Lucifer - Love Handles - Review: "I see you found my love handles"

Can there possibly be anything more embarrassing than waking up from a seriously hardcore sex dream to find your roommate watching with popcorn? I was all set to be annoyed by the chain-yank of a teaser (I mean we all knew that wasn’t really happening didn’t we?), but then Maze was sitting there, with popcorn, watching Chloe sleep. I thought for a moment that Maze had a way of seeing into Chloe’s dream. If she could she might have had some booze in addition to the popcorn.

In the wake of the kiss, Chloe seems to have lost her mind and Lucifer is filled with doubt. Lucifer can’t believe that Chloe’s feelings are real…and hers. I’m not quite sure I ever really understood what was going on with Chloe at the beginning of the ep. But the sight of Lucifer surrounded by a bevy of hot, drunk college students snaps her out of it.

Her first reaction seems to be to think “I knew I was wrong.” But alas, dear Chloe, Lucifer is doing what many women wish their men would do---ask women for their take on a romantic situation.

My first thought was that the poor Devil wasn’t going to get too much help from these fairly young inexperienced women whose information is based more on movies and romantic novels than life. But then that wasn’t really the important thing about that scene. It was Chloe realizing that Lucifer was in a room full of hot college girls thinking and talking about her

The case this week did involve the poison we saw delivered last week, but it was not used the way I expected them to use it. Instead of a city wide biological threat we got a crazy professor using the poison to conduct experiments on specific people.

He is poisoning innocent college students in an effort to prove that successful people (a celebrated actor and a thoracic surgeon) would let the kids die rather than destroy their careers. For both of these professionals, it’s a difficult decision.

The actor takes so long to decide that the kid dies. But he did show up, seemingly willing to do it. The doctor, struggled with the question, but upon hearing that a potential antidote wasn’t working, she did it.

The killer went to all of this trouble because he made the wrong decision and lost his career because of it. He’s out to prove to the world that he’s not the only person who would have chosen their life’s work over an innocent life.

The problem is he’s trying to compare a computer (which could have been restored if he’d backed the freaking thing up. I mean really, it’s the 21st century. Shoot, I was backing up my important files on disk before they were selling backup software to the home market! All this nutbag proved was that he’s a murderous nutbag who chose to kill innocent people to prove a point that didn’t hold up.

Maze actually helped Chloe and Lucifer catch up with the crazy professor. She suggested that Chloe needed to throw caution to the wind once in a while. So, when Lucifer suggested they “poke the bear” in order to get Professor Carlisle to show himself, Chloe agreed. Her scathing email did, indeed, prompt the Professor to find them, but he has one last experiment to conduct.

He fills his lab with poisonous gas and leaves two boys trapped in a sealed area. He wanted Chloe to decide if she would die to save the boys.

Lucifer, knowing that if Chloe wasn’t there he could walk through the poison unscathed, sends her after the professor while he saves the boys. I loved his method of determining if Chloe was far enough away. Chloe’s reaction to finding Lucifer alive finally pushes Lucifer to believe she really does care for him.

Charlotte goes to Linda to try and convince her to tell Lucifer that God seems to have made Chloe especially for Lucifer. Linda isn’t an idiot. Linda refuses to bite. Not even Maze wants to take her up on the offer. The best Charlotte can do is get Maze to help her make the reveal to Lucifer.

Maze goes along with Charlotte until she sees how happy Lucifer is. Maze’s first instinct is to protect Lucifer. We’ve spent so much time, this season, with Maze building her own life that it’s been easy to forget about her relationship with Lucifer.

I was really happy she picked him. While Maze was arguing with Charlotte about her motives, Lucifer sees a photo of Amenadiel with Chloe’s mother. It gives Charlotte the opening she’s been looking for. In a moment, Charlotte’s weapon of truth does its job. It cuts Lucifer to the core and proves his doubts were justified.

Lucifer rushes straight for Chloe. I praise him for going to talk to her directly. I’m a daytime soap junkie and the frustrating paradigm these shows frequently follow would have Lucifer heading to Heaven with Charlotte and Amenadiel without finding out the truth.

While I was screaming at the TV that Lucifer was being an idiot (because Chloe may have been to in Lucifer’s path, she’s not a puppet), I got handed an unexpected twist. Chloe has been poisoned. Now I’ve got to wait a freaking week to see what happens next!

Another terrific episode. I really am loving the way the writers are weaving the relationship between Lucifer and Chloe into the main story. It feels like it’s part of the whole story and not just a quick scene in the teaser and epilogue. Last week I was a little concerned that Charlotte came up with this great plan, but hadn’t really accomplished anything. I was happy to see her plan in action.
