03:30 - The Goldbergs - Season 4 - Karate Kid Inspired Episode Coming

There have been breakfast clubs, dirty dancers, days off, and risky businesses… and now, bullies, crane kicks, and swept legs.

The Goldbergs, ABC’s smashing ‘80s sitcom, has set its cinephilic sights on 1984’s The Karate Kid as the fourth season’s annual homage episode, EW has learned exclusively.

Movies from the neon era have figured in as plot inspirations for plenty of episodes of the consistently delightful sitcom, but each season boasts at least one episode specifically derived from a sole film. Following up on this season’s Breakfast Club premiere, season 4 will continue the homages with a 2017 episode that goes full Ralph Macchio (and, like, half Pat Morita).

The episode finds Adam (Sean Giambrone) and Barry (Troy Gentile) cornered by a tough kid at school but given the opportunity to fight back in a school-sanctioned karate match. Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey), as she is wont to do, is compelled to intervene, effectively becoming the boys’ “Mr. Momyagi” as she tries to protect her schmoos.

The Karate Kid episode will air in late winter/early spring of 2017.

03:30 - Fresh Off The Boat - Season 3 - Heather Locklear to Guest

Fresh Off the Boat has a Lock on another Melrose Place alum.

Heather Locklear is set to guest-star on the ABC family comedy, EW has learned. The actress will play Sarah, the intimidating ex-wife of Marvin (Ray Wise) who faults Honey (Chelsey Crisp) for the collapse of their marriage. Sarah is not only a DJ at the Radisson but also works at the glove counter of a department store, which may explain the name of the episode: “The Gloves Are Off.”

Slated to air in February, the episode is directed by Fred Savage. The alum of The Wonder Years and The Grinder recently helmed episodes of Casual and Two Broke Girls this year, and his directing resume also includes such credits as Modern Family, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Happy Endings.

03:30 - Civil - Modern Day Civil War Drama Pilot Not Moving Forward at TNT

TNT has opted not to proceed with its pilot Civil. The political and social drama was a hot prospect when it was picked up to pilot in May, as its plot sounded ominously close to real-life current events. Written by A Simple Plan scribe Scott Smith and directed by Allen Coulter, Civil, which secured a solid cast led by Bradley Whitford, Courtney B. Vance, Toby Jones and Enrique Murciano, takes place in the wake of a hotly contested Presidential election, as America finds itself plunging uncontrollably into a modern day Civil War. The series weaves together the personal stories of citizens from all walks of life, whose actions – amplified in an age of instant media – add fuel to the conflict and affect the fate of the entire country.

TNT brass were high on the project for a series order, and backup scripts were ordered while the pilot was being filmed over the summer, just as the Presidential election campaign was growing more contentions by the day. There was an idea to preview the pilot in the fall, around the November vote, and then launch the series in January. Those potential plans were put on hold when the pilot was delivered in August. A decision was made not to rush the project to series. The network eventually passed on it. Some observers say it may have felt too close to home.

03:30 - MOVIES: Robin Hood: Origins - Ben Mendelsohn in Negotiations to Play the Sheriff of Nottingham

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” baddie Ben Mendelsohn is eyeing another villainous role.

The Emmy-winning actor is in negotiations to play the Sheriff of Nottingham in Lionsgate’s “Robin Hood: Origins.”

The movie stars Taron Egerton as the titular, iconic character; Jamie Foxx as Little John; and Eve Hewson as Maid Marian. “Fifty Shades of Grey” actor Jamie Dornan will portray Will Scarlett, Robin Hood’s half-brother.

Otto Bathurst is directing from Joby Harold’s script. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Basil Iwanyk, Tory Tunnell, and Joby Harold are producing.

The story will center on Robin Hood, a war-hardened crusader who joins a Moorish commander in an audacious revolt against the corrupt English monarchy.

03:30 - The Bastard - Family Comedy in Development at FOX

Fox has given a script commitment with penalty to The Bastard, a single-camera comedy written and executive produced by Rob Rosell and David Hornsby. 20th TV is the studio. This marks a reunion for Rosell and Hornsby, who co-created with Scott Marder the FX animated comedy series Unsupervised and served as executive producers on the network’s flagship comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

The Bastard follows Warren, a hardworking hotel janitor who has a freak accident at work and is told by his mother, who mistakenly thinks he’s on his death bed, that he’s the bastard son of the wealthy founder of the hotel chain. Warren seeks out his real father, hoping to connect, and eventually earns a place in the wealthy but dysfunctional family. But no matter how hard he tries, he will always be … the bastard.

03:30 - MOVIES: Jekyll - Ruben Fleischer to Direct Lionsgate Adaptation Starring Chris Evans

EXCLUSIVE: Ruben Fleischer has been set by Lionsgate to direct Chris Evans in Jekyll, the feature based on the 2007 BBC One series. Evans came attached in July, to play the lead role of Tom Jackman. This sets up a couple of potential competitive situations, one of them involving the rival project at Universal that is being built around Russell Crowe. The other: which movie will Fleischer next direct? After all, he’s in the middle of Sony’s effort to sequelize Zombieland, which has now become a cult classic that launched not only Fleischer but Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin, and gave a second wind to Woody Harrelson. As a result, all of those stars are more expensive, and Sony is working on the deals. The movie wasn’t a blockbuster — $102 million WW on a $23 million budget — but it is the kind of clever film that has aged favorably and the post apocalyptic world can be expanded.

Fleischer will work with the scribes, and some of the timing here depends on Evans’ duties as Captain America in the back to back sequels to The Avengers which Joe and Anthony Russo are directing. As for Universal, it too is developing a film based on the Robert Louis Stevenson public-domain novel about the doctor with the split personality. Crowe will appear first in The Mummy opposite Tom Cruise and presumably as a stand-alone in a later film.

Skam - Simon Fuller to Produce English Version of Norwegian Teen Drama
Thanks to Julio for the heads up.

Simon Fuller, who changed the landscape of television when he created American Idol, will produce an English-language version of Shame, a widely-acclaimed Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation series that has become one of Scandinavia’s most talked-about programs since its debut in 2015. The groundbreaking multi-platform teen drama will be produced by Fuller’s XIX Entertainment for the U.S. and Canada.

Known as Skam in Norway, the NRK series uses compelling narratives in real time with unknown actors and scripts that speak unflinchingly to a 16-year-old audience. The show has received massive attention and ratings among young and adult audiences throughout Scandinavia. In Norway, the weekly audience has grown this year from 24,000 to 1.262 million (Norway’s total population is 5 million), outperforming most TV and streaming primetime hits in the Scandinavian country.

“Shame is an important show,” says Fuller. “There is precious little content created primarily for a teen audience and Shame provides this with great honesty and integrity. This show packs a punch and is leading the way in exploring multi-platform storytelling. It has become an enormous hit in Norway and has the potential to become an influential show in America, where there is simply nothing like it. Scandinavia, and Norway in particular, is at the forefront of innovation and creativity in the shaping of the world’s digital and creative industries right now. I’m proud to be in partnership with NRK to take Shame to a worldwide audience.”

“By taking the rights for the U.S. and putting the power of Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment behind it, we feel certain that Shame’s integrity will be respected, and that the unique authenticity that is at the heart of our show will capture a very large audience,” says Ole Hedemann, head of formats for NRK. “Shame’s secret, the accurate portrayal of high school kids, gives the audience something to think about — and at the same time, something to love.”

The cast is focused on a group of 16-year-old characters, and storylines are meticulously researched to reflect real-life teen issues. Shame generates a shared reality for its viewing audience through the web where each episode is first published as it happens. Further chat, posts and social media uploads take place over the following days before the weekly TV show summarizes the storyline for the casual viewer.
