Younger - A Night at the Opera - Review

When you are a huge fan of a show it’s sometimes hard to dislike an episode. In the past three seasons of Younger I have yet to dislike one. Well I guess this week's episode broke the mould. I’m not going to say it was the worst episode ever! It wasn’t. In fact there were several aspects of it that I quite enjoyed. But if I’m being honest about it, it was a little bit of a let down.

Since some of you might feel that I’m being a little harsh about this episode I’m going to get right to what bothered me about it. ‘The stoopid girls’! Yes, I know how the world works these days with social media and how there are many YouTube stars out there getting crazy deals. That’s all fine and dandy but I do not feel it was necessary to show ‘the stoopid girls’ as much as they were. The initial video of them from the beginning was more than enough for me to roll my eyes and I hoped that the writers would move along with the story. In a show that doesn’t have much air time it really didn’t need to waste any time showing us more of this youtube star's silly antics. When it comes down to it maybe my problem is the fact that I love this show and it has such a short season that it disappoints me that any of that precious time is wasted in such a way.

Now that I’ve articulated my disappointment I would like to point out some great moments of this episode. It was great to see more of Diana! I loved that sideline story in her apartment and how Kelsey and Liza were noticing how she seemed different at the office. I hope in the future there is more of that. Along with that, there was an interesting scene when Liza stopped Bryce at the elevators and he confessed to her that he was planning on cutting staff, especially in the older generation department. With everyone thinking Liza is 26 years old, I assume that she would be safe from the cutbacks. But what will happen if anyone were to find out? It’s going to be interesting to see how this news will affect everyone around the office. Will Diana really be on the chopping block?

The last couple of minutes of this episode was, in my opinion, the best part. Josh, Liza, Charles, and his date at the opera. It’s moments like that when it’s clear Josh isn’t on the same playing field as Liza. He seemed so out of place at such an event but when you watched Charles, he was in his element. For the most part it seems like Liza is enjoying her free and easy relationship with Josh. As the show explores more of her dynamics between her, Josh and Charles it’s easier to see how different they are. I just loved all of the opera scenes but I really enjoyed the final looks between Liza and Charles. There’s a lot of build up here and I’m feeling like the writers are enjoying torturing us. What do you think about this episode? Was I being too hard on it? Or do you agree with some of my thoughts?

Favourite scenes:

Diana breaking the pipe in the new apartment.
Charles and Liza moments at the Opera.

Favourite lines:
Kelsey: “She’s smiling! You can actually see teeth!”
Josh: “Do they all go to the same plastic surgeon? They all look alike!”
