The Mindy Project - "Concord" - Review

The most recent episode of “The Mindy Project” explored the quintessential dilemma faced by anyone in a relationship — what’s the most appropriate behavior for when your ex is getting married.

That’s right folks, we’ve reached the day of Danny and Sarah’s wedding. Of course, Mindy is not going to be in attendance, and she is fine with it. At work, everyone is excited about the upcoming nuptials. Morgan finally reminds them that due to Dr. L’s presence, they need to curb down their enthusiasm.

Even Ben is worried about Mindy, especially because he cannot stay with her that weekend. Once again, she reassures him that she’s okay. I get why most of them are worried, though. If you recall one of the previous wedding’s she attended of an ex in the pilot, let’s just say things got out of hand.

As she relaxes on her couch alone, she hears Danny’s voice. Ah, the way he calls her “Min.” I do miss him. This voice, she realizes, is coming from a photo of his stuck on her refrigerator. He’s asking her to ditch everything and come to the wedding to stop it. She tries to run away from “him” and throws away all his pictures but to no luck. The best way to stop his voice from ringing in her ears? Just start driving and singing Broadway songs. Before she knows it, she reaches Concord, Massachusetts to her parent’s house.

It’s always lovely to see Sonu in the flesh. Sakina Jaffrey is so great in this role. She and Rishi, Mindy’s younger brother, attempt to cheer her up. However, Sonu tells Mindy the next morning that she has a ton to do, including meet two of her friends, so she cannot stand around waiting on Mindy. As the sibling duo pass their time, with Mindy Snapchatting to her one follower, she receives two very important calls.

One from her mother’s friend whom Sonu said she’s meeting. This causes them to realize their mother is out with someone else. The second? Morgan calls from the wedding because he spoke with Dr. C, and the man is ready to bail on the wedding for Mindy. At first, she decides to drive down to the city and get her man. However, after Rishi coaxes her, they go to the restaurant their mother’s at and see her with a man. Turns out, he’s trying to help Sonu launch her music and acting career in return for some sexual favors, something she doesn’t catch on to.

Sonu gets really mad that her children ruined her chance to achieve success when for all the past years she’s put her dreams on hold for them. As Mindy is driving to the city, she answers a call from Ben who drops the “I think I love you” bomb on her. It’s like a light goes off in her head so she doesn’t go to stop the wedding.

Feeling terrible about her mom, Mindy even goes to speak with the producer only to be disgusted by him. After telling her mom the truth and breaking her heart, they discuss how she’s been hallucinating Danny. Her mom, while not surprised because her daughter has been known for ruining a wedding or two in the past, manages to tell her daughter just how proud she is of her.

As the family is enjoying some television, Danny calls Mindy. And what does she do? Ignore it, of course. If she sticks to this decision, we'll probably see more of #Bendy as they are called, which I kind of like. So far, Ben has been quite the dream boy.

I like that she didn’t just go back running to him after the way he treated her last season but I’m bummed because the two were really good for each other before then. A big treat in this episode was Rhea Perlman! We get to see a glimpse of Annette and her BFF Dot, who wastes no time hitting on Ben. I’m also happy to report that I didn’t miss Jody or Colette as much this episode. Morgan, Tamra, Beverly, and Jeremy, however, is a whole other issue.

On Nov. 15, “The Mindy Project” will air its 100th episode. It’s exciting! I’m curious to see if they’ll bring Messina back for it and in what capacity. He has been integral to the show from the beginning. Plus, let’s focus on all the character equally now, the ones who’ve made this show a lot of fun to watch.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from “Concord.”

Mindy: I’m going to order some Thai food, do my laundry, eat that pill I found on the floor.
Ben: No you’re not. You never do laundry.

Mindy (to Danny’s photo): Enjoy the trash can, you stupid photo.

Danny (as photo): Wow, there’s a lot of candy wrappers in here.

Mindy: There’s a demonic presence in my home. I’m going to need holy water, garlic, a Catholic priest. Wait, no, Danny loves those things.

Sonu: Sorry beta, I can’t spend my day waiting on you.
Mindy: But that’s your job!

Rishi: Woman, you could do a TED talk if your voice wasn’t so annoying.

Ben: Hey, are you in Boston? All the people in the background of your Instagram’s are white.
