  • Last Week's Final Adjusted Ratings

  • Early HH Ratings from Marc Berman (programminginsider)
The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

    -Winners:
“Survivor” (CBS), “Empire” (Fox), “Star” (Fox), “Modern Family” (ABC), “Designated Survivor” (ABC)

    -Honorable Mention:
    “A Pentatonix Christmas Special” (NBC)

    -Losers (excluding repeats):
“The 12 Greatest Christmas Movies of All Time” (CW)

    Ratings Breakdown:
Fox, which inched past CBS by one-tenth of a household rating point in the overnights last night, should have a greater advantage in adults 18-49 (and all the key young adult demographics). “Star,” from “Empire” creator Lee Daniels, was positively sampled with a 4.8 rating/8 share in households in the 9 p.m. hour. Comparably, that finished second in the time period behind the second half of the fall finale of competing “Survivor” on CBS (5.2/ 8). It also held a solid 89 percent of the 8:30 p.m. portion of its “Empire” lead-in (5.4/ 9), which concluded for the fall in the 8 p.m. hour.

“Star” returns in the Wednesday 9 p.m. ET hour on January 4 in place of “Empire,” which will be taking a break until on March 22.

Overall, “Empire” averaged a 5.2/ 9 in the 8 p.m. hour, while “Survivor” on CBS concluded another successful fall edition with an approximate 5.3/ 9 in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that was just five percent below the year-ago fall season-ender (5.6/ 9 on 12/16/15).

The live “Survivor Reunion,” which started at approximately 10:05 p.m., finished second with a 3.9/ 7 in the household overnights. Tops in the 10 p.m. hour was the fall season-finale of ABC’s “Designated Survivor” at a 4.6/ 8. Foolishly, the next original episode of “Designated Survivor” will not air until March 8. ABC, like Fox, has not learned that a three-month absence is not necessarily good for the future of a series.

Earlier in the evening on ABC were the fall season-ending installments of sitcoms “The Goldbergs” (#4: 4.1/ 7), “Speechless” (#4: 3.5/ 6), “Modern Family” (#3: 4.7/ 8) and “black-ish” (#4: 3.7/ 6), which continues to rack up critical acclaim.

NBC featured holiday-themed “A Pentatonix Christmas Special” (#3: 4.7/ 8 from 8-9 p.m.) and “A Saturday Night Live Christmas Special” (4.0/ 7 from 9-11 p.m.), which both performed admirably despite the severity of the competition. And The CW closed the night with 8 p.m. special “The 12 Greatest Christmas Movies of All Time” (#5: 1.0/ 2) and a repeat of “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show” (#5: 0.8/ 1), which originally aired on CBS.
