And the murder is out of the bag and opened a jar full of mixed emotions. "Chase" finally concluded Sarah Keating's murder case and ended with another mystery rising from a damn fine pool. The episode written by Sharon Lee Watson and directed by Chad Lowe was nicely paced and did build up nicely towards the murder reveal. Still, the reveal of Sarah's murder fell flat and some moves the writers made are quite responsible for it.
So let's get right to it. Sarah's murder was none other than her brother, Alan! Not only was it revealed that he is a murder and gambler, the writers added rapist and dad to the list of his felonies. Alan was a good choice, he was shady, defensive and was present in the story but not so much into our face. The whole build up towards the murder reveal was well handled, Bradley and Ella did an amazing job discovering small plot points and connecting the dots. Everything was fine until in the middle of the episode when they went all O.J. on us. I mean after all the things Bradley did to protect Jake and his image it just seemed silly to see him and Ella run away with Jake's ankle bracelet so he could talk to Brian. I get that it was more impactful to see Jake talk to Brian and his reactions to all the reveals that followed but logic went missing during those moments.
Brian, played by The Secret Circle's Adam Harrington, was the adoptive father of Sarah and Alan's child Zoe. A couple of weeks before her death Sarah paid Brian 100k so he could give Zoe the life she deserves. It was a nice way to get to Alan and but the way, they've confronted Alan was underwhelming and a quite disappointing. I'm not sure why the writers chose to make Alan confess in a closed room with only Max and Julia present. Why didn't they exploit the news outlet? Why didn't they go for something bigger? The show is at its best when it exploits and digs into news related stories and they should've tried to involve Alan's reveal into it. It was a very bland moment in the grand scheme but the writers did come through after revealing that Oscar wasn't that innocent.
The scene between Oscar and Jake was powerful and well executed by both actors. Kevin played it so smooth and deviously convincing that he washed out the bad taste left by the Alan reveal. Not to mention the cherry on top, when it was revealed that Oscar was arrested for cocaine possession. Nice move by the Gregorian brothers.
The cat and mouse game played by Julia and DA Max Gilford was really well another highlight this week. The way the writers played with their personal and business relationship was truly enjoyable and hopefully, the writers will give them some horizontal scenes for all of us to enjoy in the upcoming weeks.
Another very positive part of this episode and show overall is the friendship between Jake and Julia. I would love to see them interact bts, cause I fell like their moments aren't acted at all. Piper and Daniel are on point in all their scenes and it is such a strong foundation for the show.
The episode ended with Dana Hartman (Melina Kanakaredes), an old friend of Julia calling her and asking for help while a dead body was floating in the pool next to her. It's your turn now!
