First off, in light of the season 4 renewal, yay for Z Nation fans! It looks like with The Man and his superior there is plenty of story to be told for at least one more season, so it is good we will see that plot explored next year.
As for this week, it took a while to get to the events that just unfolded following Warren's, "we're gon' need some backup," more than a month ago. However, 'The Siege of Murphytown' finally came and went and to only mildly exciting results.
I'm still waiting for an episode to top last season's 'White Light' in terms of adrenaline pumping action. I expected 'The Siege of Murphytown' to be that episode, but it didn't quite live up to expectations. There was not a single moment that grabbed me, it felt very one-note due to the lack of high stakes and humour.
One positive, however, has been the handling of Warren. The crux of this week's episode and the season as a whole has been the evolution of Warren into this uncompromising soldier who is willing to sacrifice innocent lives for the greater good of the mission.
Seeing Warren kill some of these blends without hesitation was disturbing, but it felt like a natural progression for her character after what she had gone through these past three seasons. At least we still have Doc, and to a certain extent, Murphy to keep things light - the former of whom was sorely missed in this episode.
'The Siege of Murphytown' did a great job in shaking things up a bit as there are now three new members to Team Bite Mark. First off, is the return of Red. The actress delivered a couple cringeworthy lines in the premiere, but her character adds a different dynamic to the team. She certainly has strong chemistry with 10K and everything about her from her weapon to her style is just really cool and will fit well into this show. Still not too sure about 5K and just how much I can take of him as a character. It would have been nice if they just killed him offscreen and had Red return alone, but who knows, maybe he will grow on me.
We also saw Citizen Z join the team! And it looks like Kaya will take over the unnecessary broadcasting from the Arctic storyline. I'm not a big fan of Kaya being pregnant, in fact anything related to her character has been annoying, but hopefully she'll become more likeable the more we get to know her. Certainly, Citizen Z travelling with Team Bite Mark will add even more dynamic to the team and, of course, it'll be fun to see how he interacts with Addy.
The episode did a fine job in pushing the story forward at the end. It makes sense for the kidnapping of Lucy to be the catalyst for everyone coming together. Murphy's turn as the sort-of villain of the season was fun while it lasted, but now it is time for him, along with his old friends, to face an even tougher adversary.
It's been an uneven season, but I like where things are going. The Man is a compelling villain who has not yet been fleshed out enough, though hopefully next week's finale will steer the boat in the right direction.
7/10
