Beverly Goldberg to Appear
Thanks to Julio for the heads up.

“I’m leaving here today to hand it in tomorrow to ABC,” Goldberg said about the pilot, “Right now, Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) is scripted to be in the pilot. So there’s a lot of crossover with the Goldbergs show.”

“It’s set a decade later, and Adam (Sean Giambrone) will have graduated,” added Goldberg. “The side characters have become really strong, and I don’t want to rob my show of all the great characters, so we’re slowly unveiling new characters.” The pilot is inspired by Goldberg’s wife — whose parents are teachers — and Goldbergs EP Marc Firek, who is also a writer on the spinoff; his sister and father are teachers.

Still no title for the spinoff — “I’m terrible with titles,” says Goldberg — but it will have the same format, with a voice-over a la The Goldbergs. But this time it’s the voice of a teacher. The role hasn’t been casted yet.

“The show is told from the point of the view of the teachers, and one of the teachers has kids in the school,” added the creator.

ABC is looking to add a second dose of Adam F. Goldberg's brand of nostalgia.

The network is teaming with The Goldbergs creator to develop an untitled 1990s-set spinoff of the fourth-season 1980-something comedy, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

From The Goldbergs producer Sony Pictures Television — where Goldberg is under an overall deal — the comedy landed at ABC with a script commitment and significant penalty attached. The spinoff is set in the 1990s and stars Bryan Callen. It centers on two high school teachers who become unlikely father figures to the school secretary's three misfit kids. It is rumored to take place in Philadelphia, where The Goldbergs is set. Callen, who recurs as The Goldbergs' no-nonsense high school gym teacher/coach Rick Mellor, is attached to star.

The Goldbergs exec producer Marc Firek and Goldberg are penning the script for the single-camera comedy. Happy Madison's Doug Robinson and Seth Gordon — who also exec produce ABC's The Goldbergs — are also attached to exec produce the spinoff.

The spinoff comes as The Goldbergs has turned into a solid reliable performer as part of ABC's comedy brand. The "1980-something" semi-autobiographical comedy has developed into a self-starter in its fourth season where it launches the network's critically praised Wednesday family comedy block. Season four is averaging a 2.7 among adults 18-49 with seven days of DVR and 8.3 million total viewers. The series has already been sold in syndication to Tribune stations across the country, with Hulu scoring the series' VOD window.
