ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What came with the decision to kill off Wes?

PETE NOWALK: I have to take all the responsibility for it. It was a horrible decision to have to make, because everyone really loves their job here, and I love them all doing their job. When it comes down to why I made the decision is because he is the heart of the show, and really I wanted to do something that felt impactful, and it impacts every character. That’s why it killed me to make the decision, but also why I made it, is because it really spins out everyone, and I really wanted something to change the DNA of the show.

It wasn’t easy to make. I switched my mind a million times, and I really just didn’t make a decision, and I was like, “I’ll make it when I have to,” and “I’ll make it when I have to,” and then eventually it was episode 7, and I had to make a decision. It was the least fun aspect of this job that I’ve had so far. I’ve had to make hard decisions, but this one… we’re just a happy family really, and I love Wes. I love how Alfie portrays Wes. I’m really terrified actually what the show would look like without him, but I think Shonda [Rhimes] taught me something: It’s like, “Go toward the terror.” It was a hard decision, but it’s just going to be visceral for all the characters, and I think that’s what I was looking for.

The second half of the season will include flashbacks with Wes, correct?

Yes. So, we’re going to see Wes for sure, alive, in the rest of the season sporadically. Obviously the big mystery is who killed him? What happened to Wes? We will be flashing back to what happened to him as well as — I don’t want to give away anything, but we’re going to see him in flashbacks in a way that I hope feels very cathartic.

But moving forward, he likely would not be a series regular next season?

I haven’t decided. Betsy [Beers] is always like, “You don’t know in your show. It’s crazy with your timeline.” And that’s the truth. I don’t know. Who knows if we’ll have a next season? I don’t really even think about it beyond this season.

TVLINE | Presumably the second half of the season will delve into what happened in Annalise’s house — the explosion, the fire, Wes’ death, Laurel’s experience in the basement.

It’s a few hours of time, and we will be seeing those hours throughout the remaining episodes. In the first episode back, we’ll see what happened to Wes after he left the police station. We won’t get all the answers, but slowly, we’ll be pulling back the curtain. We’d been doing flash-forwards, and now we’ll be doing flashbacks. And by the end of the season, if not earlier, we’ll find out what actually happened to him and who killed him.

TVLINE | We know Annalise is in jail for murder and arson — and on the word of an informant. If Wes is dead — we thought he was talking to detectives in the same timeline, but now we know it was a few hours prior — does that mean someone else is the informant? Or were the detectives somehow thinking Wes was alive and about to turn on Annalise? I’m not sure I’ve got that entirely nailed down.

You are very savvy, mister! [Laughs] As you said, they said they had an anonymous source, but Wes never signed the agreement — so does that mean there’s someone else? That’s a big question in our first episode back, and we’ll get an answer to that that is really shocking.

When did you find out that you would be killed off?

Pete [Nowalk] told me around the seventh episode, so about a month and a half ago. I got a call from his assistant being like, “Hey can you come and talk to Pete?” And I was like, “This is it.” We were all in this state of uncertainty and nervous excitement. We were all anxious to find out. He told me and I went back and told everyone else — I told Pete that I’ve got to tell everyone else and he was like, “Of course you do.” We had time to let the shock set in.

I think most fans are guessing that Wes is the father to Laurel’s baby. What can you say about that?

I can say that it will become apparent in the first episode back. Beyond that, I wouldn’t want to ruin that for anyone. But his relationship with Laurel is very important — it’s developed over the course of the three seasons — she’s always been there for him when he had a problem and had to deal with it, she’s the one helping him through it and supporting it.
