Van Helsing - Little Thing - Review + POLL

In 'Little Thing' the team find themselves out in the world and headed to the army base, while Mohammad plays catch up.

This episode did a wonderful job in building the camaraderie between the survivors. Ironically, it was the little things in 'Little Thing' that resonated the most, such as Susan and Sam celebrating after finding gasoline, which made me fall in love with Susan even more as she is so darn quirky. There was also the team, more like Susan and Sam again, having a laugh after John says to Flesh, "you're creepy," which was quite amusing.

The best moment of this episode though was when Sam started singing 'Big Rock Candy Mountain' as they all sat around drinking together. Vanessa resting her head on his shoulder showed how much of a glue-man he has become to the group.

For the first time this season, the survivors really felt like a family, easily making 'Little Things' the best episode so far.

Unfortunately, by episodes end this family is short one member after Vanessa kills John. Personally, i thought this was too soon. There was still a lot more to develop with this antagonistic character. Despite John being pretty much a jerk, there were hints of some redeeming qualities and it would have been nice to see them fleshed out more.

What was just as surprising was Vanessa's cold reaction to killing John. She did not even comfort her best friend who just had a broken bottle pressed against her neck and was crying. This was a bit of a jerk move, actually.

With one member down, another is introduced. This new dude seems like he will be fodder in episodes to come, though he did provide some comic relief with that "you mean like paintings and s#%&?"line.

Outside of the groups adventures, we also see some Mohammad as he travels to catch up with the group. The kid can definitely protect himself as we saw in this episode after he easily handled two vamps. We also see some drive by shooting as he guns down a vamp while riding on his bike. The badass of the week most definetly goes to Mohammad. Poor Mohammad though is headed towards the bells, having just missed the sign Sam left for him.

Overall, 'Little Thing' was a very important episode. With such a large ensemble, building camaraderie is crucial and this week that relationship between the team was really felt. The death of John was a bit of a buzzkill and could have been held off for an episode or two. Otherwise, this was, by far, the best episode of this slow burn of a show.

8/10
