Hello, dear Fresh off the Boat fans! Sorry for the delay but I promise I'll do better next in the upcoming weeks. So let's not waste time and dig right into the story starting with Citizen Jessica.
-Citizen Jessica-
After three really stellar and strong outings, "Citizen Jessica" was tidbit underwhelming. Maybe my expectations were too high but the story surrounding Jessica fell flat and I think for the first time over the course of the show I didn't enjoy Constance Wu or the story they were telling about her character.
Constance Wu is an absolute delight and she and the writers deserve so much recognition for the role of Jessica Huang. But this time around I didn't feel their choice of storytelling or Constance's performance. Jessica going after immigrants felt somehow out of place, even though considering that money is the most important thing to her after her family. The story had a poor build-up as Jessica doesn't seem that petty to call immigrations on her workers. She would do a bunch of stuff still immigration seemed like crossing a line she wouldn't cross no matter what she was crusading for.
And then came the plothole also known as Jessica not renewing her green card. We all know Jessica way too well to trip into this one. I mean seriously, in what parallel universe could this happen to our Jessica Huang?
But Jessica still managed to lure out some smiles of my face by hazing Louis around, cause Randal Park looked terrified at the prospect of what his bride could do.
On the other hand, there were some very enjoyable moments within this episode. Eddie and his gang discussing Tupac's death for example. I've already praised the gang and their interactions in previous outings and this week they delivered once more. The kids are more grown up and can deliver the acting required to make their scenes funny and memorable. The fight in the cafeteria was entertaining, with some smooth lines and Dash Williams once again stealing the show. Dash's Brian is such a sweet weirdo and his attempts to joke about his friend's mothers are always a winner.

-No Thanks-Giving-
This year ABC hits all the right notes with their Holiday-themed episodes and all the issues I had with "Citizen Jessica" vanished in this Thanksgiving-themed episode.
The fifth season 3 episode had a solid story and showed Jessica in her best light, the pushy overbearing mother light. Eddie's decision to slack through eighth grade started a rollercoaster I certainly didn't expect. Everything started with a hilarious scene where Jessica canceled Thanksgiving for the Huangs and decided to open the restaurant to make more profit. This followed by the shocking reveal that Eddie doesn't want to do any more homework and just slack through life till the day Louis' dies and he takes over the Ranch made Jessica spiral out of control and start a mini war with Eddie.
Eddie's lay back attitude slightly hit Jessica bit by bit. But she proved to be very resilient and a little bit loco as she said. She forced Eddie to try again by promising to take the restaurant down just cause she needs him to try. And the hell he did try, the rapper family tree was authentic and a perfect choice for Eddie.
And while Jessica was occupied by giving Eddie perspective and dreams, she didn't miss the opportunity to crush Louis' self-esteem. The look on his face when Jessica said neither of her sons was "bad" enough to run the ranch was hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. But then again, Jessica's magic happened.
Ohh Louis, of course, I don't think this place is good enough for them. But not cause I look down on Cattlemen's it is just because I have ridiculously high hopes for our boys.
Still, the episode wasn't all about Eddie and Jessica, Emery and Evan got some moments to shine as they entered tryouts to prove they are worthy to inherit Cattlemen's. The two boys worked really well with Mitch and Nancy and provided some very funny moments.
Grandma Huang's one-liners while watching the Thanksgiving parade were amazing and hilarious we certainly need more of her.
