Mithat is killed by Sita, who then nosedives from a bridge leaving her baby with Kami. Lukas testifies he saw everything that happened in the cabin to stop Philip from leaving.
Moments later from the last episode, a slow motion montage shows Lukas walking to the cabin. Shaky footage and a constant ringing remind us that what Lukas and Philip experienced in the pilot was their worst nightmare. Helen asks him to take her through everything he saw and heard. He looks around the room as she relives every painful second. He tells her he hid in the closet and after hitting him, he grabbed the gun and ran. It’s a good cover but there’s one missing link, he’s not the one who can identify the killer.
The familiar fostering tape plays as Helen drives, this time instructing her to put the pieces together if her child is not willing to open up. I love these voice overs and I love that the mystery is starting to wrap up as the season heads to a close.
Lukas FINALLY apologises to Philip and they hug it out. He tells Philip he can’t leave Tivoli and Philip jokingly asks if he’s stomach is hurting because he’s in love with him. This is perhaps the first cute moment they’ve shared that hasn’t made me want to punch Lukas.
Helen barges into Kane’s office with the gun and requests it’s processed for prints. Despite his best efforts, she will not let this go. He drives off to the bridge and throws the gun, the frying pan and what looks like Bella’s belongings in the lake.
Lukas also apologises to his father who silently looks at him and shakes his head. Lukas turns his head, like a dog about to be hit as his father smashes a glass behind him.
Philip reconciles with Gabe after lying to him about the Yellow Couch incident, he comforts him and tells him he used to do the same as a child. Meanwhile, Kane is asked to take a polygraph so that he can be relocated. He smiles and says he has nothing to hide.
Lukas thinks he recognises Mithai but Helen and Tony are not convinced. Helen insists that as long as they stay at the office there will be a case to solve. She asks one thing he noticed about Mithat. he replies his sad eyes and then rethinks his answer: his accent. If Lukas was with him in the cabin he would have recognised his accent.
Kami finds Helen to tell her Sita’s dead. They hug as she cries inconsolably. Look how far these two have come. They stay at the office and talk about being an agent. Kami tells her being an agent is the only thing that makes her happy and Helen smiles as she thinks about her past.
After staying up all night Helen realises Lukas had to use something to knock the killer out so she searches for the pan. Tony visits Kane to look through though the recorded evidence and Ryan smiles as he asks who their eyewitness is. Tony's like SYKE I ain't telling you, it's against the rules. Kane starts investigating again until he finds Lukas’s bike page. Lukas is in serious danger but if Kane kills him, Helen will confirm her suspicions that the real killer is alive.
He watches Philip as he rides Helen’s car and the foster mother and son take a polaroid together. She lets him know she would never let him leave and he thanks her for letting him stay in the upstairs bedroom. Something which Helen did not agree to, leading to a huge argument with Gabe.
Helen is furious he told Philip he could live with them indefinitely without asking her. It's a stupid thing to do because it's not something they can promise and since Helen is having doubts, the timing couldn't be worse
The killer makes his move while Lukas and Philip are cuddling at the barn. How great would it be if he caught them in the act? Gabe tells Helen the Larson's dog was killed in their garden and she takes her gun out and runs into the night.
The score throughout 1x7 is top notch and the ending song asks who is in the shadows. She chases after someone into the woods. She calls Ryan and asks him to give witness protection to Lukas even though he’s the one hunting him down.
Notes:
There was a lot more colour in this episode which is always welcome, balancing how dark the recent plotlines have been. I also found the pace of this episode really good while in 1x6 I noticed it felt off.
Answers:
In 1x7 we learn two huge things for two of the main characters:
1. Ryan Kane, who's interviewing for a new job, was in the military and toured in Afghanistan before he came back to the FBI.
2. Helen moved from Buffalo and resigned from the agency to start her own family. That's why she adopted Philip! She needed a new start after her case in Buffalo that apparently went horribly wrong. This is a great development and I'm dying to see what exactly happened in Helen's past.
Favourite scene:
I always say that any Kami and Helen scene is my favourite scene but this week's surpassed anything we've seen thus far. Kami and Helen share their shared experiences working as agents and Helen opens up about why she left. She tells Kami that she chose a family over her career now that Kami is faced with the same dilemma, having to raise Sita's baby. "No guy anywhere in the world is having this choice"
Favourite shot:
Ryan hides in the shadows while Helen is trying to hunt him down. Oh Helen if only you knew.
Favourite quote:
-You know no guy anywhere in the whole world right now is having this dilemma.
- Yeah, you think? They said we could have it all.
- Yeah, well, they lied.
Grade: 4/5
I think this might be my favourite episode so far. Lukas is working on his issues, Kami and Helen are best friends (and girlfriends), Kane is making a move and the stakes are really high. If only the dog hadn't died. That was upsetting. What did you all think? Two episodes left until the finale!
