'We Fight Death on Thick Lone Waters' was a pretty standard case of the week episode, heightened by refreshing and spirited storytelling.
Starting the episode off in media res helped add a certain mystery to the proceedings. The slow reveals as to what really happened to Jane and Kurt, and why, helped make this episode thoroughly engaging from beginning to end despite it being a one note, stop the terrorist kind of hour.
What has made Blindspot so special on top of having one of the most badass fight choreography on network television, is the humour sprinkled through each episode. The show is not afraid to have fun and 'We Fight Death on Thick Lone Waters' was a perfect example.
In a genius move on the part of the writers, a large chunk of the story is told through the eyes of the unreliable Doyle, who gives this extravagant lie about how he fought off armed guards while Jane and Kurt stood helplessly by. It was so fresh to see Jaime Alexander and Sullivan Stapleton completely acting out of their characters for these scenes. Just too funny.
Another strong guest star in this episode was Aaron Abrams as the jerky, by the book, Matthew Weitz. Nothing too special of his performance, though his addition as an antagonistic ally worked well for the story of the episode. It looks like Naz is treading in deep waters for disobeying his orders, which led to a heart warming scene between her and Patterson as she confided in the tech gal all that she knows about Sandstorm.
Speaking of Naz, the badass of the week has to go to her as she fought off one of the henchman. He ultimately overpowered her, but not without her bashing his head on a tree and getting some hard-hitting kicks and jabs in. It would have been nice to see her get the upper hand for once, but being realistic about it, Naz is not Jane. It was still nevertheless a thrilling sequence. Ignoring her unnecessary relationship with Weller, Naz has added some strong character moments and minimal badassery too over the course of this young season, and she has been a great addition to the cast.
It looks like next week will be an explosive mid-season finale with "Phase 2" beginning, as Roman reveals to Jane in a tensely acted closing scene. As is the procedure, a lighthearted episode must precede it, and 'We Fight Death on Thick Lone Waters' was one of the more stronger lighter episodes in this series due to its spirited storytelling. I really do hope we see more of Doyle and his exaggerated stories in future episodes.
