This week’s episode of Supergirl blew me away as much as if I had been hit by one of the those Alien Canon’s. While I enjoyed Season 1, Season 2 just keeps on delivering great new storylines week after week. The Kara and Mon – El /Mike scenes were hilarious giving us the lighter side we all love while the implications regarding Cadmus made for a sinister opponent. We also get to see more of Lena Luthor who is fast becoming a hit with the fans but the main highlight is a storyline that viewers have been hoping for.
The rumors have been circling about which of the CW Universe characters would be gay when it was announced a major character would come out this fall season on one of the shows. As soon as Supergirl started for some viewers Alex seemed the likely candidate. Her backstory hadn’t been explored beyond being Kara’s protective sister and an Agent at the DEO,some argued about her brief flirtation with Max but ultimately that was to gain information. This week it was clear Alex had struggled for some time and has come to the realization why her dating life wasn’t right. For anyone who has struggled with their sexuality they instantly related to the character and what she was going through. The writing and acting were superb, Chyler Leigh delivered each sentence with an uncertainty we hadn't witnessed in Alex before. Her looks said it all while talking with Kara about choosing your own way . I for one applauded at the end of the episode and can’t wait for an uninterrupted sister talk next week.
So, let’s take a closer look at Crossfire
Previously on Supergirl Kara decided to take Mon-El under her wing. This means a new identity, a job and all important glasses in case he feels the need to be a Superhero in the future.
Kara has gotten Mon-El now known as Mike an internship at Cat -co, basically, so she can keep an eye on him. Though it might have been an idea to teach him how to answer a phone. (Least it wasn’t in a fish tank).
Alex is shooting pool with Maggie who seems a bit down turns out her girlfriend has dumped her; she soon leaves to drown her sorrows.
In the city, a car almost runs Kara and James off the pavement, the hooded figures disappear into a bank and Kara almost feels sorry for them as its right in front of her, her alter ego Supergirl comes to stop them but when one of the robbers hits her with a type of laser cannon she has a hard time defeating them. James steps into the fight but gets kicked to the curb and loses his beloved camera. Supergirl gets hit more than once and the robbers get away.
At the DEO the gun is identified as Alien technology but it's unknown how the robbers got hold of it until CADMUS releases a video warning of the danger of Aliens and their weapons. No surprise they would be involved.
Kara is defending Aliens once again at work, I notice no Snapper this week, will people be fearful of the new Alien Amnesty act.
James notices his assistant, Miss Taschmacher is doing a lot of work, well it's Mike’s work. Kara goes to tell him off saying he can’t do that and shuts down his response about on Daxam and women wanting to please him.
Lena Luthor appears looking for Kara and wants to invite her to her fundraiser for the children’s hospital (Supergirl went through its windows earlier during the fight with the robbers). Lena states not many want to befriend a Luthor and Kara is her only friend in the city. Mike wants to come; I am sure we can recall Kara saying Daxamites loved to party. Of course, Kara says no but Lena invites him along.
At the DEO Winn can't help but notice Alex is distracted. Alex tells him she is worried about Maggie as she as got dumped but Winn advises her not to get involved in relationships. He got Involved with Kara’s because he liked her but say’s Alex doesn’t like Maggie ..Winn I think she does . He gets a signal of more weapons with Alien tech being used and once again Kara tries to stop them but they get away when she has to save a cop car and occupant from flying off into space after a gravity cannon blast.
Alex arrives at the crime scene to see a still unhappy Maggie Sawyer; she offers to take her out but Maggie soon misreads and assumes Alex’s is asking her out to which she says no offense but she isn’t gay. Maggie apologizes but then states a lot of people say they aren’t when in fact they are. Alex looks nervous and makes an excuse to leave.
At Cat -Co, Mon- El/Mike is missing and so is Miss Taschmacher, Kara instantly regrets her super hearing and locates them both in a compromising position, you think after finding Winn like that she would at least knock. Mon – El/Mike seems to have seen a few episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and thinks he has done nothing wrong Kara tells him it’s her way or the highway.
James goes to see Winn at the DEO and gets information regarding the robber’s however it looks to be leading him on a dangerous road. Winn knows what he has done and tells him we are the guys who give the information but James feels he should be doing more even though he got hurt.
Kara’s mood hasn’t improved when she arrives at her apartment only to see her sister eating a donut outside( One thing that has been missing a sister scene ). Alex does a reversal knowing Kara is in a mood and Kara tells her about Mon- El /Mike. Alex explains she tried to make Kara like her but soon she knew Kara needed to find her own path and music, though I must agree about Nsync, I think Alex’s punk rock phase comment was a nod to Chyler leigh appearing in a Marilyn Manson video. (The song was his version of tainted love which has always been a gay anthem) When Alex says people need to choose their own path, discovering new things I think she is referring to herself as well. We also know no one rocks arglye like Kara… Kara apologizes to Alex knowing she had come over to talk but they get interrupted by Lena, who is surprised to see Alex there. She recognizes her from saving her life and seems to like the fact Kara and Alex are sisters. She needs to call in the favor Kara owes her and asks her to get a message to Supergirl that she wants to see her.
We have learned that Cadmus doctor had supplied the robbers with the weapons so when they call for help as they are going to crash Lena Luthor’s fundraiser, Cadmus warns them about going against the Luthor’s stating they are on their own.
Supergirl visits Lena and surprises her when she agrees to work with her and look after the party as she is sure the robbers will target it. Lena tells her, she will see her there with Kara. ‘Oh, Crap is right Supergirl you have dug yourself a bit of a hole’.
At the party, I was surprised Kara never asked for J’onn’s help but some quick work changing and a drunken diversion from Winn and it seems ok. Now she can focus on the food, poor Kara gets caught with her mouth full by Mon-El who offers her a dance. While Kara is still mad she knows, she needs to back off.
The party is soon crashed by the robbers and their Alien guns, While Supergirl does her best to dodge and take them down. Winn finds Lena Luthor under the table with a device that could destroy the weapons. With Winn’s help, it works and nice to see Lena is not only smart in business but science as well.
Maggie has the robbers in custody and they want to deal in exchange for the identity of who gave them the weapons but Doctor Cadmus kills them before they get the chance.
Winn knows James won’t give up wanting to play hero so offers to help him only if he waits until he gets him a suit ready. I see the birth of another hero but will need more convincing than what I have witnessed so far. Supergirl doesn’t need a team and with Mon-El stepping up at the party do we need another one.
At the DEO Kara tells Mon-El he must decide on his own Job and he is fired from Cat - Co ..he just started figuring out the phones !! I do think he might get into a bit of trouble but it will be entertaining.
Alex seeks out Maggie once again checking she is ok, she stumbles a bit over her words but comes to express that Maggie was right about what she said. All her life she has struggled to be perfect but the one area she failed in was dating. She now realizes it wasn’t the right sort of dates she was on.
Supergirl goes to talk to Lena knowing she helped her stop the Robbers, who would believe a Luthor and a Super working together. They get interrupted as Lena has a guest, we know her as Doctor Cadmus, Lena knows her as Mother.
Next week from Promo and synopsis we know Alex comes to a decision. Kara loses her powers and a new hero appears
So what are your thoughts about this weeks episode?
Will Maggie and Alex go on a date ?
Lena Luthor in league with her Mother or a good Luthor ?
