FIXING THE PROBLEM – Working in publishing is not what Jane (Gina Rodriguez) thought it would be, until she learns about a showcase for up and coming writers. With Petra (Yael Grobglas) helming the Marbella, she decides to rebrand the hotel, but quickly butts heads with the rival hotel next door. Rogelio (Jaime Camil) and Darci (guest star Justina Machado) have made a new arrangement which has put a strain on his relationship with Xo (Andrea Navedo). Meanwhile, Jane and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) try to figure out the best solution to Mateo’s behavioral issues and they both seem to have different approaches.  Brett Dier and Ivonne Coll also star. DEADLINE: Why now? Jane and Michael were settling into married life, planning the expansion of their family, embarking on new careers. Why was this time chosen to shake up the happy couple?

URMAN: We came into the show, in the pilot, with Jane at a place where her life seemed (somewhat) mapped out. And a cataclysmic event happened, spinning her into a very different place, forcing change and growth. And in many ways, we’ve been dealing with the fallout of that event for two and a half seasons. Now, at the midpoint, she finally felt settled again. This felt like the moment to shake things up in a bigger way. This is a telenovela, after all.

The time jump contained a mystery about who's getting married. Why did you decide to include that?

I just wanted you to know that you're coming back to the same show. That, again, there's light – the same word I keep coming to you. That life moves on, that there's light and happiness and heart and here's Jane, she's getting ready and going to a wedding. Whose is it? People have to move on, you have to. That's part of it. I think there are so many surprises in episode 11, just in terms of where everybody is. I think it's going to be really fun, really surprising and kind of breathes new life…. It's a breath of fresh air into the show in my opinion because it just puts characters in a totally different places and we've been so pain-staking about tracking everyone's emotional journeys. For me, the benefit of the death is that you really get inside the characters and you really feel as they're growing and changing. … The three-year jump really allows a lot of a changes to have already happened and we can flash-back to moments of importance, but it allows characters to really be in new and different places and have new and evolved relationships with one another which I found really exciting and I know we all felt excited by it in the writer's room.

You mentioned Rogelio, and we know that he and Michael had this epic bromance. What can you tease about how he’s dealing with this loss?

We’re going to touch on what his grieving was like and how much he misses his best friend. Certainly, when Jane does start to date again, it’s going to be hard for her and hard for her dad.

You mentioned milestones you want to hit with Jane. How far ahead have you planned those?

Well, I’ve planned to the end of the story we want to tell. I can’t tell you where it ends, but we definitely are on a journey towards that.
