Empire is back after the World Series haitus. It's been over a month since the fourth episode, and this fifth episode of the third season is called One Before Another.
Season 3 is shaping up: One Before Another doesn't shine, but it is an interesting and entertaining hour. Hakeem is always the most controversial character in the show: the writers don't know how to handle the younger Lyon brother. In the previous episode, he was showing some signs of maturity, in this one he just makes so many missteps. I didn't like him at all, and I hated how he attacked his brothers. I am still enjoying his relationship with Bella and I hope he will save her from Lucious' claws.
After hooking up with Nessa, Andre was attacked by Shyne. The latter was later placated by Anika who convinced him into working with Lucious. In the end, we find out that he wants to team up with Tariq and Freda in order to take Lucious down.
As for Cookie, she helps Andre and Lucious and she is still in a some kind of flirt with Angelo. I am not sold on these two, but we'll see. Jamal is working with Derek, without letting personal feelings come in the way. Rhonda didn't appear, and finally Andre seems a bit more psychologically steady.
One Before Another wasn't an amazing episode, but it wasn't that bad at all. This new season is still better than the second, but I am not sure if the writers have interesting twists in store.
