Sherlock - Season 4 Finale Hits the U.S. Big Screen Mid-January
9 Dec 2016
SherlockAmerican “Sherlock” fans will get the opportunity to see the dramatic conclusion of the newest season on the big screen this winter. The series four finale, titled “Sherlock: The Final Problem,” will hit U.S. movie theaters for two nights in January following its TV debut. BBC Worldwide North America and Fathom Events will present the episode on Monday, January 16 and Wednesday, January 18, at 7:00 p.m. local time.
The season finale will be shown in nearly 350 movie theaters across the United States. In addition to the shocks and surprises sure to thrill fans, audiences will be treated to 15 minutes of exclusive extras.
“We can’t think of a better way to start the new year off than experiencing the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson on the big screen,” said Soumya Sriraman, EVP, Franchise and Digital Enterprises, BBC Worldwide North America. “The bonus content will be an excellent treat for the show’s loyal fans.”
This isn’t the first foray into cinema for the celebrated TV drama. Last year’s holiday episode, “The Abominable Bride,” featured a limited theatrical release.
Fathom Events Vice President of Programming Kymberli Frueh said, “We are thrilled to bring this series back to the big screen to allow fans to meet up at the movies once again. ‘Sherlock’ fans are always dedicated and passionate, filling up movie theaters across the country for these exciting events.”
The acclaimed BBC/MASTERPIECE drama stars Emmy Award winners Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson. The show has become a global phenomenon, engaging audiences from Berlin to Tokyo. The series has won 12 BAFTA awards, 9 Emmys and a prestigious Peabody Award. It is one of only three British TV Shows that has appeared on the cover of “Entertainment Weekly.”
Fans have been waiting a long time for season four. Except for the Christmas episode last year, the show hasn't aired on TV since 2014. Each season usually takes two years to complete, as the three episodes a season are shot in the format of a 90-minute feature-length film. The cast has also grown more in-demand each year. (Benedict Cumberbatch is currently starring as the titular character in the high-grossing Marvel Studios film "Doctor Strange.")
“Sherlock” season four debuts Sunday, January 1 on PBS MASTERPIECE. The season will again feature three episodes (airing each Sunday until January 15). The series is written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis, based on the literary works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
