hawkins is returning to the monster-verse.

The Oscar-nominated actress will reprise her role of a creature-tracking scientist for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Legendary and Warner Bros.s sequel to its 2014 movie.

While plot details are being kept on a faraway atoll, the story has a family - played by Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown - at its core.

1st May 2017 - Anthony Ramos Joins Cast

Anthony Ramos has been cast in Legendary/Warner Bros’ upcoming monster sequel Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, joining Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Ken Watanabe, O’Shea Jackson Jr, and Aisha Hinds. Michael Dougherty is directing from a script he co-wrote with Zach Shields.

Ramos will play Cpl. Mendoza, who keeps calm and cool on the surface but whose bravery isn’t to be underestimated in battle.

Vera Farmiga will play the onscreen mother of Millie Bobby Brown in the Godzilla sequel, with daddy duty having gone to Kyle Chandler.

Plot details are being kept secret but Chandler, who has already starred in creature features Super 8 and King Kong, is the hero of the piece, playing a scientist.

It’s a Netflix reunion of sorts: Kyle Chandler, star of “Bloodline,” is set to join “Stranger Things” break-out Millie Bobby Brown in Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” sources tell Variety.

Chandler will play Brown’s father in the Legendary sequel.

23rd January 2017 - Michael Dougherty to Direct

After first being hired to run the “Godzilla” universe writing room, “Krampus” director Michael Dougherty has now been tapped to direct the next installment in the monster movie franchise as well.

When news first broke that Dougherty and his “Krampus” co-writer Zach Shields would be penning the sequel, reports surfaced that Dougherty would also helm the pic, but insiders said then that the deal was only to write the sequel, not direct. After months of work in the writers room, Legendary eventually extended an offer for him to direct as well.

Alex Garcia will oversee the project for Legendary.

“Godzilla 2” is currently dated for Mar. 22, 2019, with “Godzilla vs. Kong” set for May 29, 2020.

14th December 2016 - Title Revealed

Legendary has revealed the official titles for both the Godzilla sequel and the Pacific Rim sequel in a fairly innocuous press release about the hiring of production execs. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be the name of the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 hit, which will be helmed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus) and is currently scheduled for release on March 22, 2019. Godzilla, King of the Monsters! was the title of the 1956 American release version of the original 1954 Japanese Godzilla film, which featured footage of Raymond Burr added in to Americanize the film.

10th May 2016 - Film Delayed Until 2019

Godzilla fans will have to wait a little longer to see the long-awaited sequel to Gareth Edwards' 2014 hit monster movie.

Warner Bros. has pushed back Godzilla 2 from June 8, 2018, to a new date of March 22, 2019. The studio also has earmarked May 29, 2020, for the sure-to-be epic Godzilla vs. Kong.

Burbank, CA – October 14, 2015 – Following Legendary’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2014 success with the global reinvention of the Godzilla franchise, the companies have come together to create an epic, new shared cinematic franchise. All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases.

The announcement that the reinvention of monsters continues was made today by Legendary CEO, Thomas Tull and Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. The initial trio of films are 2017’s KONG: SKULL ISLAND, GODZILLA 2 in 2018 and then GODZILLA VS. KONG, arriving in theaters in 2020. While Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the GODZILLA films remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute KONG as a part of this franchise. Production on KONG: SKULL ISLAND begins October 19th.

Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla in May 2014 with an agreement to release Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018. Both films feature the human Monarch organization. Shortly following Legendary’s pact with NBC Universal, Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho’s Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. This paved the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures.

When Legendary announced films centered on Godzilla and Kong, fans all over the world speculated these two characters might one day meet in the same film. Classic Toho monsters including King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, as announced at Comic-Con 2014, may also join the Legendary pantheon of giant monster mayhem going forward.

“Audiences really responded to Godzilla,” stated Tull. “Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”

18th September 2014 - Max Borenstein to Write Script

Legendary Pictures has closed a deal for Max Borenstein to write the screenplay for the sequel to Godzilla, which Gareth Edwards will direct. It is the latest example of how Borenstein is becoming a go-to guy for Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni’s event-film factory. Borenstein wrote the first installment that relaunched the reptile and also penned Skull Island. The latter was teased at Comic-Con and just got Tom Hiddleston starring and Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing. Borenstein also scripted the upcoming Seventh Son for Legendary.

14th August 2014 - Release Date Revealed + Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah Teased

Legendary and Warner Bros. have dropped some monster-sized news this morning: Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla sequel has a release date! The King of Monsters will be back on the big screen June 8, 2018 and, according to Legendary’s recent Comic-Con panel, he’ll be bringing a few friends. (Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah were all listed in the teaser trailer presented during the panel as potential future foes).

18th May 2014 - Sequel in Development

After opening to $103M internationally — the biggest opening of 2014 so far — and grossing $93M domestic stateside this weekend, it should come as no surprise that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.‘ are already developing a sequel to the monster hit. It was confirmed to Deadline this morning that a Godzilla sequel is underway. The beast is currently stomping across international markets to take No. 1 spots in most territories.
