Fresh off The Boat - How To Be An American: A Jessica Huang Love Story

Hello dear Fresh off the Boat fans, sorry for the delay on this one but I was fighting a cold the last week and really wasn't in the right state to write a review. So just a week ago Fresh off the Boat delivered another amazing episode featuring once again an annoyingly perfect performance by Constance Wu. So let's dig into the events of "How To Be An American".

In this episode, we witness Jessica taking her citizenship interview and it was a good one. The interview was conducted by Doug, played by Happy Ending star Zachary Knighton. Zachary was the perfect casting for this role, he was on point with every line and his slightly creepy look made the role that much more convincing. Doug was a weird dude and played off very well opposite Jessica and Louis making the interview so much more entertaining.
Throughout the episode, we found out in what type of predicaments Jessica found herself after her student visa was canceled. Jessica's retelling of past events was simple and true to her character and her All White People are the same policy was not only a great pun throughout the episode it also enabled the writers to use familiar faces in her retelling. The flashbacks to Jessica's job attempts were hilarious and written just right for her character, giving Constance even more space to shine.

I have to say I was a bit pissed at Jessica for how she treated Louis and how arrogant she was towards him, even in the moments when she confessed she married him for his green card. Louis is so infatuated by their meet-cute that her constant putting down was simply unacceptable. But once again Jessica pulled herself out of the gutter with a confession that moved the heart of most the viewers in front of the small screen. Even though Jessica fought as hard as she could to show herself in an indifferent light she couldn't step out of the spotlight in that moment. Her small act of vandalism was an act of true love cause just as Louis she fall in love with him at first sight. Constance Wu's performance was once again exceptional and award worthy. Every single line, every facial expression, every single gesture was on spot and I really can't understand the lack of award love for this talented young actress.

This week's side story involved the Huang boys and their attempt of being wild boys. The interaction between the boys was splendid and hilarious. Their attempt to highjack the car was bound to fail miserably but provided a bunch of laughs and strengthened the brotherly bond to a new level. The writers did an amazing job in exploiting each boy's unique character to add it to the story and creating a bunch of funny moments. Grandma Huang's wall of Leverage was another highlight memorable moment of this week's episode.

Week after week Fresh off the Boat delivers great laughs and character progression. Next week we'll be blessed with two Fresh off the Boat episodes one airing on Tuesday and the other in a special time slot Wednesdays 8/7 central. Meanwhile, feel free to to share your thoughts on last weeks outing in the comment section.
