Happy almost Holidays to all those who celebrate them! Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a sure fire way to get you feeling in the festive mood, especially with "Captain Latvia". While "The Overmining" may not have been the show's best outing, "Captain Latvia" more than made up for it. Apologies for the lack of reviews as I now have finished my exams. I can't wait to talk to you about these two episodes, briefly. Let's get to it!
The Overmining:
We can all agree that this episode might've been a bit underwhelming. But even when it's a lacklustre episode, this show still delivers the humour consistently. There's something to like in every episode, even the so-so ones, and I've always loved that about this show. The cold open was, once again, hilarious. Boyle made a joke about Diane Wiest - referring to Diane Wiest infection that he has. The episode never did get better than this, though. While I thoroughly enjoyed Gina basically admitting that she wants to kiss Amy, that whole plot was a bit tired. It didn't do much for Terry or Amy, and it just showed how much power Gina has over everyone. Although, no one wants to see Hitchcock naked. Which is probably true. Jake and Holt got to work together, though. And I loved that. But I just wish their plot had a bit more effort put into it. I did admire the fact that they tried to keep this season serialized. Bringing back CJ
was a good choice. Simply using him as a crutch to finally get back to the day shift was also a smart move. But the story just didn't wow me. The fact that anyone could find opening a door at the same time as the criminal and knocking him out as "good police work" is astounding. But as I said, I still liked the episode regardless. It could've been better, but it was still good.
Captain Latvia:
Now
this episode, on the other hand, was a complete package. It felt like a classic episode, if you will. Remember last year's "Yippie Kayak"? While Jake got to feel like John McClane, it was Boyle at the end of it who had the big moment of knocking out the bad guy. This year, it was Jake and Boyle in the A-plot once more, and Boyle took the lead on their project. He was determined to get his son the Captain Latvia doll, even if it meant risking harm. Jake didn't want to see him get hurt, and knew it was the thought that counted, so he knocked him out and tried to salvage what was left of the doll, but it was no use. But it ended even better - Nikolaj
loved the cop action figure and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy. In the B-plot,
Always Sunny fans could get a kick out of seeing Gail the Snail and Bill Ponderosa in the same episode. He played a drunk criminal who just so happens to sing really well while drunk. I really enjoyed this plot and all the characters had great lines. I think I most enjoyed that most of the squad was together for this plot, and even if they sounded pretty bad while carolling, they still united to try their best. And the ending scene was so sweet. This episode is one I will definitely be watching again and again. That cold open especially. Man, this show has THE best cold opens of all time.
